LOGINChapter 3
REIGNS The roof leaked again that night. I woke up at five in the morning because water was dripping on my foot. I moved the bucket, lay back down, and stared at the brown stain on the ceiling. It was bigger than last week. Everything in this flat was getting bigger except the money. I didn't go back to sleep. I got up, washed my face with cold water because the heater had been broken since March, and put on my uniform. It still had the stain on the sleeve from yesterday. I didn't have time to wash it. Before I left, I looked at the picture on the wall by the door. It was my mother and me at the beach when I was seven. She was laughing with her head thrown back. I was holding an ice cream bigger than my face. "I'll see you after work, Mama," I told the picture. Then I locked the door and ran for the bus. --- For one year, my mother had been in room 12 at St. Catherine's Hospital. It was a private room with a window that looked out on a mango tree. She liked to watch the birds in it. She named them. She said the fat one looked like my old headmaster. I never asked how the bills were paid. That was a lie I told myself. I knew. I just never said it out loud. It was him. My father. Every month, the money came from somewhere I couldn't see, and every month my mother got her medicine, her clean sheets, and her window with the birds. I hated it. I hated taking anything from him. He visited us four times a year, in secret, like we were something to be ashamed of. He brought my birthday gift two weeks late every year. He never once stayed for dinner. But my mother's kidneys were failing, and pride doesn't pay for dialysis. So I took his money, and I hated myself a little bit every month. --- The hospital called at eight in the morning. I was wiping tables at the restaurant. "Miss Reign? This is the billing office at St. Catherine's." I stopped wiping. "Is my mother okay?" "Your mother is stable. But I'm calling about her account." The woman's voice was polite and flat, the voice of someone who made calls like this every day. "The payments for her care were cancelled last night." "Cancelled?" "Yes. By the account holder's family." I sat down on the nearest chair. "No. No, there has to be a mistake." "I'm sorry, Miss Reign. Unless a new payment is arranged, your mother will be moved from her private room to the general ward today. And her dialysis sessions will be cut from three a week to one, until the balance is cleared." "One? She can't live on one." "I'm very sorry." "How much? How much is the balance?" She told me. I didn't say anything. I couldn't. It was more than I made in two years. "Miss Reign? Are you still there?" I hung up. My hands were shaking. I looked down at them like they belonged to someone else. The account holder's family. There was only one person in that family who hated me enough to do this. And she didn't even wait one full day. --- "Reign." I looked up. My manager, Mr. Okoro, was standing over me with his arms folded. "Sorry, sir. I'm getting up." "Don't bother." He held out an envelope. "This is your pay for this week. You can go." I stared at the envelope. "Go where?" "Home. You're finished here." "Finished? Sir, I've worked here for three years. I've never been late. What did I do?" He wouldn't look at me. He looked at the window, at the floor, at anything but my face. "It's not about what you did," he said quietly. "Please. Just go. I have a family." That was when I understood. She didn't just take my mother's room. She was taking everything. I took the envelope. I took off my apron and folded it and put it on the table. My hands were still shaking, but I folded it neatly, because I refused to let anybody see me fall apart in that place. I was on the bus when my phone buzzed. The cracked screen made the words hard to read. I had to tilt it. It was from my landlord. Building sold to new owner. All tenants must leave in two weeks. Sorry. I read it once. I put the phone in my lap. I looked out the window at the city going past, the traffic, the hawkers, the people who had no idea that my whole life had just been taken apart in one morning. I didn't cry. I was too angry to cry. --- When I got to the hospital, my mother was already in the general ward. It was a long room with thirty beds and one fan that barely worked. The air smelled like sweat and medicine. A baby was crying somewhere. A man in the bed next to my mother was coughing like his chest would break open. My mother was sitting up against a thin pillow. Her face was grey. When she saw me, she smiled anyway. "There's my girl." "Mama." I sat on the edge of the bed and took her hand. It was so thin. "I'm sorry. I'm going to fix this. I promise I'm going to fix it." "Shh. It's all right." She squeezed my fingers. "It's not so bad here. Look, I have friends now." She nodded at the coughing man. "That's Mr. Bassey. He tells terrible jokes." "Mama, they cut your dialysis." Her smile faded a little. "I know." "Do you know who did it?" She was quiet for a long time. Then she said, very softly, "I can guess."Chapter 10REIGNSWhen I got up to my flat, there was a small box sitting on the floor outside my door.It was plain brown cardboard. No name. No note. No stamp.I looked up and down the dark hallway. Nobody.I picked it up and opened it.Inside, on a piece of folded cloth, was my mother's gold chain. The one I sold. The one my father gave her the year I was born. It was the same chain, with the same small scratch on the clasp.I stood in the hallway holding it and didn't understand. I turned the box over. I checked the cloth. There was nothing. Nobody knew I had sold it. Nobody except the man at the pawn shop. And whoever had followed me there.I didn't sleep. I sat on the mattress with the chain in my hand and my phone in the other, and I scrolled the news because I couldn't stop myself. Then I saw the headline, and my whole body went cold.ASHFORD HEIRESS ANNOUNCES BROTHER'S RETURNThere was a picture of Odalys outside the Ashford office, calm and perfect in grey. Under it, a state
Chapter 9REIGNSI woke up to my phone buzzing. It didn't stop. It buzzed and buzzed against the floor beside my mattress until it slid off the edge. I picked it up and squinted at the cracked screen. Forty-three notifications, from people I hadn't spoken to in years. Old school friends, a girl from the restaurant, a cousin of a neighbor.Have you seen this??Reign is this you???OMG girl what happenedI opened the first link.It was me.It was me on the top floor of Vance Tower, in the green dress, with Odalys dragging me by the hair. Someone had filmed it from behind a desk. The video was shaky, but you could see everything. My face. The price tag in Odalys's hand. The slap. The caption said, in big white letters:MISTRESS'S DAUGHTER TRIES TO STEAL SISTER'S BILLIONAIRE 💀It had two million views. It had been up for nine hours.I watched the whole thing with my heart in my throat. I waited for the end. For the part where she pushed me. For the part where I hung over forty floors of
Chapter 8ODALYSReign's face changed. For two days, I had watched her stay calm. At the funeral, at the will reading, even in that dirty hospital ward, she had held her face still. It had driven me mad.Now it cracked."You want to talk about blood?" she said. Her voice was low and shaking. "Fine. Let's talk about blood. Do you want to know what's in the second drawer of his desk, Odalys?"I went cold."My baby pictures," she said. "All of them. From the day I was born. My first steps. My first day of school. He kept them in his desk and looked at them every night. My mother told me. He told her.""Shut up.""Did he keep yours? Did he ever keep yours?" She stepped closer. "He never loved you. He paid for you. You were the daughter he had to have. I was the one he wanted."I slapped her.It was so hard that her head snapped to the side. The sound echoed across the whole floor. When she turned back, her bottom lip was split, and a thin line of blood ran down her chin. She stared at me.
Chapter 7ODALYS I came to Vance Tower to sign my engagement papers. That was all. It was a simple meeting. Mr. Adeyemi had drawn up the agreement, and Cassian's lawyers had checked it. All I had to do was walk in, sign my name, shake his hand, and leave. I had planned it down to the minute. Twenty minutes in his office, then lunch, then home.I didn't want to marry Cassian Vance. I didn't want to marry anyone. But I wanted to lose my father's company even less. So I put on my white dress, I did my hair, and I told myself it was just business. Just one more paper to sign. The assistant looked scared when I stepped out of the lift."Miss Ashford. You're early.""I'm on time. Is he free?""He, um…" The man looked at the door, then back at me. "He has someone with him.""Who?"He didn't answer. That was when I knew something was wrong.I walked past him to the office door. It wasn't fully closed. And through the gap, I heard a voice I would know anywhere."Marry me instead of her."I st
Chapter 6REIGNS"No, wait," I said. "Mama, you don't have to—""Take it." She put it in my hand and closed my fingers around it. "It's just metal, Reign. It was never him. He was never really in it.""I'll get it back. I promise. I'll buy it back.""I know you will." She touched my face. "Whatever you're doing, be careful. That family eats people."I kissed her forehead and left before she could see my face. The pawn shop gave me less than it was worth. Of course they did. The man looked at me, looked at the chain, and said a number that made me want to scream. I took it anyway. On the bus home, I sat at the back and cried with my face turned to the window. I cried for the chain, for my mother, for the fat bird in the mango tree she couldn't see anymore. I cried until the woman next to me offered me a sweet. Then I wiped my face, bought a dark green dress from the market with the tags still on, and borrowed heels from my neighbor.I told myself it was armor.---Vance Tower was forty
Chapter 5REIGNSI didn't sleep that night. I sat on the hospital floor with my back against my mother's bed and my cracked phone in my hand, and I read everything I could find about the Vance brothers.I started with Rhett, because I wanted to know exactly how much I should hate him.It didn't take long. He was everywhere. There was a new picture almost every week. Rhett on a yacht with a girl in a red bikini. Rhett outside a club at three in the morning with a girl in a silver dress. Rhett at a football match, a car launch, a birthday party, and every time a different girl on his arm, a different hand on his chest. The girls never lasted. I found one interview with a model who cried on camera. She said he took her to Dubai for a weekend, told her she was special, and then blocked her number on the flight home. She found out from his driver.Another girl wrote a long post about him. She said he never remembered her name, and he called her "sweetheart" the whole time because it was ea
