Chapter 4

REIGNS

That was when I heard the heels.

Click. Click. Click.

It was a sharp, clean sound, nothing like the soft shoes of the nurses. The whole ward seemed to hear it. People turned their heads. Even the crying baby went quiet.

Odalys walked down the middle of the ward like it was a runway.

She was wearing a cream dress and gold earrings, with big black sunglasses on her face. A bodyguard walked two steps behind her. She didn't look at any of the sick people in the beds. She looked straight ahead until she reached us.

Then she stopped at the foot of my mother's bed and slowly took off her sunglasses.

"So this is where she ended up," she said.

I stood up. "Get out."

"I just got here."

"Get out, Odalys. Now."

"I came to see it with my own eyes." She looked around the ward, at the dirty walls and the old fan and Mr. Bassey coughing into his hand. "I wanted to know what it looked like. I've been wondering for fifteen years."

"You cut her treatment. She could die."

"My mother did die." Her voice didn't rise. It stayed cold and quiet. "Nobody cut anything for her. She just lay in her room and stopped eating, and nobody came. Your mother made sure of that."

"That's not my mother's fault!"

"Isn't it?"

My mother pushed the blanket off her legs.

"Mama, don't—"

She didn't listen. She swung her feet to the floor and stood up, holding the bed rail. She was so weak her knees shook. The drip line in her arm pulled tight. She took one step, then another, and she reached out and caught Odalys's hand with both of hers.

"Please," my mother said. "Please, my dear. I know what I did. I know I hurt your mother. I will carry that until I die. Punish me. Please. But not Reign. She was a child. She did nothing. She never asked for any of this."

Odalys looked down at my mother's hands on hers.

For one second, I thought I saw something in her face. Something small. Something that might have been human.

Then she pulled her hand away.

She pulled so hard that my mother lost her balance. She fell back and her hip hit the metal bed rail with a loud bang. The drip line tore right out of her arm. Blood ran down her wrist and dripped onto the floor.

"Mama!"

I caught her before she hit the ground. She was gasping. Her whole body was shaking.

"Nurse!" I screamed. "Nurse! Somebody help!"

People were shouting. Mr. Bassey was trying to get up. A nurse was running down the ward.

And Odalys just stood there.

She didn't move. She didn't reach out. She didn't even look surprised. She took a white handkerchief from her bag and wiped her hand, the hand my mother had touched. Slowly, like she was wiping off dirt.

"You took my father," she said to my mother. "You took my mother's life. This is what you deserve."

The nurse pushed past her and pressed gauze against my mother's arm. I held my mother's head against my chest. She was crying now, quiet broken sounds, and saying sorry, sorry, sorry, over and over.

I looked up at my sister.

"I will never forgive you for this," I said. "Never. Not as long as I live."

"I don't need your forgiveness." She put her sunglasses back on. "I need your signature. Sixty days, Reign. You'll marry Rhett Vance, and you'll smile at the wedding."

"I'd rather die."

"Then she will." She nodded at my mother. "Your choice."

She turned to leave. Then she stopped and looked back over her shoulder.

"Oh. And don't think the Vances want you either," she said. "I met Rhett yesterday. I showed him your picture. He laughed. He said he doesn't touch bastards." She smiled, just a little. "Even the man you're meant to marry thinks your blood is dirty."

Click. Click. Click.

She walked out the way she came in. Nobody stopped her.

---

That night, the nurses moved my mother's bed to the corner, away from the window. They said it was because of the fall. I think it was because she was a problem now.

She fell asleep around eleven with her bandaged arm on her chest. I sat on the cold floor beside her bed because there was no chair.

I didn't want to believe what Odalys said about Rhett. She lied about everything. She was cruel for fun.

But I looked it up anyway.

It took me four minutes. A gossip blog had posted it that same afternoon. A photo of Rhett Vance outside a club, sunglasses on at night, a girl on his arm. And under it, a quote from "a close friend."

Rhett thinks the whole thing is a joke. He said there's no way he's marrying the mistress's kid. He said he doesn't do bastards.

I read it until the words blurred.

So it was true. All of it.

I looked at my mother sleeping in the corner of that crowded, hot, dirty ward. I looked at the blood still dried on the edge of her sheet. I thought about Odalys wiping her hand with that white handkerchief.

And something in me went very, very still.

Odalys needed this deal. She needed it more than she had ever needed anything. Without my name on that marriage paper, she lost her house, her company, her whole life.

She thought that made me her tool.

But a tool can cut the hand that holds it.

I wiped my cracked screen with my thumb. I opened a new search.

Cassian Vance.

If Odalys wanted a war, I would take the one thing she was promised.

Chapter 10REIGNSWhen I got up to my flat, there was a small box sitting on the floor outside my door.It was plain brown cardboard. No name. No note. No stamp.I looked up and down the dark hallway. Nobody.I picked it up and opened it.Inside, on a piece of folded cloth, was my mother's gold chain. The one I sold. The one my father gave her the year I was born. It was the same chain, with the same small scratch on the clasp.I stood in the hallway holding it and didn't understand. I turned the box over. I checked the cloth. There was nothing. Nobody knew I had sold it. Nobody except the man at the pawn shop. And whoever had followed me there.I didn't sleep. I sat on the mattress with the chain in my hand and my phone in the other, and I scrolled the news because I couldn't stop myself. Then I saw the headline, and my whole body went cold.ASHFORD HEIRESS ANNOUNCES BROTHER'S RETURNThere was a picture of Odalys outside the Ashford office, calm and perfect in grey. Chapter 9REIGNSI woke up to my phone buzzing. It didn't stop. It buzzed and buzzed against the floor beside my mattress until it slid off the edge. I picked it up and squinted at the cracked screen. Forty-three notifications, from people I hadn't spoken to in years. Old school friends, a girl from the restaurant, a cousin of a neighbor.Have you seen this??Reign is this you???OMG girl what happenedI opened the first link.It was me.It was me on the top floor of Vance Tower, in the green dress, with Odalys dragging me by the hair. Someone had filmed it from behind a desk. The video was shaky, but you could see everything. My face. The price tag in Odalys's hand. The slap. The caption said, in big white letters:MISTRESS'S DAUGHTER TRIES TO STEAL SISTER'S BILLIONAIRE 💀It had two million views. It had been up for nine hours.I watched the whole thing with my heart in my throat. I waited for the end. For the part where she pushed me. For the part where I hung over forty floors of

Chapter 8ODALYSReign's face changed. For two days, I had watched her stay calm. At the funeral, at the will reading, even in that dirty hospital ward, she had held her face still. It had driven me mad.Now it cracked."You want to talk about blood?" she said. Her voice was low and shaking. "Fine. Let's talk about blood. Do you want to know what's in the second drawer of his desk, Odalys?"I went cold."My baby pictures," she said. "All of them. From the day I was born. My first steps. My first day of school. He kept them in his desk and looked at them every night. My mother told me. He told her.""Shut up.""Did he keep yours? Did he ever keep yours?" She stepped closer. "He never loved you. He paid for you. You were the daughter he had to have. I was the one he wanted."I slapped her.It was so hard that her head snapped to the side. The sound echoed across the whole floor. When she turned back, her bottom lip was split, and a thin line of blood ran down her chin. She stared at me.

Chapter 7ODALYS I came to Vance Tower to sign my engagement papers. That was all. It was a simple meeting. Mr. Adeyemi had drawn up the agreement, and Cassian's lawyers had checked it. All I had to do was walk in, sign my name, shake his hand, and leave. I had planned it down to the minute. Twenty minutes in his office, then lunch, then home.I didn't want to marry Cassian Vance. I didn't want to marry anyone. But I wanted to lose my father's company even less. So I put on my white dress, I did my hair, and I told myself it was just business. Just one more paper to sign. The assistant looked scared when I stepped out of the lift."Miss Ashford. You're early.""I'm on time. Is he free?""He, um…" The man looked at the door, then back at me. "He has someone with him.""Who?"He didn't answer. That was when I knew something was wrong.I walked past him to the office door. It wasn't fully closed. And through the gap, I heard a voice I would know anywhere."Marry me instead of her."I st

He was never really in it.""I'll get it back. I promise. I'll buy it back.""I know you will." She touched my face. "Whatever you're doing, be careful. That family eats people."I kissed her forehead and left before she could see my face. The pawn shop gave me less than it was worth. Of course they did. The man looked at me, looked at the chain, and said a number that made me want to scream. I took it anyway. On the bus home, I sat at the back and cried with my face turned to the window. I cried for the chain, for my mother, for the fat bird in the mango tree she couldn't see anymore. I cried until the woman next to me offered me a sweet. Then I wiped my face, bought a dark green dress from the market with the tags still on, and borrowed heels from my neighbor.I told myself it was armor.---Vance Tower was forty

Chapter 5REIGNSI didn't sleep that night. I sat on the hospital floor with my back against my mother's bed and my cracked phone in my hand, and I read everything I could find about the Vance brothers.I started with Rhett, because I wanted to know exactly how much I should hate him.It didn't take long. He was everywhere. There was a new picture almost every week. Rhett on a yacht with a girl in a red bikini. Rhett outside a club at three in the morning with a girl in a silver dress. Rhett at a football match, a car launch, a birthday party, and every time a different girl on his arm, a different hand on his chest. The girls never lasted. I found one interview with a model who cried on camera. She said he took her to Dubai for a weekend, told her she was special, and then blocked her number on the flight home. She found out from his driver.Another girl wrote a long post about him. She said he never remembered her name, and he called her "sweetheart" the whole time because it was ea
