CHAPTER 4: She Was Just A Fake Wife

[Seven Days Earlier]

A week ago, Seraphina and Alexander finally tied the knot. It was a long-awaited moment for Seraphina, who had loved him secretly for years.

Alexander wasn't able to attend the registrar's office, but he signed the papers so the process went through successfully, making them officially Mr. and Mrs. Thorne.

Given how sudden the arrangement was, Seraphina didn't mind skipping a big wedding ceremony. That could wait. All she really wanted was to grow closer to Alexander.

Eager to fulfill her role as his wife, she had excitedly headed to Grandma Eleonor's study that day to meet him, only to hear his cold, dismissive words through the door.

"My wife?" Alexander had sneered through the door. "Grandma, have you forgotten why I agreed to this arrangement? It was to secure the company, not to pamper a fake wife."

Seraphina froze.

A fake wife. That was all she was to Alexander Thorne.

Hearing Alexander dismiss their marriage as a mere business agreement felt like a dagger to her heart. She closed her eyes as sadness washed over her.

She remained outside. So, he never really wanted this marriage, she thought.

"How can you say that, Alex?" Eleonor’s voice flared from inside. "Her grandfather died barely a month ago. You married Seraphina but you let her sign those papers alone! The least you could do is comfort her."

"Grandma, I’m not a doctor," Alexander replied, his tone flat and indifferent. "She doesn't need me. If she's struggling with her loss, hire her a grief counselor."

"You brat! You didn't even try to talk to her before you signed those papers," Eleonor hissed.

"That's not necessary. We will divorce eventually," Alexander added. “You know that I loved someone else, Grandma. So, there's no point in wasting our time."

Seraphina went completely still. So he already loved someone else. The realization shattered her.

If he had merely forgotten his promise to marry and love her once they grew up, she would have tried to win him over. She genuinely believed they had a lifetime ahead to build a future together, but knowing his heart belonged to another woman deeply wounded her.

Part of her wanted to step inside and pretend she hadn't heard anything, but her feet wouldn't move. Her mother’s final words replayed endlessly in her mind.

In the end, she slowly pulled her hand back from the door handle. Without a word, she turned and walked down the grand staircase, leaving the estate in silence. Some pain was simply too heavy for words.

_

However, that evening, Grandma Eleonor invited her to dinner at a VIP lounge with Director Evelyn. Seraphina simply couldn’t decline her invitation.

"Sera, where did you go?" Eleonor asked worriedly. "I thought you were going to the estate to meet your husband."

Her husband. The word felt cold and heavy. Yes, Alexander was her husband now. But to him, she was nothing more than an inconvenient obligation.

"I just needed some air, Grandma," Seraphina said gently.

Evelyn reached out, placing a warm hand on Seraphina’s arm. "Sera, you look exhausted. Is everything alright?"

"Everything is fine, Nana," Seraphina said, giving a small, reassuring nod. Having grown up visiting the orphanage so often, she had come to love Director Evelyn like a second mother.

Seraphina turned back to Eleonor, pausing as she chose her words. "Grandma Eleonor... about my marriage with Alexander, I think it's best if we keep it strictly on paper. We don't need to carry any personal obligations to each other."

Eleonor frowned, leaning forward. "Sera, you don't have to push him away. Alexander is guarded, but if you give him time—"

"I don't want to force anything, Grandma," Seraphina interrupted quietly. "I've decided to focus entirely on my career. Having just graduated, my professor offered me an overseas training assignment."

Evelyn gasped. "An overseas assignment? Sera, I understand you just buried your grandfather, but you don't have to face this pain alone. We're here for you."

"I know, Nana, but it's exactly what I need right now," Seraphina said softly, deeply grateful for their concern.

"Sera, just give your marriage a chance," Grandma Eleonor insisted. "Try it for one week. If you still think it won't work after that, we won't stop you from leaving."

"She's right, my dear," Evelyn offered a warm smile. "Give yourselves just a week."

Seraphina sighed heavily. She had always sworn never to fight for a man whose heart belonged to someone else. Yet Grandma Eleonor’s proposal broke that resolve.

Looking at their earnest, hopeful faces, Seraphina couldn't bring herself to refuse. "Alright. I'll give it a try for one week.”

Deep down, she wasn't ready to give up on Alexander. At that time, a small part of her still wanted to give their marriage a chance, hoping her love and effort might soften his cold heart.

But that single week proved to be the most painful chapter of loving Alexander, though it finally gave her the strength she needed to walk away.

Justin laughed aloud at his sheer desperation, but he answered anyway. “Doctor Siren has agreed to treat my grandpa. She’s coming to the hospital this afternoon for the initial treatment.”“What?!” Alexander couldn’t believe that she was suddenly right within his reach. “I’m coming over immediately,” he said, his voice tight with nervous anticipation.“Haha! Right! You better get over here, buddy, or you might lose her again,” Justin teased. He was ecstatic because this was the only woman Alexander had ever shown a real reaction to. His friend was usually like a stone with any other woman, so seeing Alexander this rattled put Justin in a spectacular mood._Alexander asked Calden to cancel his entire schedule for the afternoon.“Calden, Doctor Siren agreed to treat Mr. Morgan’s case. Make sure to monitor her movements and don’t lose track of her again!” Alexander said authoritatively.Calden was shocked by the news but agreed and informed their tech team right away. David immediately dialed Rio Ballmer, the most trusted personal assistant of the Morgan patriarch. Is everything okay?" Rio asked.David said, “Mr. Ballmer, I have good news for you. The legendary physician, Doctor Siren, has agreed to personally take the Morgan patriarch's case."On the other end of the line, Rio froze, his breath catching in his throat. "Doctor Siren? Are you absolutely certain? We have tried to reach her so many times. Even the head of the Thorne family helped us look for her, but she was completely unreachable.”They had heard Doctor Siren’s legendary name mentioned multiple times in the most exclusive medical and political circles. She was a medical prodigy known for curing impossible, rare diseases. As far as Rio knew, Mr. Thorne had personally witnessed her incr

In her room, Seraphina was lying on her bed looking blankly at the ceiling. She couldn’t fall asleep yet. It had already been five years, but Alexander hadn't asked for a divorce yet. She didn’t know what he was thinking. Is he still waiting for the woman he loved? she thought.Suddenly, her phone rang. It was David Jackson, her chief research partner at G&S Medical Research Center."David, is everything alright at the lab?" she asked authoritatively."Sera, thank goodness you're back! Rain just told me," David's voice echoed with profound relief. "Remember your suggestion regarding our new research? You were right about Paclitaxel. It neutralizes the cancer cells and stabilizes the compound perfectly.""That's excellent news," Seraphina replied."But our supply is completely tapped out," David's tone laced with sudden panic. "Without it, the whole project halts.""Calm down, David. I know how rare it is. Can't we get it in Valerius?""We can, but only the Morgan family holds the ent

Alexander stood frozen in the dimly lit hallway, his fingers tightening around Shiro's leather collar. Mrs. Thorne. His wife. He couldn't explain the familiar feeling that stirred in his chest whenever his wife was mentioned. He quickly brushed the sensation aside. It’s probably because I’m guilty of making her feel like I abandoned her with her kidnappers, he convinced himself. She had simply walked out of his house without waiting for his explanation. If that was the reason he was so restless, he would clarify everything to her now.He took a deep breath. Walking slowly to the door, he spoke softly through the wood. “Seraphina, I know you can hear me. I know you don’t want to talk to me. I’m really sorry about what happened before during your kidnapping.”“I will not make excuses for my actions during that time, but I just want you to know it isn’t what it looks like. I was trying to stall for time so my tech team could locate you, so I was saying things I didn’t mean. I will not

Just three feet away, the woman he’d chased for five years remained intoxicating. Seraphina spoke briefly into the phone, her full lips curving into a confident smirk. Oblivious to Alexander’s presence staring at her in shock, she flipped her visor back down.Green light. Before Alexander could unbuckle his seatbelt, she revved the engine. Her custom Artemis Superleggera bike roared to life. Her driving skills were absurdly sharp, slicing through tight gaps like a pro-racer."Follow that black bike!" Alexander yelled at his driver, snapping violently out of his trance. "Don't lose her! Do not lose her!""Sir, we... we can't catch her! She's doing ninety through a narrow alleyway!" the driver panicked. They tried, but their heavy sedan had zero chance of catching her nimble bike. Within three sharp turns, she vanished completely into the glittering city lights."Dammit!" Alexander slammed his hand against the leather, his heart pounding. He pulled out his phone with trembling, desper

Seraphina swiped across the tablet, scanning the confidential files Rain had given her. Rain had actually followed her to Oakreach, Cidel. Recognizing her as a top-tier cyber asset, Seraphina had pulled her straight into her unit. The documents revealed a quiet disaster. Greenhaven Sanctuary had nearly been wiped out. While Seraphina was deployed overseas, Director Evelyn’s sister-in-law used the facility's registration to run an illegal shell operation. Authorities were close to confiscating the land and sending the kids to state foster care.Had Grandma Eleonor not used her massive influence to freeze the foreclosure, Greenhaven would have vanished before Seraphina could even fly home. Seraphina’s eyes narrowed on the final page. The sister-in-law’s arrest was just a cover. The rest of the information didn't add up.Beneath the report was a hidden trail of encrypted details. She could actually decode them, but she wanted to know exactly who was pulling the strings and what the t
