The red light came and everyone was busy crossing the streets except for one lady who remained to stare at a billboard. At first, you would think she’s just admiring the model but if you can see clearer, she’s actually calculating if it’s a good death if she jumps from there.
But on second thought, it will smash her face, her whole body and she’d be remembered by many. She didn’t want that; for the media pestering her death. And so she walks away and saves the thought another time.
“Serra! Can’t you make it tonight? There’s no entrance fee for this concert! You just have to make it!” Marmi exclaimed. Serra had to cover her best friend’s mouth and glare before letting go. “Sorry!”“I told you, Marmi, I can’t. I have work later. My bills don’t wait!”
Marmi snorted, rolling her eyes at her workaholic Cinderella best friend.
“You’re going to miss your teenage life and that’s tragic! Who’s going to marry you? You don’t even have a boyfriend!”
“Marmi! Again with you being over dramatic. Marriage and having a boyfriend is a lot of work. I’ve got my hands full.” Serra shrugged and insert another book in between two big ones.
“At least just once! I want you happy!”
“I am happy! Just… I really need to pay for my bill.”
“You’re working too hard already! And you don’t even want me to help you pay those bills.”
“You’re helping me enough by staying at my side, Marmi. I don’t want you getting involved.”
For the longest time, Marmi stares at Serra, a glimpse of worry in her eyes. She finally sighs and surrenders.
“Fine! But if you need anything, just come to me, okay?”
“Of course!”
And they hugged each other before Marmi left to go home. Serra needed to stay because she works part-time in their school’s library. And just as her best friend was out of sight, the smile on her face faded.
Serra could not possibly come to Marmi when those loan sharks start coming back and ruining everything. It’s not that she’s embarrassed about getting drowned in debts, it’s just Marmi’s safety that she’s worried about. Who would risk their sweet best friend?
After Serra’s library work, she goes to a cafe and works as a waitress for four hours. Sometimes, she’d get picked on by those popular girls at school, laughing at her when she serves their drinks. But Serra doesn’t care, she just wants to pay her parents’ debts. It isn’t just the library or the cafe that she works at, she’s also a dishwasher at a night bar starting nine in the evening to midnight. And sometimes there are overtimes extending to an hour.
“Serra! Can you pass me a Collins, please?”“Sure, Eli!” Serra wipes her hand and passes the glass. Although her jobs requires a lot of physical work for her, she enjoys the company of her lovely workmates. “What are you making?”
“I am making liquor topped with juice. Do you want to try some?” Eli asked.
“Oh, no! A shot costs my entire shift. I could never!” She chuckles awkwardly. “Besides… I don’t drink.”
“Shame! But you are eighteen, aren’t you, love?”
“Yes. Yes, I am.”
“That’s good to hear! You’ve been working really hard. Have you not any interest to party and enjoy life? What’s that word that you guys call-- the uhh… yo--”
“Yolo?” Serra uttered and Eli made a loud yes making them both laugh. “That isn’t in my vocabulary as of the moment. I am saving for something.”
“Are you trying to leave this town? How much have you saved so far, love?”
“Not really and just enough to get me by!”
Eli was ten years older than Serra and she respects the lady. Though Eli started the job about a week ago, Serra feels comfortable around her. She felt like she had a new mother.
That very next day, Serra was so surprised she got pulled out of class. In a room, she was told to enter and there she saw Eli bawling her eyes out when she saw Serra.“Serra! My love, I am so sorry to come here in the middle of the day!” Eli cried, hugging Serra by the waist when she got near.
It seems like the teacher understood they needed some private time alone and so the teacher left. Serra was dumbfounded, frowning a little of the confusion that Eli was there crying.
“Is something wrong, Eli?” she asked the lady, her voice full of concern.
“My husband just got into an accident, love! I need money to pay them for the down payment before they need to operate!”
When Eli mentions the money, Serra could not help but freeze for a second. She knew what Eli must have come for in regards to the saving that she shared last night. But there was no time to be selfish. This was a life and death situation!
“I promise I will pay you by next week, Serra. I promise by then I will pay you with my husband’s check that I will receive by then!”
If it’s next week, of course, she can still pay the loan sharks. So, Serra took Eli’s hands and grab them putting a big smile on her face.
“I’ll lend you the money that I saved, Eli but you have to promise to get them back by next week. I really can’t afford to skip bills.”
“Oh, you’re so sweet, Serra! Of course, I’d pay you by then! Thank you!”
Eli pulled Serra in for a big tight hug and Serra was never been that happy in a while. She felt like she was able to help someone. For the first time in a while, she felt her sentiment change.

That new point of view didn’t last long. It was almost the end of the week and Eli was not showing up at work. It had made Serra restless, so restless that she has broken three glasses in the past few days. She was given a final warning and now is in danger of losing her job.“Tomorrow…” she whispers leaning against a bridge, “if Eli doesn’t show up, I might have to die.”
“A demon attacked the outskirt of Menna again, my dear priestess! The Demon King’s pawn has gone far beyond our borders once more!” Attari, the commander of the land governed by the monks, priests, and priestesses, reported to Clairra, the highest priestess.“And what remains of the village? You have troops, a priest, what had happened?” Clairra asked, her voice mellow as she performs a prayer.“He appeared before us, my dear priestess!”Finally, Clairra opened her eyes of amber, staring into her the lighted incense but her mind wandered through. The Demon King, stepping inside the light’s territory? He must be mad!“Who else has seen him, Attari?”“The villagers, my priestess.”“Did he harm anyone? Told anyone what reason he has to have stepped inside the sacred land?”Attari took a moment to respond. “The survivors told us he did not harm any of the people but his demons did! He only stared at this tower, like he was looking for something, my priestess.”But he could barely see the
Instantly after hearing her title, Clairra’s guard alerted, and within a second appear her bow and arrow ready to shoot. She was aiming at a tree. At first, you will not see anything in the shadows but long enough, crimson red eyes appeared.“Who are you?” she asked, her voice sturdy like the string she pulls.“I’ve always stared at that tower, wondering what glory it holds to be standing so tall.” His voice was deep and calm, yet there was something in it that Clairra finds alarming. “I asked, who are you not why you were here, demon!” The demon laughed mockingly and jumped down but remained in the shadow of the big tree.“Then I shall call you, human,” he says while stepping into the light. He had such human features that Clairra could not help her eyes widening. Demons can take any form but why is this one so human? Even his eyes weren’t red! He has marble electric blue eyes. Where did the crimson go?“Show me your true form!” She demanded.“True form? Is this not true enough to
Tomorrow came by fast for Serra. Her eyes were a little puffed from crying and deciding what she has to do. Surely she won’t be able to go to the police and help when she was warned by those loan sharks that even the police officers are in alliance with them. She is dead meat.“Serra!” Marmi calls, running to her with a big bright smile. But when she got close her smiles faded. “What’s with your face? Are you okay?!”Serra had to level the kind of smile Marmi had. “Yes! And to support the yes, do you have a concert that is free tonight? I think I want to go have fun with you!”“What?” Marmi’s jaw dropped and her face came alive once more. “Of course! There is one at the Loop’s Dome! The Rocketeers are performing! Are you sure?”“Yes, I am so sure!” Serra giggles that made Marmi hug her tightly, shifting weight side by side. This is where Serra flashed a sad smile. At least for the last time, she is going to make her friend happy. “We better get to class first, Marmi!”“Oh, yeah! We’re
And so, Clairra visits the old mage in his humble home. She enters from the open door without knocking for she knows the mage is aware of her presence. There was no living room or any chair. She was directed to a messy room of books lying everywhere and the old mage sitting in the air, holding one in his hands.“There is no way to get to the Sage unless he wants to see you, my dear priestess,” the old mage, Heije bluntly told her. He was not even looking at her.“How important is this Sage? Why can’t I get to him?”“Let me see,” he closes his book and with his wrinkly face looked at her, “he can easily turn the emperor of the North against you.”“Fair enough.” Clairra clears her throat. “I am certain you know what troubles we have here on our land, old mage. You know very well that the demons are attacking us. I have to do some--”“It’s always you that has to do something, my dear priestess,” the old mage interrupted her, “Why not the generals? Why have not the elders that live on top
"And you are here once more, priestess of the East."Clairra swallowed hard as she raises her head. She was scared of the tomorrow without her looking after her people but this sacrifice that she's going to make is for her people. And to the soul that's from another world, she hopes she doesn't try to die in this era as well. "I have decided," she stated. "I bargain my soul for that spell, Sage of No Name.""Very well," he uttered, taking heavy steps towards her and stopping when he was in front of her. His finger slowly lifted and touched her forehead. A crescent moon marking appeared on her forehead but after a second, it disappeared. "Your lips are to be touched by the demon's lips and he will be under your command.""Will it really work?"The Sage of No Name slowly nodded his head. "Once you do, your soul will be bargained. You're wise. You would not show up in front of me if you had not found yourself a solution, priestess of the east.""Of course!"For the first time, the Sage
Slowly getting Serra's consciousness back, she gradually opens her heavy eyes only to find a weird setup. She spent her time just gazing, wondering if it was the ceiling or a hood of a bed. Am I in heaven? She raises her hand and moved her fingers. It seemed real but her hands were looking softer than she remembers. She doesn't even remember having a soft bed. When she realized that, she abruptly sat up, looking at her surrounding through what seemed to be a thin curtain that was tied to the poles on each corner of the bed. Serra felt like she was in a lucid dream so she decided to pinch her arm but all she felt is a little pain from pinching herself."What in the world is this?" she murmurs under her breath. "Is this how it is to die?"Right at that moment, there was someone knocking on the door which made her look that way. Before she could utter any words, it suddenly opened, revealing someone who is as pretty as a sunrise. Perhaps an angel."You're awake!" the lady gasped the mo
(Serra's POV)The letter didn't contain why I couldn't remember living as Clairra. Written there were just details of who Clairra is, her responsibilities as a priestess and to take care of her husband-to-be. If I am really Clairra, why would I write that letter? Have I known that I would forget?"My priestess, is the temperature of the water just right?" Eyaren asked.I open my eyes and turned to her with a smile. "Yes, it is. I'm just really wondering why there have to be so many servants in this room when I can bathe myself." "I can make them leave, priestess.""Please do."Eyaren did as I instructed. Finally! Time for me to think. I still can't shake the fact that this seemed like a dream or an experiment. What if I was just saved to be fooled into thinking I'm in another universe? Scientists are crazy. The world has gone insane so it can be the answer. This isn't my only problem. I am going to get married soon to someone I don't recall ever meeting. Do I even love him? Maybe w
Once awoken, Serra abruptly sit up, wide awake while touching her neck with shaken hand. She feels alright, no pain or anything but she’s just scared. Was it a nightmare? She asked herself. “You’re awake,” a masculine voice said that made her look up. Her eyes immediately grew large to see the man who was draining her life in the nightmare. “It seems like your spell had worked on me.”Spell? What does he mean? Serra was left to stare at him with furrowed brows. Earlier she thought it would be the last pain but here she is ending up alive again. Strange enough, she don’t feel any pain in her body. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she stated. “Who are you anyway? What’s your deal with me?” He raised a brow, a smirk forming at the side of his mouth. Sera couldn’t help but feel alarmed by it but she could never shout. “You tricked me, Priestess. And now you’re acting like you don’t know who you’re betrothed to.” It took Serra a couple of moments to finally figure it out. Thi
