“She fell through a hunter's trap? They're not even supposed to be here!” Rosie’s voice was full of panic.
“I know, I’ll do something about it; just let me take care of her,” Thane’s voice makes me open my eyes to a room with baby blue walls and a bright ass light.
“Ouch, that hurts; turn it off,” I moan, putting my hand in front of my eyes.
“Evette,” Thane’s voice was full of relief; he sat on the edge of my bed, “How does your ankle feel? You fell pretty hard.”
I look to my ankle under the sheet; as I pull it back, I notice a terrible bruise on my ankle, and when I try to move it, it shoots pain up my leg, “Oh no, nope. I’m not moving.”
Thane gives me a warm smile, “You can leave, Rosie, thank you.”
“My pleasure! Just yell if you need me; I’ll be out here,” She leaves, shutting the door.
It was silent for a bit before one of us spoke up, “You fell in a hunter’s trap. They probably found out there were werewolves here.”
“Hunters?” I ask.
“Yeah, these Hunters kill supernatural creatures; it’s like their life’s mission,” Thane gazes down at my hand and swallows, “I’m sorry I yelled at you. I feel like a jackass-” I chuckle, interrupting him,” Cause you are one,” I said playfully, smiling at him.
I then noticed the new scars on Thane’s arms, he wasn’t wearing a shirt either, and his abdomen was wrapped in bandages, “What happened?” I ask.
Thane looks down, “Oh, this? I jumped in after you; I guess the Hunter put Wolf’s Bane thorns in his trap, tore me up while I climbed out with you.”
My eyes widened, and I felt a slight flutter in my chest, “You saved me?”
“Yeah,” He chuckles, “Why the hell wouldn’t I?”
I wrap my arms around myself, “Thane, this mate bond thing, It confused me. I mean, I don’t know you at all. How could we be prophesied to be together?”
The corner of Thane's lips curve, “I know, this is all-new to you but, this has been going on for centuries. The Goddess Selene chooses our mates. She knows our hearts and what we need.”
Since I had him alone, I was going to take advantage of asking him about his brother, “What happened to you guys? You and your brother?”
He sighs, “I knew you were gonna bring that up sooner or later,” he sighs heavily, “Believe it or not, Atticus and I used to be very close when we were younger,” he then rubs his neck, “And just to let you know, you aren’t our first mate….”
“What? Really? I thought this was a one-time deal?”
“Sometimes, but I guess the Goddess still has hope for us,” He smiles meekly. I stay silent, waiting for him to continue.
“My brother and I were born on a Red Moon; our midwife witch prophesied we would share a mate and become the strongest pack in the domain. If we stayed together as a trio, but that didn’t happen. My brother was going through a violent phase; he would go on killing sprees when his wolf started kicking,” Thane must have seen my eyes widen because he explains further.
“When your wolf awakens, one of two things can happen. One, you could endure the urges of wanting to tare shit apart or, you can’t fight it at all. One night we found my brother drenched in blood, cradling our previous mate, Khione, in his arms,” Thane’s voice becomes strained, “He kept saying he was sorry, over and over again. Finally, when the neighboring back found out, we had to banish him. And now he’s become the Leader of Rogues and a real pain in my ass.”
“You hold a grudge against him, don’t you,” I look at Thane, feeling an ache in my chest. Thane’s brow furrow, “Yes. But he’s still my brother. No matter how much I hate him for what he did.”
There was something off about this story if Mate bonds were as strong as everyone is saying they are, there was no way Atticus could have killed his mate. But he wasn’t that way when he nuzzled my back with his nose. He even backed off for me.
“Are you afraid he’s going to kill me as well?” I ask, remembering how protective he had been when I had got in between them.
Thane looks down, sorrow heavy in his eyes, “He’s done it before….”
Hearing him talk about this was the first time I saw real emotion from him, instead of his sterile front, “Thank you for saving me,” I subconsciously reach for his arm with the bandage, “Does it hurt-”
Thane takes a sharp inhale and I flinch, “Oh! I’m sorry!” Then I see his smirk and pressing his lips together.
I leer at him. “I can pinch with my toes, and that shit will hurt,” I found myself smiling.
He chuckles, “Your ankle is sprained-AH!”
I pinched him with my other foot, and he jumped up, rubbing his asscheek, “What the hell?!” He chuckles
“You forgot I have another set of toes,” I wiggle them under the sheets.
“Who the hell pinches with their toes and not their fingers!” He shouts while chuckling.
I wiggle my eyebrows, “Me.”
Thane looks to my foot then I see a gleam in his eye, “Hm,” he sits on the edge of my bed again, “Good thing I know a kryptonite for pinching toes….”
I squint at him, suspicious of what he was trying to pull, but before I know it, he’s tickling my foot.
“AH! No! No, Stop it!”
I couldn't stop laughing, damn it, I hated how ticklish I was on my feet.
Suddenly the door burst open, “Hey!” Rosie’s hands sit on her hips, “ There is no tickle play allowed in my quarters! Stop harassing my patient Thane!”
Thane and I look at each other then start busting up laughing, “Alright, that's it,” Rosie goes to Thane and pinches his ear leading him out of the room, “Hey! What the hell is up with women and pinching!?”
I hear him say as Rosie leads him out into the hall. Maybe, this would be so bad after all…
As I start to fall asleep, a splintering headache pounds in my skull, “Ugh,” I groan, “Oh no, not again,” this was the start of another nightmare.
~Atticus~ "Why did you not kill him! He was right there!" Harvey decided to get too close to me, and I could smell the stench of his breath. "Back off, you reek," It had taken my whole begin not to take Evette with me. However, part of me felt that I deserved it, but I wouldn't let that show with these guys. "Whatever, you missed a chance to kill your bother, and that's a shame. You will never get to see her, you know? Thane is a hard ass. He probably has her locked up in a tower," he chuckles. I leer at him, "You just love rubbing salt in the wound, don't you?" He shrugs, "
"There it is, the last Redwood tree," I say to myself, but beyond here, the forest seemed to get darker. I brave through the last bit of light and slip into the gloomy-looking forest.I didn't even know where to find them, let alone if I was going the right way. Maybe my instincts would tell me? Ugh. Being a Werewolf was confusing as fuck.I had no idea how far I had gone, but suddenly the hairs on the back of my neck stood up; I froze.Someone was watching me.I try to calm myself and keep moving, but the snap of a branch makes me burst into a sprint. I race through the trees; I glance over my shoulder and see a brown wolf, probably one of the rogues.
I remembered little things that felt off when I was a child. But my parents just blew it off as a phase I'd grow out of, and eventually, I did. Although, I always felt like something was missing. Maybe that's why I turned to the career of investigating crimes. I couldn't solve my puzzle, but I could solve others, and it was somewhat of a distraction. "Yet, another thing Thane has failed to tell me." "Get used to that," Atticus says, leaning against a tree, "He's not one to bear all the little details." I leer at Atticus, "And you do?" "I prefer to keep it brutally honest," Atticus says. I had dealt with many people, but Atticus seemed to have a wa
I try my best to stay clear of Thane as I rush back to my room to change out of Atticus' shirt, which I was sure as hell, Thane would be able to smell on me.A shower would be best to get most of his scent off of me. So when I get to my room, I close the door and quickly get into the shower. The last thing I wanted was to be questioned about where I was and what I was doing. I was a grown woman, I'm pretty sure I could do what I wanted, but Thane almost made me feel like I couldn't.It was annoying me.The hot steamy shower was just what I needed, I take a relieved sigh as I get out of the bathroom, but as I enter my room, I halt and almost drop my towel.Thane was sitting on my bed with Atticus' shirt in his clenched fist.Crap. I should have burned it; I cleared my throat, "Thane?""Why the hell are you lying to me?" Thane's voice was heavy with anger. I swallowed but gathered my courage."I went for a walk-""To see At
"Your joking?" "Nope. Bottoms up," I take the first two shots and take the burn with no chaser, "Now, you and I are going to play a game. Have you ever played Truth or Drink?" "No." "We ask each other questions, and you can't just answer with yes or no. You have to spill all or take a stiff drink," I play with my hair. Thane chuckles, "Can I go first?" I look him up and down suspiciously, "Sure, ask me anything." Thane turns to me, then slides a shot over to me, "What did you do with Atticus?" My eyes widened, now I knew why he agreed to play with me; I saw him smirk; I looked at the shot then decided not to take it, "I got chased by Rogues; Atticus jumped in and saved me. I asked him if he had anything to do with my parent's death, he didn't react well. Then a Hunter showed up and tried to kill me; Atticus took the blow-" "He what?" Thane interrupts; he then grabs my arm, "Are you alright?" "Yeah, I'm fine, Atticus got
As I walked up to my room, I ran into Rosie and told her what had just happened. "What?! That thing glowed?" She takes my wrist, examining it, "Whoa, I heard about these things, but I haven't seen one." "Do you have any idea why it did that?" I ask. "Well, I'm not sure but, I heard these things are a part of you so, I guess if it felt your attraction to Thane, it could emulate it," Rosie says, "But don't worry, it's not a bad thing, unless-" Rosie pauses, not finishing her sentence. "Unless, what?" I ask with a raised brow. "Well, I've been thinking, are you planning on rejecting one of them?" She asks. I hold my bracelet to my chest, "That is a big question," I swallow. Honestly, I didn't want to do that to Thane or Atticus. It didn't feel right, "I wasn't planning on it..." "You're going to have a hell of a time going back and forth with them. They aren't exactly on speaking terms," she rubs he arm, then an idea pops in my he
Because I had cried non-stop last night, Thane had slept with me in my room. It was odd waking up to him next to me, but I oddly didn't mind it. He looked so peaceful when he was asleep; I found myself moving a piece of hair from his face and admiring his long lashes. I smile, then he opens his eyes and catches me gawking at him. I freeze, then he smirks, "Whose creepy now?" his voice was full of morning raspiness, the type I loved. My lips pressed together, "I was just going to pinch your nose closed because of your snoring," I lied. Thane raises a brow, "Really? How come your mind went nuts when you were starting at me?" he sits up, leaning towards me, "You weren't thinking of snoring," he whispers. I swallow hard, "Stop that; it's annoying." I crossed my arms even though I knew he was right. My mind had drifted off to a naughty place, but I couldn't help it. I was a fan of mornings... "You know what, I'm gonna learn how to put a lock on my mind, so
~Atticus~ There isn't a day that goes by that I'm not thinking about her, and it drives me nuts. Not seeing Evette was hard, and it put me on edge. "Having a bad day?" Lilia asks, perched on a rock. I clench my aching knuckles," Why do you ask?" "You're giving those trees quite the pounding, " she chuckles. I had to focus my frustration on something, and the trunk of a tree was better than anything else. "What's wrong handsome? Evette got you all wound up?" Lilia asks; I can tell without looking at her that she's smiling. "Just pen
