(Brielle’s POV)
My eyes squinted as I stared at the Kirkwood Residence. The baroque architecture mansion stood magnificent but silent under the starry night. Unlike my grandmother’s house, lampposts were everywhere, brightening the lawn. The mansion was seldom opened to the public because most of the time, the family never really stayed here, except for a few days for business, or maybe the owner wanted some peace of mind when escaping the city.
Dad has mentioned this place before in passing when rumors spread that there were ghosts seen in this place, while Mom shared about the Kirkwood being vampires. Still, she brushed off the idea when she and Grandma got invited to the party and personally talked to Nicolai and his wife. She saw how the couple ate at the party, appreciating the drinks and food while conversing with the locals.
No one could prove whether there were ghosts or the Kirkwood as vampires because even the locals hired to maintain the place did not see anything unusual at the mansion.
Except me.
“Interesting,” I muttered, slowly opening the gate.
I already expected dogs to bark or maybe some traps for those who enter the area uninvited, but nothing of those things I thought happened. I walked the long pavement as if wandering in a park at night, thinking this place must be really beautiful in the morning.
For an estate this big and probably has old or antique stuff inside, the tall metal gate was slightly open, and no one was guarding the place. Studying the area, there was one thing I noticed, though. It was quiet.
Really quiet.
My eyes narrowed, hoping to see something, but there was nothing unusual in this place. I was not surprised when the main door was left open, but the hands that grabbed me when I pushed the door caught me off-guard.
With the light flickering from the fireplace and his intoxicating scent, I recognized Cole immediately, not needing to use my strength and skills to attack him.
“What’s a princess doing here alone?” He asked sternly, pressing my body to the wall.
A wicked smile curved my lips. “You left me in the cold, Cole,” I said, pouting and talking seductively at him as I touched the collar of his polo shirt.
I raised my eyes, meeting his beautiful blue eyes. Squinting my eyes, I raised my hand and let my index finger trace his cheeks, moving up toward his eyebrows. “There’s something intriguing about you, Cole,” I whispered. “Your eyes -”
Before I could finish what I was about to say, he lowered his head and crushed his lips to mine. My heart pounded at the stirring emotions while kissing Cole. Giles would think I was out of my mind going here, and I wondered what the best excuse would be.
The thought of what the guys would say vanished when Cole plunged his tongue deeper and explored the inside of my mouth. I had kissed a guy before, but not as delicious and pleasurable as Cole’s. I moaned in his mouth, raising my hands and curling my fingers to his hair as desire spiraled in my body down to my core.
He caressed my face, and I felt his hand slowly gliding down to my neck as if to strangle me, but instead of fearing him, I arched my body to him as if needing more of him. His hand slid slowly to my chest, feeling my heart erratically thumping inside my body.
When Cole moved away from my mouth, I whimpered but moaned when he tilted my head, getting more access to my neck to nip and lick my skin. I shuddered, wanting to ask him if I should take my clothes off or if he wanted to do it himself. Should it be right here? Or should we at least go to his bedroom?
The sound of a high-heels click-clack on the steps of the stairs stiffened my body, waking up my senses and making me realize why we never advanced to the couch and stayed hidden at the back of the door.
Cole has company.
I felt Cole biting my neck with his soft lips, his teeth barely touching my skin. Then he sighed as he straightened up and turned around, blocking me.
“Nick?” It was a woman’s voice.
Nick? My eyebrows raised as I peeked at his side, wanting to see the woman behind the melodic voice.
A goddess probably decided to roam the Kirkwood residence tonight as I saw the gorgeous woman in a sexy red haltered dress. She flipped her long black hair to her back as she tilted her head, trying to see who the woman behind him was.
“I’m coming,” he answered.
“Who’s that?” She asked curiously, but maybe not curious enough to see and know me.
“Lost teenager,” he answered briefly. “I’ll just bring her home. She’s Mrs. Writingham’s granddaughter.”
She rolled her eyes. “Teenagers!” She turned her back. “Don’t be long, Nick. I’ll be waiting for you in the bedroom.”
Teenager? Waiting for him? Bedroom?
I opened my mouth, wanting to rant at him because I felt cheated, but before I could utter a word, I closed and tightened my lips as he opened the door and grabbed my hand, tugging me outside toward his car and opening the door for me.
“I’m not a teenager!” I hissed as I plopped inside his car and fastened the seatbelt.
“Good, then!” He smirked as he walked toward the driver’s seat.
“You have a girlfriend?” My eyes widened, horrified as I asked him.
He didn’t answer me. Instead, he started the engine and drove the car. His silence was screaming to me that I only get frustrated but do not get an answer. When he stopped the car, I peeked outside the tinted window and realized we were already in front of the house. Using his Jeep, it only took fifteen minutes to return to my grandmother’s place.
“How did you know my place?” he asked when I didn’t move from my seat. “Did Thomas give the address to you? Did Gertrude know you're coming to my place at this hour?”
My eyes narrowed. “You know my grandmother?”
“This is a small town, Brielle. Only a few lived here, so it’s easier to get to know people,” he explained to me, ending my curiosity. He heaved a deep sigh. “Now, please, get out of my car because I have to go back. I’m in a hurry.”
I sneered at him. “Of course,” I unfastened the seatbelt and pushed the door open. “Thanks for the ride back!”
“No, thank you. It was a fun night, Brielle,” he smirked. I was about to get out when he grabbed my hand. “Don’t do this again. Don’t come to my place without me knowing it.”
I scoffed at him. “Why do you make it sound like San Rafael is a dangerous town, Cole?” I raised my eyebrows. “Or Nick?” I said, copying how the woman said his name.
He pressed his lips, suppressing a smile, but the emotions on his face changed as he saw Giles and Bryce walking back to the house. The two saw me but didn’t bother to stop to check on me.
“This may be a rural town, Brielle, but this is as dangerous as the city. Perhaps more dangerous,” he said, releasing my hand.
“Noted,” I said briefly but in a sarcastic tone, showing annoyance at him. “Can I at least have your number?” The truth? I didn’t know what to do with his number. Monty might have decided to go to the next town; if that happens, we will get rolling again.
“I’ll call you, Brielle. I promised,” he said, starting the car again. “This won’t be the last time we’d meet, but I really hope it is.”
I walked to the side, watching his car leave and thinking where he would get my number to call me and what he meant by hoping this would be the last.
(Cole’s POV)My great-great grandfather fell in love with San Rafael, and it has been his mission to keep the simplicity and beauty of the rural area. From his generation to ours, we have been the government’s conservation partner to assure the protection of its habitat and ecosystem, supporting and maintaining the site as one of the world's biodiversity hotspots. The truth? He did it for our protection. For the first time in many years, nothing ever happened in San Rafael. Life here compared with the one in the city was slow, and people who chose to stay here mainly wished to have a quiet life. As for the young generations hoping to have different lives, wanting the vivacity and complexity, they tend to leave the place, but only for a while. San Rafael has always been their choice of location to retire or settle in when they got tired of the exuberance of the city.I was one among them, never staying but always coming back. After scanning the town, hoping to find Raven but failing on
(Cole’s POV)“I’m lost,” Aarush creased his forehead, knowing he was missing something important. “Care to explain? Human here! Present!” he waved his hands to Lucilla and me.Lucilla sneered at him. “I thought you’re a genius, and you know a lot of stuff about us?”Aarush pursed his lips and nodded. “I did until I met you two,” he said, blinking at her.“I’m sleeping,” I turned my back on them, not waiting for their answer and ignoring Lucilla when she called me. Even from the staircase, I could hear Aarush bothering her to explain what I meant, but she was too mad at me that she didn’t want to talk with him.Like me, she left the home bar, ignoring Aarush. I care less if she tells our parents about it or reports me to the council. I knew Lucilla was happy but afraid for me, but she should know that this was something I had no control over unless something happened to Brielle. As if I would let something terrible happen to her because beginning last night, I, Nicholas Kirkwood, had v
(Cole’s POV)Brielle almost didn’t leave my side, watching me cook the omelet but studying our every movement inconspicuously. Yet this was something we had mastered for years, and living with Kione, Ichiro, Aarush, and Xian helped a lot because, with humans around, there was always a need to stock the kitchen with food.“Mmm…” moaned Xian as she entered the kitchen. “Aarush, I need coffee -” The petite woman, still in her lab coat, stopped as she saw Brielle. She placed her car key in the cupboard and opened the fridge, getting bottled water.“Hi,” greeted Brielle, wanting to break the silence between them, maybe as women.“Coffee?” Aarush asked, giving me the plates from the cupboard and getting her a cup.She half-smiled at her but returned her attention to me. “If the company’s not giving me enough funds for my research, I’m resigning, Cole.” She started the conversation as she took the plates from me. “What’re the plates for? Who is she?” she asked in an unfriendly tone. She took
(Brielle’s POV)“You kissed me first, remember?” Gen repeated Cole’s question, laughing hard when we returned to Grandma’s house. She and Bryce told everything they had seen inside, and it didn’t surprise me when she played a video recording of their short tour in the living room.Giles glanced and scoffed at me. “You kissed him?” he asked, but his eyes were now focused on the dagger he was sharpening after not finding anything unusual from the video.“You told me to distract him,” I said, leaning on the couch and fixing my eyes on Cole’s gorgeous face on the screen as Gen replayed the video. “It’s my only way to stop him.”After seeing us last night, Giles suspected his connection to Raven, and this morning, he woke us up, plotting a scheme that I continue my act as someone who was too interested in him. He didn’t trust that I could do the task alone, so he asked Bryce and Gen to accompany me and pretend we were jogging and seeing their place. If Giles didn’t ask me to see Cole this
(Brielle’s POV)“Brielle, just tell me if you want to cover your whole body with it because hand wraps wouldn’t be enough,” Gen teased and looked briefly at me, one corner of her mouth lifted as she continued to wrap her hands with a boxing bandage. They discovered the basement training area this morning and wanted to kill time while waiting for nighttime. Still, no one wanted to be my boxing opponent; all four had excuses of wanting to mind their time training alone.Maybe the boys, even Gen, are afraid to fight with me because if I beat them, it will be difficult to accept that their ‘princess’ is as strong as any of the hunters in the group. Winning against the men would be hellish to accept, so they all had their excuses.Wrapping my hand with the elastic wrap, I was quiet and looked furious as my lips pursed, not looking at anyone. I let Gen think I was upset because the guys were ignoring me, but partly I was angry with my conversation with Grandma. She sounded like she favored
(Brielle’s POV) “Brielle,” Cole whispered my name, his hands grabbing my shoulders, but I continued to kneel before him. I swallowed hard because I had never done this in my life, but this would buy me time to come up with a way to stop his magical hands from undressing me, and I had to think fast about how to escape from his room. “Umm… Brielle,” he said, not sounding nervous, but his tone was something else I could not comprehend. I craned my neck to look at him, seeing him shaking his head at me like stopping me. Before I could tease him that he was being a coward, the door opened wide, and Cole had to place his hand on my head, tapping lightly to bend my head down. “Gosh, Cole!” growled Xian, entering the bedroom without bothering to knock. “I’ve been loo-” she stopped. Even without seeing her face, I knew her eyes were pinned on me. My hands groped the floor, pretending to look for something. “She lost her earring,” Cole said. She scoffed. “Last time, she lost her hairpin,
(Brielle’s POV)Like the way Cole held my hands, he rose to his feet in a hurry, leaving me on top of the dead vampire that attacked us and walking away. I was panting and shivering as my eyes followed his direction, and then I realized he was not running away but only hiding among the trees.“Are you okay?” Gen asked, still panting after running in my direction and helping me get up when she reached me.My legs wobbled, but I knew it wasn’t because of the surprise attack but at how I killed the vampire. No… It was not me who killed the creature, but Cole, using my dagger while holding my hands to strike it to death as if teaching me how to kill it.Giles knelt, checking on the dead creature and taking the dagger from its chest to return the weapon to me.Bryce clucked his tongue as he looked at me. “So unfortunate of him to have you as his meal tonight, huh?” he chuckled, bending his one knee to pick up the plastic container I was holding a while ago. “Looks like Barbie here did not
(Brielle’s POV)I wasn’t okay! Those were the words I wanted to scream at everyone in the room. I could hear Gen asking Aarush if we could have a copy of the files, and though he looked in doubt when Lucilla returned to the room, she only nodded.“Give them what they want,” I heard her say as she walked toward the cabinet, pulling a drawer and getting a flash drive. She looked nervous as she glanced at me before giving the small device to Aarush, then walking to the far end of the room.“Which file do you need?” He asked us, moving the mouse and looking at Gen.She moved closer and leaned her body, enticing him with her low-cut blouse while pointing her index finger from the first video we watched until the following few files, but Aarush seemed not bothered about it.He focused on copying the files to the flash drive, and when he was done, he smiled, ensuring to focus on her face as he gave the electronic device to her.Gen lifted the corners of her mouth, hiding her disappointment,
