Chapter 1

Alexis' POV

"I'm going downstairs for some food, hope I don't wake dad up" I whispered to my friend who was on the other end of the call.

"And we all know he's a light sleeper" She chuckled.

I tiptoed across the hallway and down the stairs without a squeak of a noise coming from the wooden floor that would normally set off whenever I try to get a late-night snack.

"Brit, I think I'm getting good at this" I smiled proudly to myself as I whisper yelled to her "Well it would've been a matter of time seeing as you do this Every Night." She said emphasizing every night

"Well, it's not my fault my stomach keeps crying for more food" I could almost hear her eyes rolling through the phone. "I heard that," I said "What- heard what! I didn't do anything" She laughed.

"You know, I should be grateful that I live in such a house but man my little legs are taking too long to reach the kitchen," I grumbled. Upon nearing the kitchen, I saw a light illuminating from within. Knowing exactly who it was a bit of a mischievous spark ran through me as I crept up on the boy rummaging through the fridge.

"Go to bed," I said loudly enough not to wake dad. The boy jumped from the fridge with the big bottle of orange juice to his lips. I kicked him on the leg and whisper yelled. "How many times do I have to tell you not to drink from the bottle Alex?"

"Is Alex awake too?" I hear Brit asked

"Yeah, drinking from the bottle with his dirty ass lips"

"That's gross Alex!" Brit yelled to Alex deafening me in the process "It's just too much work to go get a glass from the cupboard when I can easily just drink from the bottle"

I was about to curse him out when suddenly I heard a noise echoing throughout the night. "Did you hear that?" I asked looking at Alex with wide eyes "Looks like someone is about to get gro-" I hung up the call before she could victoriously finish her sentence

"Shit, look what you did, you woke dad up," Alex says hurrying and placing the bottle back in the fridge

"How is-" I was cut off when I heard a loud bang from the sliding door that led to the backyard. "What the- "but before I could finish my sentence another loud bang came, but this time the loud bang sounded as if the glass door was broken, and that was exactly what happened.

Glass spread across the floor and a shadowy figure stood at the doorway, but the weird thing about this shadow was that it wasn't very human at all. A dog maybe?

"Alex is that a dog?" I asked my voice shaking evidently

"Looks like it from the shadow, I'll go look, stay here."

"Stop acting like some brave dude, you're not superman so let's get your 10-year-old self-upstairs before we get dog bitten," I say trying to get my feet working again.

"Why did it break the glass door? that's not even the question here, how did it break the door that's what I should be asking and why isn't it moving?" Alex asked mumbling to himself moving towards the door.

"Alex, could you please tell me why are we moving towards the noise? I'm only 10 years old I haven't started living my life yet!"

"Well, I did tell you to stay, didn't I? I just want to know why and how it broke the glass that's all, maybe it's hurt"

Right as Alex said that growling imitated the air and the shadow started to move with each step it took, I heard its paw along the wooden floor, and my heartbeat quickened. "Alex It's now verified that it's a dog let's just lea-" Before I could utter another word the thing turned the corner and pounced on Alex knocking him down.

My survival instincts kicked in and my feet started heading for the stairs, as a matter of fact, why isn't dad awake with all that glass breaking? Suddenly my brain became fogged, and another instinct kicked in, my feet stopped in their tracks. I shakingly looked at my brother surprisingly seeing he had the neck of that thing in his hand.

"Dad!" I yelled so loud I'm sure the neighbors a block from here can hear me.

"Daaad!" I yelled again sobs now clouding my screams.

"Lex RUN!" I hear Alex shout. My eyes widened at the huge dog coming directly toward me. I don't know if you can tell how animals are feeling, but the expression on that thing's face was as if it was angry, why was it angry? I shook my head trying to wonder my curious mind somewhere else, but to note, it went blank again for some reason. I tried to run but my feet betrayed me and stood firmly on the wooden floor.

"Alexis get out of the way" Alex cried out, tears streamed from his eyes and the pain that echoed throughout the air seemed to have triggered something in me. My legs started to feel like I had legs again and that's when I ran for the stairs. Suddenly my dad appeared at the top of the stairs, eyes wide open.

"Pumpkin!" He leaped from the top of the stairs in one go and was at my side in seconds. My thoughts swirled around at what just happened, but I thought maybe the effects of being too scared made me start seeing things. My dad kicked the thing square on in the face and it flew across the room and started whimpering rubbing its paws across the area.

"Alex take pumpkin upstairs and LOCK the doors!" Immediately as dad said so the thing jumped from where it was and stood in front of me and extended its paws to grab onto me or maybe kill me. Its claws tore my sleeve and dug across my wrist. I cried out in pain and my dad grabbed the thing by its tail and flung it at the opposite side of the room into the wall leaving a crack from where it hit. Alex ran towards it aiming a gun at it, shooting three bullets but I can assure you those bullets weren't ordinary, it looked as if they released electricity, my dad quickly rushed over as well making sure that it was indeed dead. Timely, my vision started to get blurry and my breathing became slower.

"Da-" I fell to the floor hitting the back of my head in the process I had no strength to even cry out from the impact. I looked at my injury seeing it lying in a pool of blood. Can a wound like this pool out so much blood?

I heard muffled voices calling my name and I tried to adjust my blurry vision to the two bodies running toward me. I was suddenly lifted from the ground and could no longer keep my eyes open, so I just gave up and let darkness engulf me.
