Chapter 2

Author: Crystal K
Saturday morning, my father came to my room.

I thought he was going to give me the $320 for my vials.

But he spoke like he was interrogating an intruder.

"$3,600. Where did you transfer the money?"

I sat up, holding my burning forehead. "What money? I don't even have the payment password for the accounts."

"Who else could it be but you?" My father sneered, his eyes full of disgust. "Jace and Chloe have bright futures. They wouldn't do this. Only you, who contributes nothing to the Pack, are always begging for money!"

Every word was like a blade dipped in ice water, piercing right through my chest.

My fever made it hurt just to breathe, but I didn't back down.

"I only asked you for $320 yesterday, and you said no." I stared into his eyes. "There are cameras all over the main building, Father. Go check the footage, or track where the money actually went!"

But he leaned down with a smile and condemned me word by word: "Jace said you bought a bunch of useless scrap using his secondary card account to get back at the family, and you even put the shipping address as the black market! Did you think I wouldn't know you erased the evidence? You took it. Just admit it. Freya, you disappoint me so much."

He left in a rage.

At noon, my mother Valerie clicked over in her heels.

She wouldn't even step over the threshold of the storage room. She just coldly delivered a notice.

"Because of your stunt, you are permanently cut off from the pack accounts, effective immediately." She looked down at me. "We don't need a family member who steals pack funds."

I didn't say a word. I just watched her quietly.

Just then, heavy footsteps came from the end of the hall.

My brother Jace walked over in a brand-new combat uniform.

My eyes fell on his feet.

They were a pair of high-end Shadow Series tactical boots, custom-made for werewolf transformations.

As a potioneer, I compared material prices on the black market and supplier websites every day.

I knew exactly how much those boots cost.

$3,600. Not a penny more, not a penny less.

Jace noticed my gaze and smugly lifted his foot.

"What?" He whistled without a shred of guilt. "You look pretty sick. Stealing money is hard work, huh?"

I turned to look at my mother. She was gently fixing Jace's collar, completely blind to the $3,600 boots on his feet.

That afternoon, a special delivery truck parked outside the main building.

Jace excitedly tore open the package and pulled out a bulletproof tactical vest worth $2,400.

My father even stood by, personally showing him how to adjust the buckles.

This was the "frugality" my father talked about.

"Every penny must be spent wisely" was nothing but a curse used exclusively to exploit me.

At 3 PM, I swallowed two fever reducers and dragged my weak body onto the bus heading to the market.

It was my mother's absolute order. I had to go with Chloe, who was scared of heights and strangers, to pick out jewelry for the Full Moon Festival.

The bus bumped along.

Chloe sat next to me, hugging her expensive handbag.

She turned her head, avoided my eyes, and lowered her voice.

"Freya..." She bit her lower lip, looking pitiful. "Actually... I walked past Father's study yesterday and saw Jace on the tablet. He transferred the money."

My heart had gone numb a long time ago. It didn't even skip a beat.

"Then why didn't you tell Father?" My voice was raspy.

"How could I?" Chloe's eyes welled up with tears, acting like she was the victim. "Father and Mother wouldn't believe me if I told them. And... Jace has special training next week. He really needed those boots. Just don't be mad at him, okay?"

I looked at her delicate, naive, and innocent face.

She knew everything.

She watched me get framed. She watched me get stripped of everything while running a high fever. She even watched me take the blame for stealing.

And then, she turned around and peacefully enjoyed her perfect little life, asking me "not to be mad."

"I'm not mad." I turned my head and looked out the window at the passing streets.

Why would I be mad at a bunch of strangers?

At the market, I dropped Chloe off at the high-end jewelry store.

Through the glass window, I watched her swipe her card for an $800 moonstone necklace without blinking.

I looked down and opened my bank account on my phone.

Balance: $2,200.

This was my blood, sweat, and tears from the past three years. Doing odd jobs at the herb shop, even testing potions on myself, saving up penny by penny.

Originally, this was my room and board for the Royal Academy.

Now, it was my only chip to escape this cage.

The Winterhaven territory in the North was two thousand miles away.

Living expenses were high there, and the conditions were harsh.

My meager savings couldn't even cover the deposit for a nice apartment.

If I stayed, as the eldest daughter of the Crescent Falls Pack, I would at least be fed.

But I knew if I stayed, that word "frugality" would drain my last drop of blood. I would become their stepping stone to show off to others, until I completely withered away in this windowless storage room.

Leaving would be a gamble. But staying was a death sentence.

Six months later, my private Potion Analysis Studio officially opened in the central commercial district of Winterhaven. The floor-to-ceiling windows faced the snow mountains. Priceless precision instruments sat on the desks.I now owned a luxury apartment with an independent lab, and a temperature-controlled greenhouse dedicated to cultivating rare spirit herbs.Every week, those who once acted so superior would send packages.Today was another one.Maya opened the shipping box. Inside were three rare Blood-Moon Orchids and a letter."From your parents again." She handed me the letter. "Fourth time this month."I skimmed the contents.Still the same tearful confessions."Freya, we burned Jace's combat boots and all of Chloe's luxury items. Please forgive our favoritism. The most luxurious master bedroom in the main building is ready for you, just waiting for you to come back..."I tossed the letter straight into the trash."Don't you have any urge to go back and take a look?" "Freya! Get out here!"A violent roar exploded inside the domed hall of Winterhaven Academy. The heavy crystal doors of the hall were brutally shoved open.My father Alaric, leading over a dozen fully armed territory guards, barged in aggressively. The blizzard howled in through the doors behind them. If he hadn't been holding up the Alliance-approved "Bloodline Mandate," the Winterhaven border guards would have torn these southern intruders to shreds long ago. But I knew Silas had deliberately ordered them to be let in.His eyes were blood red. The violent, overwhelming Alpha pressure of the Southern Alliance crashed down on me like a tsunami.Months ago, this pressure would have forced me to my knees instantly, stripping the breath from my lungs. But now, I just stood calmly on the steps. Not a single hair on my head trembled.Silas stood half a step behind me.The powerful spiritual bond of a pureblood Elder was pouring into my soul endlessly through our Mate pull. It was absolute s

Silas stood behind me, his broad chest pressed against my back, his warm breath fanning over my neck.My face instantly burned."Several ancient potion families are watching you." His voice rumbled low in my ear. "Your talent has already surpassed the limits of your age."I turned around, finding myself trapped between his arms and the desk."But." His expression turned serious. "You need to be careful. Your real name and background have been completely exposed."My phone buzzed.A screenshot Maya sent made my blood run cold instantly. The internet didn't just recognize me as the abandoned eldest daughter. The Winterhaven Academy library was buzzing with voices this spring.Everyone was discussing the same topic."Did you see? That 'Alibi' report hit a million reads on the first day!""Goddess, that eldest daughter forgotten in a storage room is literally my life story.""What kind of stupid Pack abuses a genius just to buy combat boots? The whole Alliance is laughing at them now."I sat in the corner, quietly listening to the chatter.Maya rushed to my table, her eyes shining like stars."Freya! Your report blew up! The entire Northern Alliance is sharing it!"The report had been out for three days.Every day brought a new wave of discussion. Those case studies about "newly formed packs sacrificing certain children to concentrate resources" pierced the hearts of countless werewolves with similar experiences like a sharp knife."The Professor is looking for you." "I've been keeping an eye on your reports."After the Snow Banquet ended, a deep, sexy voice sounded behind me.I turned around and saw a tall figure standing at the bottom of the steps.Even in the dim light, the powerful Alpha aura radiating from him made the air feel heavy. It was Silas, the distinguished Potion Professor of Winterhaven Academy. The man on the national judging panel who gave me the only perfect score."Professor." I nodded politely."Your piece on Scent disorders in Alpha offspring has the whole forum talking." He walked up the steps, every movement carrying the ease of an Alpha. "Your perspective combining psychology and pharmacology is very unique."I could feel his sharp eyes evaluating me, like he was stripping away my disguise and looking straight into my soul."Thank you.""I have a proposal." Silas pulled a contract from inside his suit. "Fifty thousand dollars to buy the exclusive publishing rights for your next blockbuster report."My breath stopped for a s

Walking out of Winterhaven Airport, the freezing wind cut like a knife, but every breath felt more freeing than ever before. The first thing I did in Winterhaven was rent a shabby little potion workshop near the academy. The $6,000 prize money gave me confidence. The landlord was a retired veteran Pack guard with a face full of stubble. He looked at my freezing, red hands, then at my academy acceptance letter, and just crossed out the deposit section on the contract."It's not easy for a little girl in the Northern blizzards alone," he handed me the keys, his voice rough but kind. "Just pay the utilities monthly."The room was small, but it had an independent ventilation system and a temperature-controlled potion storage cabinet. Most importantly, it was mine.A yellowed "Advanced Wolfsbane Purification Chart" left by the previous tenant was stuck to the wall. There was a simple twin bed in the corner.I put my suitcase at the foot of the bed and took a deep breath. It smelled like ble
