Anna

“What?!” Stella exclaimed.

I sighed and ran my fingers through my hair. We were sitting under an oak tree, which shielded us from the intensity of the afternoon sun.

I didn’t want to believe it but it was true. I had found my mate, and it wasn’t who I had been expecting to be. It had to be the one person I never thought possible; Damon Smith, my Alpha.

It came as a shock and I could tell he had heard the whispers too. But he didn’t say anything. Instead, he had left with his mother. Maybe he was disappointed in me. I didn’t know how to feel. I thought it would be exciting to finally find your mate, but being the mate to the man who destroyed my pack was the most horrible thing that could happen.

My pack, the Nightcrawlers, had been one of the most prominent packs in the country. We were the most feared, that was why we were usually attacked. But we were always able to defeat them. That was until they showed up.

The Blue Valley pack led by Damon and his men destroyed my pack, killing my father, and taking me and the rest of the survivors hostage. I was only a little girl, but I could still remember everything that happened. And now I realized I was destined to be his mate.

“Does he know about this?” Stella asked.

I shrugged my shoulders.

“I mean, he did turn around when I realized it so I think he does. He’s just finding it hard to believe it like I did.”

“I never thought you’d be the Alpha’s mate,” she confessed. “I mean it doesn’t make any sense.”

I chuckled at that.

“Thanks for the support, Stella.”

She laughed, her voice echoing through our surroundings. The warm afternoon breeze brushed against my cheeks, flipping my hair across my face. I pulled them away and tucked them behind my ears.

Between my fingers was a blade of grass I didn’t stop looking at all afternoon. I was lost in my thoughts, thinking of what I would do about the discovery. Should I tell him, or would he come to me? I didn’t know.

Then, I felt Stella’s arm around my shoulder. I looked up at her and smiled. Her long brown hair was being pulled back by the warm breeze, and I could see her hazel eyes smiling at me.

“Hey. There’s no need to be down,” she said. “Today is your birthday, you’re eighteen, and you know what that means?”

I arched an eyebrow at her. I didn’t understand what she was driving at.

Stella had been my friend ever since I had arrived here. Though it felt like a taboo for us to be friends since she was of the Blue Valley pack, she didn’t discriminate. And that was what I loved about her most.

“What are you talking about?” I asked her.

She grinned at me and pulled out a little metal flask. I arched my brow even higher as I stared at it. I couldn't tell what it was.

“This means you’re legal to drink alcohol,” she said with a sinister grin.

I shook my head as I heard that. There was no way I was going to do that.

“No. No,” I said, moving away from her. “I’m not drinking alcohol.”

Stella laughed.

“What? It’s therapeutic. And you sound like you need some.”

I hated alcohol because of its intoxicating smell. And worst of all, it tastes like battery juice. I loathed it. There were several times I had seen Damon drinking alcohol while cleaning his place, and the smell he reeked of was usually unattractive. The last thing I needed was to smell like liquor when I got home. I would receive a huge scolding.

“Come on, Anna. It’s just a little flask,” Stella pushed.

I shook my head, rising to my feet. Underneath them, I could feel the grass tickling my feet. It felt so nice to be out here. This was better than staying indoors all day.

Stella rose to her feet too and I could tell what she was thinking.

“Stella. No. Don’t you dare!” I said, moving away from her.

She jumped towards me but I pulled away just in time. She rose to her feet and came after me. A few moments later, we found ourselves running around the tree. Stella had the flask out urging me to drink it. But I only had one answer.

“No.”

Thirty minutes later, I handed the flashback to her as my vision became blurry. I could tell that I was intoxicated. Stella had successfully persuaded me into drinking.

“And then he was like, ‘What are you staring at?’ And I was like, you, beautiful.”

Stella laughed at that and reached for the flask. She tried to hold onto it, but I pulled it out of her grasp and brought it towards my mouth. I tried to drain it but found out that it was empty.

My lips twisted into a frown and threw it over to Stella. She was startled when she felt the flask drop on her stomach. I stretched out and leaned back on the bark of the tree, watching the sunset.

It looked so beautiful. The clouds were golden which was a reflection of the sun’s golden light.

Wait. The sunset. That meant...

I jumped to my feet immediately with startled Stella. She looked up at me in confusion.

“What is it, Anna?”

I looked at her.

“It’s sunset. I’m supposed to be home before now.”

“What?” She shrieked getting up on her feet.

“I have to go, Stella. Thank you for today,” I said.

“Wait…” she tried to say.

But I darted off before she could complete her sentence.

RohanFive years ago. I was running as fast as I could. But it seemed I was so slow. The pack house was under attack. The last line of defence had been broken. I knew that Jarred wouldn’t call me unless it was an emergency, and this was sooner than I hoped it would be. How long had we been at it? An hour? Maybe two or three? I couldn’t tell. All I needed to do was make it to the pack house. And I hoped that I wouldn’t be too late. Late. That was all I’ve been tonight. First, it was alerting the pack about the attack, and then it was Walton. My heart ached as I thought about him. How could I have been so stupid? The only reason he was dead was that I’d forced him to go after the vampires. I’d taken the fear from him and that had led to his death. This was all my fault. He’d died a painful death, and I feared that I wouldn’t be able to recover from it. As I got back into the pack, I could see the path being littered with vampires. They’d done a good job holding them back. The road

DamonThey were coming. But we were prepared. I could see them now—the vicious creatures coming at top speed, their screeching sounds filling the air. My hand tightened around the handle of the silver blade. This was going to be one hell of a fight. All around us, the people of the Black Fang roared in preparation. They were all ready for this. Everybody was ready except for one person—Rohan. It was amusing that he was about to chicken out on us. And he was the only person who had experience fighting vampires in large numbers like this. But now that we needed him the most, he was just a shell of himself. “On my word, we attack!” Dayton yelled at everybody. I gritted my teeth and tightened my grip on the blade again. I could feel my blood boiling. I was thirsty for a battle like this. A few months ago, I never knew that vampires were real. I’d lived my life totally oblivious to their existence. Until that morning at the cafe with my father. He’s opened my eyes to the reality of the

Anna“Good to see you back on your feet,” Rebekah said as she stood by the door. I was almost startled by that because nobody had seen her come in. It was evening, and Stella had fully recovered. It was time to go back home and get some rest. And nobody deserved it better than her.Stella chuckled as she rose from the bed. I was helping her, making sure that she was able to work. She’d been in bed all day which meant that her first few steps would be rocky. “Thank you, Rebekah,” she said softly. “I wouldn’t have been here without you.”Rebekah folded her arms as she leaned against the doorframe. “You seem to forget that’s my job, Stella.”Stella nodded with a smile on her face. “Yeah. It’s one hell of a job.”Stella moved, her hands slowly leaving the bed. Her legs touched the ground and she leaned off the bed gently. I watched her tentatively with her hand wrapped around my shoulder. Stella took a deep breath before standing on her feet. She chuckled in amazement and looked up at

RohanFive years ago. The air was tense, filled with the clink of swords, the metallic tang of blood, and the screams of my men as they clashed against the vampires. There was a fog that concealed half of the battlefield. It was our job to hold down the line. They must not get through. Not by any means.A vampire lunged at me faster than I could process. It brought me down to the ground and snapped its fangs at me. I moved my head away before it could take it off. And then I reached for my blade at my side and grabbed, swinging it at the vampire. Its head slid off and it dropped dead to my side. I got back to my feet immediately, making sure that it didn't repeat itself. I was Alpha. It was my job to protect this pack. And the only way I could do that was to protect myself. I couldn’t die on my people when they needed me most. “Alpha!” I heard a familiar voice scream through the field. I stared in the direction that the scream came from and it was the dirt blonde boy from earlier b

RohanPresent day. “Rohan! Rohan!” I could hear Damon’s voice calling me from the fog. I snapped back to reality and found him staring at me with his brows furrowed. “What the hell are you doing? Blacking out at an important time?” He asked, barely hiding the irritation in his voice. I sighed and rubbed my forehead. The memories were coming back faster, and I didn’t want to remember them. But if this was what was happening, then I had to make sure that I did better than last time. At the distance, Dayton was talking down the vampire while the whole pack watched. He tore off its neck from the body before smashing it to pieces with his foot. That was grotesque. But I could see the rage in his eyes. He was fuming at the vampires which meant that he could handle the rest here. “Are there any more?” He asked the crowd that was gathered but nobody responded. He walked up to us afterwards, his hands stained with blood. “What do we do now?” He asked. “You have to prepare your pack fo

RohanFive years ago. “Alpha! Thank goodness,” Eric said as I stepped out of the truck. It was twilight and I could smell the tension in the air. We were running out of time. They would soon be here. I could feel it—the strange shift in the air. We didn’t have much long left now. “What’s going on?” I asked and looked around. The men were gathered but they all looked scared. This pissed me off. “Why are you all looking like you’ve seen a ghost?”There was no answer. They all stared at me in silence, scared out of their minds. This irked me. At this rate, we wouldn’t be able to hold them back for long. “Well? Someone better answer me!” I demanded. “W—We didn’t know that vampires were real,” one of the men said. He was a boy of about nineteen with short dirt blonde hair. His blue eyes were lit in fright and his knees trembled as he held onto his blade. I bit my lips staring at him. He would be the first to die. “Well. Now you know that they are,” I said. “Now stop acting like wimps
