The Freedom to Love
The Freedom to Love
Rainy Bell

Chapter 1

Rainy Bell
My dad, Leroy Graham, stared as I, Sylvia Graham, engraved Delia Graham's name inside the crown. He stood there in stunned silence.

"Sylvia." The corners of his mouth lifted like he had just found an entire gold mine.

"Do you even know what you're doing?" He asked.

"Of course." I turned the crown so he could see it clearly.

All these years, he had always favored my stepsister, Delia. She got the first pick of every hunt, the finest silks, and even the most expensive combat tutors.

The money and love she received were a thousand times more than mine.

Now that I stepped aside, he probably couldn't wait to throw her into Lucian Kramer's bed.

"Delia is gentle, quiet, and well-mannered. She's far more suitable to stand beside Lucian," he said before clearing his throat as if trying to sound like a proper father. "As for your mate, I will arrange someone else for you–"

"Don't dress up the mistress' daughter with pretty words," I cut him off.

"She's only a year younger than me. While Mom was still sick, you were already sleeping with her mom, weren't you?

"I don't need a cheating father to choose a mate for me."

My dad avoided my gaze, just like he always did when I hit a nerve, and quickly changed the subject. "That's enough. Since you're willing to give up the position of Luna Queen, I'll have the marking ceremony rearranged immediately. Delia will need a more fitting dress."

"Wait," I said.

He stopped abruptly and frowned.

"I never said I'd give it up for free.

"My mother's belongings in Graham Pack all go to me. Her jewelry, her trunks, her old letters, and the moonstone necklace around Delia's neck.

"I want all of it."

I paused and added, "And 50 million on top of all that."

"Sylvia, don't push your luck."

"Push my luck?" I stared at him. "A crown. An Alpha King. A chance for you to hold your head high across the northern territory. Isn't that worth the price?"

He looked at me for a few seconds before finally giving in.

"The money will be transferred tonight. As for the necklace–"

He hesitated before speaking awkwardly. "I'll have Delia take it off and give it to you."

He left with the crown. He walked so fast it was like he was afraid I might change my mind.

After the door shut, the room finally fell silent.

I quickly booked myself a flight. I then caught sight of myself in the mirror.

The white dress clung tightly to my body.

My waist was cinched, and my back was forced straight. It was as if wearing it meant I would naturally become someone the royal family could approve of.

But I had already tried that once in the past life.

I had ground myself down to nothing and still gained nothing in return.

I let out a long howl as my bones stretched beneath my skin.

My shoulder blades tore through the fabric. My waist tightened to its limit. White fur burst through inch by inch.

The gown, that symbol of restraint, finally gave way and ripped into pieces.

The night breeze brushed against my fur, and for the first time, I felt alive again.

I had snow-white fur, strong limbs, and fangs and claws that could tear flesh apart.

These were the things I should have been proud of all along.

Even if I wanted to dye my fur red tomorrow, no one had the right to stop me.

Because this was my body.

It was mine alone.

No one would ever force it into a cage of gold thread and rules again.

I sprinted out of Graham Pack and headed straight for the busiest bar in the neutral zone.

The pounding bass slammed against the door. The air was thick with alcohol and perfume.

When I leaped in through the back door, the bar owner happened to look up.

All he saw was a snow-white wolf landing under the moonlight before shifting back into human form the next second.

I grabbed a dark red velvet curtain from the window, tore it apart, and wrapped it loosely around my body. I left only my shoulders and one leg exposed.

The bar owner's face turned pale.

"Oh my Moon Goddess! Is that you, Miss Sylvia?" His voice trembled. "Everyone in the northern territory knows you're getting marked by the Alpha King tomorrow. Why would you come here? Lucian hates bars, nightlife, and–"

"And joy." I finished the sentence for him while tying the fabric around my waist. "I know."

He took two nervous steps forward. "If the royal family finds out, I'm finished."

"Relax." I borrowed lipstick from the counter and slowly twisted it open before applying it on my lips. "From now on, I'm just a regular customer."

He blinked in confusion. "What do you mean?"

"I mean–" I pursed my lips and looked at my reflection. I finally looked like myself again. "I don't need Lucian anymore."

From the corner of my eye, I noticed a werewolf near the stage tuning his bass.

He had black hair and two small rings on his earlobe. The tendons on the back of his hand tightened as he plucked the strings.

I beckoned him over with my finger.

He hesitated before walking over with his bass.

"What's your name?" I asked.

"Larry Everton."

"Larry Everton." I repeated it before sliding my hand over his fingers. I traced along the back of his hand until I reached his wrist. "You have nice hands."

His ears turned red instantly.

I smiled and tapped his sexy lips gently. "When you go on stage later, make sure you look at me while you play."

The music hadn't even started.

I suddenly heard a familiar, annoying voice behind me.

It was cold and deep. There was irrepressible rage in it.

"Sylvia, who did you just touch?"

My entire body went stiff.

What an annoying guy.

A year later, the wind along the southern territory's coast was still as strong as ever.Only now, I was no longer living in a rented cabin.I owned a diving and gliding club by the cliffs. I named it White Moon Drift. The sign showed a white wolf leaping off the moon's surface with a trail of blue wind behind it.I liked it because drifting off course wasn't a mistake. Some people spent their whole lives flying routes others drew for them and never once saw what they truly wanted.I only started living authentically after I veered off course.News from the northern territory came occasionally.Graham Pack had fallen from grace. My dad was too busy salvaging what remained to pretend to be a father anymore. Delia tried to attach herself to other packs, but her exposed schemes followed her like a stain no one could ignore. Everybody knew what she had done, and nobody was willing to accept her pretense as 'the perfect Luna.'As for Lucian, I saw him several times but only in the

The full moon turned the entire southern territory's coastline silver.Alex and I did our final checks at the edge of the cliff. Down below, circles of bonfires had already been lit along the beach. The sounds of drumming, whistles, and laughter rode up on the wind. It felt like the entire ocean was cheering for the night.I had on a sleek black outfit with a light jacket thrown over it. The wind slipped down my collar, but I didn't feel cold at all. That's because I knew the moment I jumped, my entire body would ignite with speed and with moonlight."Are you ready?" Alex asked."Of course.""Then tonight's destination is that fire at the southern end of the beach." He pointed it out. "The loser buys drinks.""You're definitely losing."I stepped off with a smile. The canopy snapped open behind me. Wind surged in from all directions, lifting me clean off the cliff. The sea below shimmered like scaattered silver under the moon. Waves spread in rings, and the bonfires, bars, and

The northern territory's public council session received an uproar as soon as the livestream began.I sat cross-legged on the cabin terrace with a plate of mango slices beside me. I balanced my phone on my knee.On the screen, I could see that the steps outside the Royal Ceremonial Hall were packed.Everyone waited to see how the royal scandal would end.Lucian stepped out from the palace, but he looked different from the Alpha King I knew.He wasn't wearing a royal robe.Instead, he only had on a black shirt with his sleeves rolled up to his elbows. Even the top two buttons of his shirt were left open. There were no elders by his side or attire that signified his status and power. Even his hair had been cut short. He looked like an entirely different person. The first thing he said on the steps was, "Half of the northern territory's royal family rules will be abolished today."There were gasps in the crowd.Lucian was never the kind of werewolf to waste time on nonsense. He

I didn't answer right away.Alex stood beside me. His relaxed demeanor was gone. His whole body was tense. I could almost feel his wolf snarling and ready to tear Lucian apart.Lucian glanced at him once before looking back at me."I'm not here to take you back," he said.I watched him for a moment. I then shook my head gently at Alex."It's okay. You can head back."Alex didn't move."Are you sure?""Yes."Only then did he step back, but he didn't go very far. He stood on the other side of the road.It was the perfect distance. If Lucian tried anything funny, he'd be able to get here in a few steps.Lucian clearly noticed, but he said nothing.I crossed my arms and stood in front of the door."Talk."He was silent for a moment, as if swallowing something heavy. He then handed me the velvet box.I opened it.There wasn't a crown inside.Instead, there was a pair of silver cuffs. It was burned black but still recognizable."I had them melted down," Lucian said softly.

Before sunrise the next day, I followed Alex up the mountain. At the edge of the sea cliffs was a natural stretch of grass. Below it, the ocean churned in deep blue. The wind surged up from behind and snapped the paraglider overhead.Alex bent forward to check my harness. When his knuckles brushed against my waist, he pulled away immediately. He didn't let his touch linger for even a second."Are you nervous?" he asked."A little.""Good," he said with a smile. "That means you still respect it. The real danger isn't the height. It's thinking you can control everything."That made me pause.I thought of Lucian and how he always believed that if everything was arranged properly, I would be safe, proper, and flawless.I recalled how he kept saying 'it's for your own good' and, in the end, locked me in freezing water.Control and love turned out to be very different."Look ahead," Alex said while steadying me. "When I count to three, run forward. Don't look back."I chuckled.

  • The Freedom to Love   Chapter 9

The ocean breeze in the southern territory was different from the northern territory. In the northern territory, the wind cut like knives. It sent chills down to the bones if one stood in it long enough. In the southern territory, the wind was damp and warm. It carried scents of salt, coconut liquor, grilled fish, and unfamiliar flowers. The moment I landed, I felt lighter. It felt like I had finally woken up from a suffocating dream. I finally returned to my own body.I rented a small cabin by the cliffs. There were wild bay trees behind the cabin, and the ocean was right in front. All I needed to do was open the window, and I'd see the glittering blue sea.Seagulls flew overhead by day, while waves crashed against the shore by night. No one knew who I was.No one frowned when I drank a third glass of alcohol, and no one called me out for being dressed inappropriately when I put on shorts. On the first day, I slept until evening. On the second day, I tied my hair up, put on
