“Warnings should be heeded and taken seriously,” Damien was fond of saying.

I should have been cautious and listened to him, but not listening for once and breaking some rules sounded like fun to me. I thought for once I could have fun, be distracted from what was going on around me, and tell myself that everything would be fine, so being chased by vampires was the last thing I expected to happen today. How did I end up in this situation?

I had agreed to go to the game center with Amalia and the boys, but we had lost track of time while having the time of our lives. By the time we realized it, it was 10 p.m. We had been interested in trying new games, which kept us so engrossed that we had forgotten all about the killings, kidnapping, and Damien’s warnings.

“Shoot! I’m dead meat!” I told myself. Damien and Trisha would be looking for me right now. The bus would have left by now, and the next one would arrive around 11 p.m. It would be too late to wait an extra hour and get home
