"Ma!? Hey Ma!? Where are you?"
"Over in the kitchen, sweetheart!" "Why are you hiding out in here?" I dipped my finger into the cake mixture as I sat up onto the kitchen island. "Hey now! Don't eat that," Rosa said as she smacked my hand away. "That's for Pa now. You know that tomorrow is his 60th birthday. I need to make this cake perfect so I need every bit of that batter." I began to laugh as Rosa joined in. "I'm only sampling to make sure it tastes alright." "If you say so. So tell me, how was school today?" "It was fine. Nothing special." "Don't tell me those girls are still picking on you!?" "It's really not that bad, Ma. Cassandra just thinks she's better than everyone else because she's the captain of the team. Everyone below her is just a pawn she thinks she can control. It's my fault anyway for going out with Shawn." "Shawn was such a nice boy. What happened there?" "You know what happened!" I fiddled with my necklace as I spoke, "Shawn just used me to make Cassandra jealous. He never really liked me. I was just too blind to see. He's with Cassandra now anyway. He's just a mate." "What did you just say?" "A mate, like a friend." "Oh yes, how silly of me." "Well, I would love to stay and chat, but I have to head to work at Ceasar's." "Okay. Have a good shift. Make sure he doesn't keep you there too late." "No problem," I said as I slid off the counter, dipping my finger in the batter once more before skipping off. I ran up to my bedroom to grab my uniform and shove it in my knapsack, which I slung over my shoulder. I bounded back down the stairs and out the door to grab my bike. I rode into town to Ceasar's, our local diner. Run and operated by the Ceasar Morano Senior, Junior, and the third a.k.a, my best friend. The diner was a popular hangout for all the cool kids. Technically, I made that list since I was a cheerleader, but I wouldn't conform to their social rules, which made me the easy target to pick on constantly. Ceasar made a way better friend than any of them, which is why I offered to work part time when I found out they were looking for someone to fill a spot during the evening shift. I've always had a hard time sleeping at night. I would lay awake and stare out at the moon as if something was pulling me towards it. It would keep me awake endlessly till sleep finally took over. But I would just lay there for hours. I figured why not work instead and keep busy. So, getting this position was a blessing also. "Sawyer! Where have you been! Can't you see almost half the school is here right now. Come on!" Ceasar shouted from the kitchen as I passed through the hallway on my way to the girls' washroom to change. I was always on time. He just always got nervous on Friday nights when it seemed like there were too many students to handle. I put my uniform on and stuffed my other outfit into the backpack instead. I headed out of the washroom when I bumped into a guy I've never seen around. "Sorry!" "Watch where you're going next time." I looked at him with shocked eyes as she walked around me. "Jerk," I whispered to myself as I walked in the opposite direction. I couldn't help but look back, though. It seemed like he had heard that comment by the smirk I saw creeping on his face. "Hey Ceasar, there's some new guy here," I said as I placed my bag in the office. "Yeah, I noticed a table of kids we've never seen. I don't think they go to our school. Maybe their passing through or something. Their hot, though. Obviously, I'm talking about the girl, but I mean, those guys are making me second guess my sexuality." Ceasar was pretty good-looking. He had dark brown curly hair, which he kept short. He was average height with a lean build. Those other guys, though. They were super tall and all had a different hairdo. The girl was almost as tall as them, and you could tell they all hit the gym often. "Sure, if you like that kind of look." "What? Tall, dark, and handsome, not on your list?" I blushed. He knew me well and knew I definitely thought they were good-looking, especially the guy I bumped into. "Nope, it isn't. Jerk is definitely not on my list, and that's what they are." "Well, saddle up and make it be on your list because you're serving their table tonight." "Just what I needed, Ceasar. Thanks!" I walked over to their table as the guy I bumped into returned. "Can I take your order?" "Sure!" the tall blonde said. I felt jealous of her looks. She was so beautiful, and here I was in my waitress outfit, working in a diner. "Elizabeth, we have to go," the guy I bumped into said. "Aww, come on, Krewe, we just got here, and the crowd seems so lively," one of the others said. "You guys don't go to school around here? Where are you from?" I blurted out, not knowing where I got the nerve to ask. "No, we're from a few towns over. We're just passing through to a party. Want to come?" the girl asked. "I really like your necklace! Can I see it?" "Sure. I mean about the necklace, not the party. I'm working." I leaned in to show off my pendant to her. "It's so pretty! What does it mean? Have you guys seen this? It's a wolf with a full moon behind it." "Where did you get that!" The guy, who I now knew was named Krewe, asked as he reached for it. I stepped back before he could grab it, "my parents gave it to me. They died when I was young." "LETS GO NOW!" Krewe had demanded suddenly. "So you don't want to order?" They all looked at me with their heads down, "No thanks, it looks like we're going," Elizabeth said. "However, you can reconsider that invite to the party. I'd love for you to come with me." "Max enough! Come on!" I blushed at his invite as they all took off. There was something strange about them. Maybe they were some kind of sports team. I watched as they left and got into two separate jeeps. Krewe drove one and stared at me from behind the wheel. "Did you scare our guests away? I would have loved to get that girls number." "I have a feeling we will be seeing them again soon."I spent the day packing. I never got to ask how I would explain things to my friends. Would I just disappear to never be seen again? I would have to finalize everything and get our stories straight. Ma walked in. "I'm so sorry I couldn't protect you more." "Ma, what are you talking about? I think you have done a great job already. I love you guys so much." "I love you too, baby. But you shouldn't be leaving like this. I should be with you. Protecting you." "You are by sending me to live with Leila. I'm 18. I need to grow up. Whether it was from me being a wolf or me going off to college. At least I figured out everything here and not alone, at some random school, with random people." "I'm sorry I kept this from you." "Don't. It's alright." "It's who you are, though. I didn't allow you to be your true self. I suppressed your wolf, I hid you away." "It's alright. I'm coming to terms with this new world. I honestly thought I was a freak. Now I feel like I actually fit
I watched as she left. I couldn't stop her, even though everything in me wanted to. I wouldn't allow myself to. She needed to find out and know the truth. As long as Max and Liz didn't know, she would be safe. "Why did you let her leave!" Max yelled at me. "I had to. I can't keep her from finding out." "Who will protect her as you say? What happened? Why can't you tell us?" "If you knew and my father found out, Sawyer and her family would be in grave danger. Do you understand!? Or are you just too dumb to realize the consequences of an Alpha command?" "So instead, we have to stand around and do shit all to protect her?!" "Yes!" "I can't do that! If you won't fight for your mate, then I will!" "Max, stop!" "Why!?" "We have to let her go. She has to find out. She needs to know who she is. This is a lot on her already. My father isn't the man you think he is. I will take over the pack, and I will protect Sawyer while making everything right again." "So what? We los
They all just stared at me. I felt uncomfortable. "Can someone say something?" "Sorry. Sawyer, I just haven't figured out what we should do. I just know I have to keep you safe," Krewe said as he came to kneel beside me and take my hand. "Safe from what?" I felt so confused. What happened? Why was I being kept away from what I was? What did Krewe know? "I can't tell you. Not yet." "So what do I do?" "I'm not sure." "This isn't fair! This is all so new to me. I want answers, I want to know why I've been kept a secret all these years. I don't get it, and if you won't tell me, then I guess I will go home and ask my aunt and uncle." I got up and stormed upstairs to grab my belongings. I didn't want to be here anymore. I didn't want to feel this pain anymore. I felt betrayed as everyone had this deep secret about me, and I was being left out. It was my life. I should have a say. I went back downstairs and headed for the door. I could hear them all whispering. "Sawyer, pl
I felt like I had the best sleep of my entire life. I felt warm and rested until I felt a hard body pressed up against me. I stretched and turned and saw Krewe sleeping behind me. I remember laying down with him, but when did he get naked? I quickly checked to make sure I wasn't naked, but no, thankfully, I still had my clothes on. I lifted the blanket and crawled out of the bed, and grabbed the blanket on the end of the bed to drap over him. As soon I had it on top of him, he woke. "Good morning." His voice was still deep and raspy from sleep. "You do realize you're naked?" "I am? Oh yea, I went for a run last night." He said it so casually like it shouldn't matter. I've never been with a naked man. It does matter. I didn't grow up with wolves. This is just awkward. I could feel my cheeks heating up the longer I just stared, dumbfounded. Talk Sawyer, talk. "Well, don't you think you would be more comfortable with some clothes on?" "Oh, shit, yea. I hope I didn't freak y
I could feel the soft rise and fall of her chest as she slept peacefully beside me. I took a look at the time on my watch. It was only 10 PM, I could make it home in time to ask my father more questions and make it back before the morning. "Dad, I need to speak with you. I'm going to run back. Let the night patrol know it's only me running through the pack lands." "I will be in my office. I've got a lot to finish up still. See you soon, son." I closed off the mindlink as I snuck away from the bed and out of the room. Max stood there in the hallway with a glass of water. "What the fuck man?" "This isn't the time to talk. I have to head home quickly." "No! You said I could go for it. You said you didn't mind. You just can't let me have anything, can you? Mr. Alpha has to have everything? Fuck you, man." "That's not it, okay, Max? I will explain everything in the morning." Max shook his head as he went back into his room, "Whatever. I'm done." I felt bad, but I knew I
Krewe had set me up in a room for the night next to his. He provided me with a t-shirt of his to sleep in, and Liz gave me a bunch of options for the next day. My aunt and uncle believed my story, and I was happy to stay. Krewe and I had kept our distance the rest of the evening, and I had made an effort to avoid Max as well. Krewe had asked to keep things under wrap until tomorrow when we would speak with Max and Liz. I agreed to his plan. I slipped into the t-shirt, only keeping my panties on underneath. It was a thinner material in white. So it was a bit risqué. However, no one would see me. Until there was a knock at my door. I opened the door and peeked out. "Oh, hey, Max! What can I do for you?" He stood there with no shirt on and only his pajama trousers. "Just wanted to make sure you were settling in okay for the night." He looked shy but amazing! He just didn't compare to Krewe the more I let my feelings take over. "I am, thanks! I was just about to lay do
