Chapter 2

作者: Night Wind
"Don't play dead."

Mom's voice came from afar.

"Who are you trying to kid, playing dead each time you do something wrong?"

I opened my eyes and found myself standing by the dining table.

Strange. Didn't I just fall down?

I looked down and saw someone on the ground.

She was wearing an ill-fitting school uniform that had faded from many washings.

She was kneeling on the floor, her head plastered on the floorboard.

Was that… me?

I reached out to touch the person on the ground, but my hand went through the body.

Was I dead?

Even as the thought crossed my mind, I realized I didn't feel very scared.

In fact, I felt a sense of relief.

I no longer had to bear with hunger or walk on eggshells, living under someone's thumb.

Mom was coaxing Hailey.

"Darling, you won't look pretty if your eyes become swollen from crying."

"Helen is naughty. I'll punish her."

"Daddy will be back real soon. I'll ask him to take us out for some fried chicken."

Hailey sobbed as she pointed at me, still kneeling on the ground.

"Why isn't she moving?"

Mom chuckled coldly.

"She's ashamed, of course. She was shameless for stealing your food."

"Let her kneel on the ground. She can get up whenever she realizes her mistake!"

The door opened, and Dad walked in with his briefcase.

"What's happening? I could hear all the crying from the stairwell."

Hailey jumped into Dad's embrace.

"Helen stole my meatball!"

"Mommy hit her, and she's on the floor, refusing to get up!"

Dad furrowed his brows and glanced at me on the floor with a look of frustration in his eyes.

"Is there a need to kick up such a huge fuss over something so trivial?"

He walked over and kicked my calf with the tip of his toe.

"Get up! Stop embarrassing yourself!"

My corpse remained unmoving.

My leg shook from his kick but fell back to its original position.

Dad ran out of patience.

"Trying to be stubborn now, aren't you?"

Mom crossed her arms before her chest and chuckled coldly.

"She's just spoiled. Stealing her sister's meatball is just the start. She'll soon end up stepping all over us."

"Let her kneel on the floor. She can get up when she realizes her mistake."

Dad tugged at his necktie.

"Alright. Continue kneeling, and you can forget about eating dinner tonight."

Hailey's tears stopped at once.

"Daddy, I want fried chicken!"

"I want a whole bucket of it! I want ice cream, too!"

"Sure, whatever you want."

The three of them put on their shoes and headed out.

Bam!

The gate shut tight, and the house became quiet once more, save for the ticking of the clock on the wall.

Tick, tock. Tick, tock.

I floated in mid-air, looking at myself.

I was in a very awkward position, and my neck was bent at an extreme angle.

There was a faint blood stain in the hair at the back of my head.

It was very faint and blocked by my hair, making it impossible to see the blood flowing into the collar.

No wonder they didn't see the wound.

The sky gradually turned dark, and no lights were switched on in the house.

The bowl that Hailey tipped over was still on the dining table. A few drops of the meatball sauce were left on the table, almost drying up.

I crawled over and tried to sniff hard, but I couldn't smell anything.

As it turned out, a dead person didn't even have the right to smell something fragrant.

My stomach had stopped growling, but I still felt hungry.

I wanted some fried chicken, too.

I had never tasted fried chicken before. Each time they went out to eat fried chicken, they would lock me up at home, leaving me two slices of white bread.

Whenever Hailey came back, there would be ketchup clinging onto the corner of her mouth. She would deliberately draw close to me and breathe on my face.

"Helen, the fried chicken was so good. A pity you couldn't try it."

At eleven o'clock, I could hear the door unlocked. They were back.

Hailey was holding onto a red balloon with one hand and a half-finished cupcake in the other.

"Mommy, I'm tired."

"Take a shower before going to bed. You're all oily and greasy."

Mom changed out of her shoes and switched on the lights in the living room.

The sudden flood of lights was piercing to my eyes, and I instinctively covered them with my arms.

I was still in the same position they left me on the ground.

Mom glanced at me, stunned.

"Still kneeling?" She chuckled.

"I really wonder where she got her stubbornness from."

Dad yawned and as he walked past the dining room to the washroom, his pant leg brushing against my shoulder.

I swayed a little but soon regained my balance.

Dad stopped in his tracks and turned back to look at me.

"Helen, that's quite enough."

"You still have school tomorrow. Quickly wash up and go to bed."

When I didn't respond to him, Dad started getting mad.

"Do you not hear what I just said? Have you gone mute?"

It was the first time my sixteen-year-old sister learned to make meatballs. In her first attempt, the meatballs broke apart, and there was minced meat floating everywhere in the pot.In her second attempt, she burned the meat, and the smell lingered in the kitchen for a long time.In her third attempt, she finally managed something decent, although the color of the meatballs looked a little dark.On the day of my death anniversary, she put the meatballs in a box and pushed Mom to the cemetery.Mom had completely lost her mind. She kept asking along the way, "Where are we going?"Hailey kept replying to her, "To send food to Helen."My tombstone faced the sun, and it was a warm spot indeed. It was much better than the windowless store room I had when I was alive.Hailey opened the box of meatballs and placed a few before my tombstone. She had grown up.She looked skinnier and darker, and all the prideful arrogance of her childhood was gone, leaving behind only fatigue."Hel

Hailey pushed Mom to the hospital. After all the years of separation, Dad had been reduced to skin and bones. My urn was placed by the bedside, and our family portrait that was cut into half lay right next to it.Hailey stood at the door, her eyes red-rimmed. "You would rather take care of children you don't know than come back to take care of me.""What right do you have to be the good guy here?"Dad looked at Hailey's roughened hands and said softly, "I was never the good guy.""I didn't go there to redeem myself, either.""I just don't know what else I could do for Helen aside from feeding other children and making sure they're full."Hailey bit her lip hard."But what about me? Am I not your child?"Dad fell silent for a long while."I've let you down, but please don't make yourself a perpetuator just because you hate us."He placed a debit card at the head of the bed."This card is for you. The PIN is Helen's birthday."Tears fell from Hailey's eyes when she heard

  • The Last Offering   Chapter 18

Hailey dropped out of middle school, as the subsistence allowance they received was hardly enough for Mom's medication and diapers.Hailey would wash dishes at a restaurant in the day before going to a hair salon to learn the ropes. All the work left her with only about four to five hours of sleep a day.The restaurant owner would scold her for being slow."You can't even wash the dishes clean. Where did all the food you ate go?"Hailey worked over ten hours each day and could only eat customers' leftovers. One time, she was so hungry that she started having gastric pains. That was when she saw half a chicken drumstick in the trash can.She reached out and was about to grab it when the owner's wife kicked the trash can over."Trying to pick food from the trash? What are you, a dog?"She scolded Hailey in the exact same way Mom used to scold me.Hailey clutched her stomach, her face paling.A short distance away, the owner's wife was coaxing her own son to eat a chicken drumst

From that day on, Dad started recording down how much each child ate.Whenever he noticed someone eating less food or hiding food in their pockets, he would ask them to find out why.He even set some rules in the cafeteria, disallowing people to joke about others regarding food, snatching food from others, or letting a child just look at others' food. One time, the kitchen was serving meatballs. The moment the food was served, the children swarmed over the food, squeezing with and snatching from each other.Dad smacked the ladle hard on the table."Stop snatching!"The children all froze with fear, and the youngest child even started crying.Dad stood stunned. He bent over and distributed the meatballs into their bowls."I'm sorry, I shouldn't have been so fierce.""There's enough for everyone. They're all the same size, so there's no need to fight."Finances were getting tight with the school, and the principal came looking for Dad."Cook less meat this month. Just make

Over the next few years, Hailey was forced to grow up.She would wake up early in the morning every day to prepare breakfast, wipe Mom down, and change her diaper before carrying her bag and going to school. After coming home from school, she also had to do the laundry and clean up the dirty house. Her hands were often soaked in dirty water, making the skin on the back of her hand turn pale and crack. The gunk in her nails could never be washed off.Whenever Mom was eating too slowly, Hailey would throw the spoon into the bowl in anger."Open your mouth!""I need to complete my assignments. Can't you be faster?"Hailey was now the one in charge of the food.Mom didn't dare to argue with her and had to obediently swallow the food she was fed.Being bedbound for so long caused bedsores to grow on Mom's body. Her wounds became deeper and deeper and even gave off a foul odor of rotting skin, and the community doctor ordered her to be hospitalized.Hailey held the hospital bill in

  • The Last Offering   Chapter 15

Mom started dreaming about me every night. In one dream, I was four, washing her feet. The water basin was too heavy, and I spilled water the entire way to her. She complained that I dirtied the floor and punished me by making me kneel down and wiping up all the water stains. In another, I was six and had a perfect score on a test. I raised my test sheet up high, waiting for her to praise me. Instead, she was busy picking out a toy for Hailey and didn't even look up at me."Shouldn't you be getting a perfect score anyway? Don't bother me."She also dreamed of me kneeling in the dining room with blood at the corner of my lips as I kept saying, "Mom, I'm hungry."The more obedient I was in her dreams, the greater the pain and sorrow she felt when she woke up.Gradually, she started losing track of her dreams and reality. When Hailey returned home from school one day, Mom suddenly grabbed her hand."Helen, I'll comb and tie your hair for you."Hailey shook her off."Take a good
