Chapter 3

作者: Night Wind
Dad bent over and grabbed me by the back of my collar.

"Get up!" He pulled me up hard.

He was surprised by how light I was. Raising his arm up high, he almost managed to lift me completely off the ground.

However, I didn't brace myself with my hands on the ground like any living person would.

I didn't struggle because of the pain, either.

My stiff upper body was lifted up by him while my knees remained bent, my head bowed and hanging heavily by its side.

I looked like a ragdoll strung up with a piece of string.

I floated to him and waved my hands profusely.

"Daddy, I'm dead."

"Look closer."

"Please, I'm begging you. Touch my nose."

He couldn't hear me.

Dad furrowed his brows before shaking my shoulders once more.

"Helen?"

I bowed my head, not responding to his call at all.

The table shook, and an empty bowl slid halfway across the table surface.

The anger on Dad's face slowly gave way to doubt and confusion.

"Did she fall and hit herself somewhere?"

The sound of flowing water in the washroom stopped, and Mom's voice sounded from behind the door.

"Where could she have hit herself? I only pushed her gently."

"Then why is she unresponsive?"

"She's putting on an act!" Mom said firmly.

"She was just putting on a "poor me" act when she saw you back home and was waiting for you to stand up for her."

Dad didn't release his hold as he looked down at the dining table.

Half of Hailey's leftover cupcake was still in the box, with some saliva on the edges.

Dad picked up the cupcake and waved it in front of me.

"Helen, wake up."

"Clean up the mess on the floor, and I'll give you this half of the cupcake."

The cupcake was so close to my lips.

The icing on the cupcake had gone cold, and there was a small piece missing from the edge.

When I was alive, I seldom got to eat even Hailey's leftovers.

I instinctively opened my mouth, but I could no longer smell its fragrance.

My body that was on the floor didn't lift up its head.

Dad waited for a few seconds, and Hailey suddenly rushed out of the washroom.

Her hair was still wet, and she was all wrapped up in a towel, but that didn't stop her from snatching the cupcake away.

"That's mine! I won't give it to Helen even if I can't finish it!"

She held the cupcake protectively in her hands and glared at me, still kneeling on the floor.

"She already stole my meatball. Why would I let her have my cupcake?"

Dad said irritably, "There's just half of it left. Didn't you say you didn't want it anymore?"

"I want it now!"

Hailey opened her mouth and gobbled up the cupcake in three bites.

She ate so quickly that some cupcake crumbs fell out of her mouth.

Some of it landed on my shoulder.

Mom walked out of the washroom, wiping her hands dry while pulling Hailey into her arms.

"Alright, now. No one is snatching your food."

"I'll buy you another box tomorrow."

Dad was still staring at me.

"Something is really wrong with her."

With that, he reached out to part the hair on the back of my head.

The hair was stuck together by the blood.

A little bit more, and he would be able to see the wound hidden underneath.

I held my breath, although dead people didn't need to breathe at all.

[Dad, just take a look.]

[Just take a closer look.]

His finger touched my hair.

"Don't touch her!" Mom suddenly yelled, and Dad's hand froze in midair.

"If you help her up, she'll know that playing dead works," Mom said as she looked coldly at me.

"If we were to allow her to play dead over a meatball, will she try to threaten to jump off a building next?"

"If it really hurt, she would be crying."

"She's not crying or kicking up a fuss because she's waiting for us to beg her."

Dad hesitated.

Hailey wrapped her arms around his arm and cried indignantly.

"Daddy, why are you all just looking at Helen?"

The doubt on Dad's face dissipated upon hearing Hailey's cries, and he let go of my collar.

My corpse swayed to one side.

The back of my head peeked out from the corner of the table, but as I was blocked by the back of a chair, I slowly returned to my original kneeling position.

Dad stood up and waved his hand irritably.

"Fine, just let her be."

"Kneel for as long as you want."

He turned his attention to Hailey and started coaxing her.

No one turned back to look at me.

If he had parted my hair just a little bit more…

If Mom hadn't said so much…

If they were willing to give me one more second of attention, away from coaxing Hailey…

Then they would then realize that I was already dead.

But in this family, each time there was a choice to be made, I would never be their choice.

I heard sounds of them washing up and chit-chatting.

Hailey was playing with water in the washroom, Mom was washing Hailey's back while Dad was watching television in his bedroom.

What a heartwarming scene, aside from that corpse kneeling on the ground at the corner of the dining table.

It was the first time my sixteen-year-old sister learned to make meatballs. In her first attempt, the meatballs broke apart, and there was minced meat floating everywhere in the pot.In her second attempt, she burned the meat, and the smell lingered in the kitchen for a long time.In her third attempt, she finally managed something decent, although the color of the meatballs looked a little dark.On the day of my death anniversary, she put the meatballs in a box and pushed Mom to the cemetery.Mom had completely lost her mind. She kept asking along the way, "Where are we going?"Hailey kept replying to her, "To send food to Helen."My tombstone faced the sun, and it was a warm spot indeed. It was much better than the windowless store room I had when I was alive.Hailey opened the box of meatballs and placed a few before my tombstone. She had grown up.She looked skinnier and darker, and all the prideful arrogance of her childhood was gone, leaving behind only fatigue."Hel

Hailey pushed Mom to the hospital. After all the years of separation, Dad had been reduced to skin and bones. My urn was placed by the bedside, and our family portrait that was cut into half lay right next to it.Hailey stood at the door, her eyes red-rimmed. "You would rather take care of children you don't know than come back to take care of me.""What right do you have to be the good guy here?"Dad looked at Hailey's roughened hands and said softly, "I was never the good guy.""I didn't go there to redeem myself, either.""I just don't know what else I could do for Helen aside from feeding other children and making sure they're full."Hailey bit her lip hard."But what about me? Am I not your child?"Dad fell silent for a long while."I've let you down, but please don't make yourself a perpetuator just because you hate us."He placed a debit card at the head of the bed."This card is for you. The PIN is Helen's birthday."Tears fell from Hailey's eyes when she heard

  • The Last Offering   Chapter 18

Hailey dropped out of middle school, as the subsistence allowance they received was hardly enough for Mom's medication and diapers.Hailey would wash dishes at a restaurant in the day before going to a hair salon to learn the ropes. All the work left her with only about four to five hours of sleep a day.The restaurant owner would scold her for being slow."You can't even wash the dishes clean. Where did all the food you ate go?"Hailey worked over ten hours each day and could only eat customers' leftovers. One time, she was so hungry that she started having gastric pains. That was when she saw half a chicken drumstick in the trash can.She reached out and was about to grab it when the owner's wife kicked the trash can over."Trying to pick food from the trash? What are you, a dog?"She scolded Hailey in the exact same way Mom used to scold me.Hailey clutched her stomach, her face paling.A short distance away, the owner's wife was coaxing her own son to eat a chicken drumst

From that day on, Dad started recording down how much each child ate.Whenever he noticed someone eating less food or hiding food in their pockets, he would ask them to find out why.He even set some rules in the cafeteria, disallowing people to joke about others regarding food, snatching food from others, or letting a child just look at others' food. One time, the kitchen was serving meatballs. The moment the food was served, the children swarmed over the food, squeezing with and snatching from each other.Dad smacked the ladle hard on the table."Stop snatching!"The children all froze with fear, and the youngest child even started crying.Dad stood stunned. He bent over and distributed the meatballs into their bowls."I'm sorry, I shouldn't have been so fierce.""There's enough for everyone. They're all the same size, so there's no need to fight."Finances were getting tight with the school, and the principal came looking for Dad."Cook less meat this month. Just make

Over the next few years, Hailey was forced to grow up.She would wake up early in the morning every day to prepare breakfast, wipe Mom down, and change her diaper before carrying her bag and going to school. After coming home from school, she also had to do the laundry and clean up the dirty house. Her hands were often soaked in dirty water, making the skin on the back of her hand turn pale and crack. The gunk in her nails could never be washed off.Whenever Mom was eating too slowly, Hailey would throw the spoon into the bowl in anger."Open your mouth!""I need to complete my assignments. Can't you be faster?"Hailey was now the one in charge of the food.Mom didn't dare to argue with her and had to obediently swallow the food she was fed.Being bedbound for so long caused bedsores to grow on Mom's body. Her wounds became deeper and deeper and even gave off a foul odor of rotting skin, and the community doctor ordered her to be hospitalized.Hailey held the hospital bill in

  • The Last Offering   Chapter 15

Mom started dreaming about me every night. In one dream, I was four, washing her feet. The water basin was too heavy, and I spilled water the entire way to her. She complained that I dirtied the floor and punished me by making me kneel down and wiping up all the water stains. In another, I was six and had a perfect score on a test. I raised my test sheet up high, waiting for her to praise me. Instead, she was busy picking out a toy for Hailey and didn't even look up at me."Shouldn't you be getting a perfect score anyway? Don't bother me."She also dreamed of me kneeling in the dining room with blood at the corner of my lips as I kept saying, "Mom, I'm hungry."The more obedient I was in her dreams, the greater the pain and sorrow she felt when she woke up.Gradually, she started losing track of her dreams and reality. When Hailey returned home from school one day, Mom suddenly grabbed her hand."Helen, I'll comb and tie your hair for you."Hailey shook her off."Take a good
