Chapter 1

The flavor of the meatball was so strong that it started to taste bitter.

I knelt on the chair, my hands gripping the edge of the table as my stomach growled in hunger.

My younger sister, Hailey Smith, pushed away the bowl before her with a frown.

"I don't want it! Meatballs are disgusting!"

The bowl tipped over, and the meatball rolled out.

Mom didn't get mad. Instead, she patiently picked up the meatball and put it back into the bowl.

"These are fresh meatballs that Grandma sent over. They're delicious."

"I don't want any!" Hailey started stomping her foot.

Mom sighed as her gaze shifted to me.

"Helen."

She spooned up the last meatball, the juices dripping off the spoon and landing in Hailey's bowl.

"This meatball smells so good. Helen, do you want some?"

I nodded profusely as saliva filled my mouth.

I hadn't eaten anything proper over the past two days.

Leftover pasta was poured into the trashcan yesterday, because Mom said eating leftovers was bad for health.

But I could eat them. I wasn't scared of that.

"Want some?"

Mom put the meatball, which was still steaming, on my lips, and I could feel the heat on the tip of my nose.

"It smells delicious. Why don't you take a bite?" Mom was coaxing me, but her gaze shifted to Hailey.

Hailey stopped stomping her foot as she started staring at the meatball.

It was hers.

I knew it was hers.

I was very familiar with the process. I should be opening my mouth and pretending to take a bite, and Mom would then move the food away and stuff it into Hailey's mouth.

Hailey would then chew on the food smugly as she made a face at me, and I would watch her finish her food as I swallowed hard.

It should have been the same this time.

I opened my mouth, feeling the meatball on my lips.

It was so fragrant.

So, so fragrant.

Before I realized what I was doing, I had chomped down on the meatball.

I swallowed the entire meatball without even chewing, simply sending it straight down my throat.

The steaming meatball slid down my throat, the heat scalding my chest, but I didn't find it painful.

I simply felt the relief in my stomach after it had been empty for two days.

Hailey was stunned, and so was Mom.

At the next second, her cries pierced through the air.

"Wahh!"

Hailey swept her bowl onto the floor, and it smashed into pieces.

"She ate my meatball! That was mine!"

Mom's face twisted in anger.

Smack!

There was a searing pain on my cheek, and my ears buzzed.

The taste of meat still left in my mouth was now tinged with the taste of blood.

"Are you that hungry?!" She pointed at my nose and yelled.

"That was meant to make your sister eat. Who told you to actually eat it?!

"Spit it out right now!"

She reached out to dig into my mouth, her fingernails scratching my gums.

However, I couldn't spit it out, as the meatball was already in my stomach.

Hailey's cries grew louder as she started rolling on the floor, throwing a tantrum.

"I want to die! Helen stole my food! I want fried chicken!"

Mom's heart broke.

She pulled her finger out of my mouth and turned to hug Hailey.

When she turned around and saw me seated on the chair in a daze, she shoved me hard out of anger that was still boiling in her.

"Go away! I get frustrated just looking at you!"

I was so light that I flew from my chair from the force.

"Bang!"

The back of my head hit the corner of the solid wood table with a dull thud, and the world started turning dark before me—the rage on Mom's face, Hailey's wide-open mouth, and the shards of the broken bowl on the floor.

I slid down weakly, my knees on the floor as my upper body slumped over with my head bowed low.

I looked as though I was kneeling for forgiveness.

Right before I lost consciousness, I was thinking, "That meatball tasted delicious."

  • The Last Offering   Chapter 20

It was the first time my sixteen-year-old sister learned to make meatballs. In her first attempt, the meatballs broke apart, and there was minced meat floating everywhere in the pot.In her second attempt, she burned the meat, and the smell lingered in the kitchen for a long time.In her third attempt, she finally managed something decent, although the color of the meatballs looked a little dark.On the day of my death anniversary, she put the meatballs in a box and pushed Mom to the cemetery.Mom had completely lost her mind. She kept asking along the way, "Where are we going?"Hailey kept replying to her, "To send food to Helen."My tombstone faced the sun, and it was a warm spot indeed. It was much better than the windowless store room I had when I was alive.Hailey opened the box of meatballs and placed a few before my tombstone. She had grown up.She looked skinnier and darker, and all the prideful arrogance of her childhood was gone, leaving behind only fatigue."Hel

  • The Last Offering   Chapter 19

Hailey pushed Mom to the hospital. After all the years of separation, Dad had been reduced to skin and bones. My urn was placed by the bedside, and our family portrait that was cut into half lay right next to it.Hailey stood at the door, her eyes red-rimmed. "You would rather take care of children you don't know than come back to take care of me.""What right do you have to be the good guy here?"Dad looked at Hailey's roughened hands and said softly, "I was never the good guy.""I didn't go there to redeem myself, either.""I just don't know what else I could do for Helen aside from feeding other children and making sure they're full."Hailey bit her lip hard."But what about me? Am I not your child?"Dad fell silent for a long while."I've let you down, but please don't make yourself a perpetuator just because you hate us."He placed a debit card at the head of the bed."This card is for you. The PIN is Helen's birthday."Tears fell from Hailey's eyes when she heard

  • The Last Offering   Chapter 18

Hailey dropped out of middle school, as the subsistence allowance they received was hardly enough for Mom's medication and diapers.Hailey would wash dishes at a restaurant in the day before going to a hair salon to learn the ropes. All the work left her with only about four to five hours of sleep a day.The restaurant owner would scold her for being slow."You can't even wash the dishes clean. Where did all the food you ate go?"Hailey worked over ten hours each day and could only eat customers' leftovers. One time, she was so hungry that she started having gastric pains. That was when she saw half a chicken drumstick in the trash can.She reached out and was about to grab it when the owner's wife kicked the trash can over."Trying to pick food from the trash? What are you, a dog?"She scolded Hailey in the exact same way Mom used to scold me.Hailey clutched her stomach, her face paling.A short distance away, the owner's wife was coaxing her own son to eat a chicken drumst

  • The Last Offering   Chapter 17

From that day on, Dad started recording down how much each child ate.Whenever he noticed someone eating less food or hiding food in their pockets, he would ask them to find out why.He even set some rules in the cafeteria, disallowing people to joke about others regarding food, snatching food from others, or letting a child just look at others' food. One time, the kitchen was serving meatballs. The moment the food was served, the children swarmed over the food, squeezing with and snatching from each other.Dad smacked the ladle hard on the table."Stop snatching!"The children all froze with fear, and the youngest child even started crying.Dad stood stunned. He bent over and distributed the meatballs into their bowls."I'm sorry, I shouldn't have been so fierce.""There's enough for everyone. They're all the same size, so there's no need to fight."Finances were getting tight with the school, and the principal came looking for Dad."Cook less meat this month. Just make

Over the next few years, Hailey was forced to grow up.She would wake up early in the morning every day to prepare breakfast, wipe Mom down, and change her diaper before carrying her bag and going to school. After coming home from school, she also had to do the laundry and clean up the dirty house. Her hands were often soaked in dirty water, making the skin on the back of her hand turn pale and crack. The gunk in her nails could never be washed off.Whenever Mom was eating too slowly, Hailey would throw the spoon into the bowl in anger."Open your mouth!""I need to complete my assignments. Can't you be faster?"Hailey was now the one in charge of the food.Mom didn't dare to argue with her and had to obediently swallow the food she was fed.Being bedbound for so long caused bedsores to grow on Mom's body. Her wounds became deeper and deeper and even gave off a foul odor of rotting skin, and the community doctor ordered her to be hospitalized.Hailey held the hospital bill in

  • The Last Offering   Chapter 15

Mom started dreaming about me every night. In one dream, I was four, washing her feet. The water basin was too heavy, and I spilled water the entire way to her. She complained that I dirtied the floor and punished me by making me kneel down and wiping up all the water stains. In another, I was six and had a perfect score on a test. I raised my test sheet up high, waiting for her to praise me. Instead, she was busy picking out a toy for Hailey and didn't even look up at me."Shouldn't you be getting a perfect score anyway? Don't bother me."She also dreamed of me kneeling in the dining room with blood at the corner of my lips as I kept saying, "Mom, I'm hungry."The more obedient I was in her dreams, the greater the pain and sorrow she felt when she woke up.Gradually, she started losing track of her dreams and reality. When Hailey returned home from school one day, Mom suddenly grabbed her hand."Helen, I'll comb and tie your hair for you."Hailey shook her off."Take a good
