Chapter 8

Claire didn't go home. She went to the one place in the city that had always felt safer than her own apartment — her old office at Whitman & Associates, dark and half-boxed-up now, the desk lamp still working even though almost nothing else on this floor did anymore.

She plugged in the drive with hands that weren't quite steady.

The first folder was exactly what Edmund had promised. Robert Cole's old deals, laid out in clinical, damning detail — companies gutted, pensions raided, a pattern spanning two decades that made her stomach turn. Somewhere in the middle of it, a single scanned obituary: *Marguerite Harcourt, 1974–1997.* No cause of death listed. Claire sat with that for a long time, the ache of it real regardless of anything else that was true or wasn't.

It was the second folder that stopped her cold.

It wasn't labeled for her. It wasn't labeled at all — an unnamed subfolder buried three layers deep, the kind of thing left behind by accident, not intention. She almost didn't open it. She would spend the rest of the night wishing she hadn't.

Inside: wire transfer records. Her father's name on every one of them. And at the top of each transaction, routed through three shell entities before it ever touched her father's accounts, the same originating firm, over and over, going back nine years.

"Harcourt Strategic Partners."

Claire read it four times before the shape of it fully assembled itself in her chest.

Edmund hadn't just mentored her father. He'd been quietly buying up her father's debt for nearly a decade — the same slow, patient method he'd just accused Robert Cole of using to destroy his own family. Restructuring loans that should have failed years earlier. Extending credit no sane lender would extend. Keeping Whitman & Associates on artificial life support, not to save it —

to control exactly when, and how publicly, it would fall.

Her phone buzzed. Marcus.

"Claire, thank God." He sounded wrecked, like he hadn't slept. "I've been going through the old vendor files all night, ever since the story broke, and I found something I should have flagged years ago, I just — I didn't understand what I was looking at until tonight."

"Harcourt Strategic Partners," she said quietly. "You found the loans."

A long silence. "How do you already—"

"I'm looking at the same thing." Her voice was steadier than she felt. "Marcus, why didn't you say anything? You've had access to these files for years."

"Because every time I brought concerns to Edmund, he had an explanation, and it always sounded reasonable, and he's — Claire, he's *Edmund.* You don't question Edmund. Nobody in this building has questioned Edmund in a decade." A ragged breath. "I have a family. I couldn't afford to be wrong about a man like that. I'm sorry. God, I'm so sorry."

She barely heard the apology. She was staring at the transaction dates, aligning them against a memory she hadn't let herself examine too closely until now — the exact month, nine years ago, when her father had first mentioned, offhand, over a dinner she barely remembered, that his oldest financial advisor had recommended a "friend" who could restructure some short-term debt.

Edmund had introduced her father to himself. Under a name that wasn't his own. Nine years before any of this began.

Her phone buzzed again — a new message, this time from the same untraceable number as before, the one that had first told her to ask about the shell company.

**Unknown:** *You found it. I'm sorry it took this long. I couldn't risk him finding out it was me before you had proof he'd believe.*

Claire's hands went cold around the phone.

"Claire:" 'Who is this?'

The reply came instantly, like whoever it was had been waiting, watching, for exactly this moment.

"Unknown:" 'Ask Weston who used to run his father's compliance department. Ask him who it was that first taught Edmund Harcourt how to bury a company so quietly no one notices until it's already dead.'

"Unknown:" 'Ask him about his mother.'

  • The Love I Paid For   Chapter 7: What the Cameras Didn't Catch

Cole Capital's lobby was a wall of flashing lights by the time Claire's cab pulled up — two police cruisers, a knot of security guards, a crowd of employees who should have gone home hours ago now pressed against the glass, filming everything on their phones like the building itself had become the story.Elena found her first, gripping Claire's arm the second she stepped out of the cab, her usual composure cracked wide open."He's upstairs. He's fine — physically, he's fine — but Claire, it doesn't look good. It doesn't look good at all.""What happened?""Edmund Harcourt happened." Elena's jaw was tight. "He showed up twenty minutes after Weston hung up on you. I don't know what was said. By the time I got up there, security was already pulling them apart, and Edmund had a split lip and a very convenient audience of board members who'd been called in for an 'emergency meeting' nobody remembers scheduling."Claire's stomach turned over. "Weston hit him.""Weston says Edmund swung firs

  • The Love I Paid For   Chapter 6: The Truth in Print

The article was already live by the time Claire got home.'EXCLUSIVE: The Hostile Takeover That Wasn't — Sources Reveal Weston Cole Secretly Funded Whitman & Associates for Two Years Before Public Acquisition.'She read it standing in her doorway, coat still on, keys still in her hand, the cold of the hallway pressed against her back like it was the only thing keeping her upright. The details were precise in a way that made her stomach drop before she'd finished the second paragraph. A shell company — Ashford Holdings — quietly wiring capital into her father's failing accounts starting nearly two years before his death. No equity taken. No board seat requested. No public credit sought. Whoever had leaked this had leaked it with receipts: wire transfers, dates, a signature on an incorporation filing that traced back, three shell companies deep, to Weston Cole.He hadn't taken her father's company from her. He'd been the reason it survived long enough for her to fight for it at all.Cla

"You should go," Weston said. Quiet. Final.Vivian didn't move. She set her clutch down on the console table like she was settling in instead of leaving, her eyes tracking slowly over the apartment — the wine glasses, the distance that hadn't quite closed between Weston and Claire, the tension still humming in the air like something recently interrupted."I flew fourteen hours to see you," Vivian said. "The least you owe me is ten minutes.""I don't owe you anything.""You owe me the truth about why you're suddenly engaged to your former acquisition's CFO the same week the Delacroix board starts asking uncomfortable questions about your stability." Vivian's gaze slid to Claire, assessing, not unkind exactly — worse than unkind. Curious. "Does she know that part? That this whole performance started because your board doesn't trust you not to fall apart the way you did the last time someone left you?""Vivian." A warning, low in his throat."I'm not the villain here, Weston. I never was

  • The Love I Paid For   Chapter 4: What He Wouldn't Say

Weston's penthouse was the kind of quiet that came from money — no street noise, no upstairs neighbors, just the low hum of a city that couldn't reach this high. Claire stood at the window with a glass of wine she hadn't touched, watching Manhattan glitter below like something that belonged to someone else."You said tonight," she said, when he finally came in, jacket gone, sleeves rolled, looking like a different man than the one who'd stood in front of cameras that morning. "It's tonight.""I know what I said.""Then talk. Someone out there already knows more about my father's company than I do, Weston. A reporter asked you a question today that you didn't answer, and you didn't answer it because you couldn't because there's a truth under this arrangement you haven't told me."He was quiet long enough that she almost thought he wouldn't answer at all. When he did, his voice had lost the polish it wore in boardrooms."There are things I did before this deal that I'm not ready to expl

  • The Love I Paid For   Chapter 3: The Performance

By eight a.m., Claire had rehearsed the lie so many times in the mirror that it almost sounded like the truth.'We met through mutual business interests. It's been a whirlwind. We didn't want to wait.'Weston's office had been transformed overnight — a photographer's backdrop, a stylist steaming a dress Claire hadn't chosen, a publicist rattling off questions the press were "likely" to ask like she was preparing Claire for a hostage negotiation instead of an engagement announcement."You look terrified," Weston said, appearing at her shoulder while the stylist fussed with her collar. He'd swapped the suit from yesterday for one a shade darker, sharper, camera-ready in a way that made him look like a man who'd been born already knowing how to be watched."I look prepared.""You look like someone about to walk into a boardroom, not a woman who's supposed to be in love." He studied her for a second too long, something calculating and, underneath it, almost gentle. "Relax your shoulders.
