Chapter 14 — A Girls' Date

last update Veröffentlichungsdatum: 27.08.2026 08:15:32

At half past six, I stopped trying to sleep.

The bandage pulled whenever I turned, and I had spent most of the night flat on my back with one hand resting over my stomach. Around me, the house settled in unfamiliar silence. There was no gate radio crackling somewhere down the drive and no pipes knocking when the heating came on at three.

Whenever I closed my eyes, Isaac’s words returned.

When you’re coming back.

I eased myself out of bed and dressed in the soft shirt and trousers Helena had lef

Aurelia's POVThe woman at the front desk found my name on her list, turned the page around so I could check the spelling and pointed to the line beside it.“Trainee intake. Probation.” She reached beneath the counter and handed me a blue lanyard. “Take this one. Green is agency, and if you wear one of those, somebody will have you counting stock for a week before anyone notices.”I signed Aurelia Vane while her eyes moved down the form, passing over the shift-status line with no more interest than they had shown my address.“Any allergies?”I looked up before answering. “No.”“Emergency contact?”I called out the number to her, and she wrote it down before moving on to the next section. That was all. There was no pause over the word beside my shift status, no second look at me and no careful change in tone before somebody found a reason why everything I had said and done suddenly mattered less. She simply treated me like a trainee filling out paperwork, and by the time I stepped away

Aurelia’s POV"Walk me through the last emergency you dealt with," Dr Renn said. "Not from a textbook. One you were actually standing in front of."Three doctors sat behind the table, with an untouched jug of water between them. I'd been in the room eleven minutes."A boy came off a roof at the eastern farms," I said. "He was fourteen and landed on his side. Everyone in the yard kept saying he was awake and talking, as though that meant he was fine, so the first thing I did was get them to stop moving him.""Why?""His pulse was a hundred and thirty and thready, and he'd gone grey around the mouth. Talking doesn't mean much on its own. He wasn't losing blood anywhere I could see, so I assumed he was losing it somewhere I couldn't."Dr Renn wrote something."And you were the only medical person there.""For forty minutes. I kept him still and warm while I monitored his breathing and pulse. When the transport came I told them what his numbers had been at the start and what they were by

Darius's POVThe form in front of me needed my signature beneath a heading I didn't recognise.Quarterly welfare disbursement — Luna's office. Below it were columns of names and figures, with Aurelia's signature on the line above mine.I put it on the pile and took the next one.Mrs Delaney had brought the lot in at nine, set the tray on my desk and left without saying who normally dealt with them. Since then I'd got through four. Two of those I'd had to read twice because I reached the end and couldn't have told anyone what was in them. The border rota I could do in my sleep. Training schedules, patrol pairings, the ridge repairs — I'd been handling those since I was twenty-two. This was something else. There were medicine requests, a dispute about a fence between two families I'd never heard of and somebody's son wanting a transfer to the eastern patrol for reasons that took up a page and a half.I got halfway down the page before I was thinking about her again. She'd walked out of

Two of the shop assistants carried the bags outside, and the driver loaded them into the boot.I sat sideways on the back seat with the door open and both feet still on the pavement. Drawing my legs into the car was going to hurt, and I wanted another minute before it did.Helena signed the delivery receipt for the younger assistant and sent her back inside. Then she walked around the car, entered through the opposite door and sat beside me.She didn’t begin the conversation. She only looked at me.I drew my legs inside, breathing through the pull beneath my bandage, and closed the door.“Vivienne has been like that since the mating ceremony,” I finally said. “She was seventeen. Her mother told her what the family had been forced to take on, and she hasn’t formed another opinion since.”Helena turned in her seat to face me.“And the other lady?”“Rosalie is different. She never says anything you can hold up afterward.”“I heard what she said about the dress.”“Then you heard how she do

I didn’t answer her.Vivienne took another step and looked me over from collar to shoes, the way her mother always did. My coat still held the creases from the suitcase.“Shouldn’t you be at the packhouse?” She spoke loudly enough for the girl on the stool to hear. “It’s Thursday. The border families come to see the Luna on Thursdays, or did you leave somebody else to deal with them?”Every Thursday, the wives of wolves stationed along the boundary came with delayed allowances, requests for medicine and problems nobody else had bothered to answer. For five years, the Vane family had treated that work like something that simply happened, just like the accounts, the funerals and the running of their household. Then they wanted to remind me of my place, and suddenly everything I possessed became a privilege Darius had lent me.I turned slightly, keeping my injured side away from her, and rested my hand against the back of the chair.“Aurelia. I asked you a question.”“You did.”Her mouth

Then I opened the balcony doors and stepped outside. The stone was wet beneath my hands, and the wind coming off the grounds was cold enough to wake me properly.Below, beyond the gravel and the long slope of lawn, the night watch was returning. Two wolves reached the treeline and shifted back into human form. Men waiting nearby threw clothes to them. One of the guards dressed, then sank onto his heels with his head lowered.Every werewolf had that second presence inside them.I never
