Chapter 35: The Border at the Headland

last update 게시일: 2026-10-27 08:46:27

I went along the shore road with the wind in my face and the sea breaking white on the rocks, and I went past the boathouse and up the track to the headland because the Cormorant was beyond the point and the only way to reach her on four legs was over the high ground.

The moon came up behind the cloud and the whole headland went from black to grey and I could see the Cormorant out past the point with her light going and the small boat behind her with the lamp. I could not see the men in the small boat. I could smell them. I could smell Cormac and Padraig and the diesel and the fear.

And then, on the border of the territory where the track came down off the headland to the cove, I smelled something else.

It was a smell I did not know. It was not wolf and it was not the village and it was not the sea. It was oiled metal and cold tobacco and a soap that was not the soap of this coast, and it was coming up the track toward me, and there were two of them.

I stopped on the track and I shifted back and I stood there in the wind with my coat round me and waited, because a wolf who runs from a scent on the border has told the border that she is frightened.

Two men came up out of the cove. They were not from this village. They wore dark jackets and boots that had been oiled and they carried a long case between them and they stopped when they saw me on the track and one of them put his hand up.

"Easy," he said. "We are not here for you."

"You are on pack territory," I said.

"We know what territory we are on." The man came up the track a few more steps. He was somewhere in his forties and he had a broad face and a shaved head and a small scar on his chin and he was looking at me the way a man looks at a dog he is not sure of. "We are here on business and the business is with the co-op and it has been going on for years and it is not your business."

"What business?"

The second man had not spoken. He was younger and thinner and he had the long case on his shoulder and he was looking at me with his head tilted.

"Declan," he said.

"What?"

"Declan," the thin man said again. "The harbormaster. He is out in the Cormorant past the point and he has been out there an hour and the tide is on the turn and the wind is southwest. We were told to come up to the headland and wait for him to come in and if he did not come in by midnight we were to go out and look for him." He shifted the case on his shoulder. "We are not hunters. We are a salvage crew from Galway and we have been paid to be here tonight and we have been paid by the co-op and that is all I am going to say."

The word salvage went through me like cold water.

"Who paid you?"

"The co-op pays us every year," the broad man said. "Every year in the spring and every year in the autumn and the money comes from the hall and the woman with the silver hair signs the paper. We are not here to do anything to the man. We are here to do a job and the job is to be on the headland at midnight and if the harbormaster does not come in we go out and we bring the boat in."

"And if he does come in?"

"Then we go home." The broad man looked at the sea. "We are not hunters, missus. I want to be clear about that. There are men on this coast who hunt wolves and they are paid by other men and we do not work with them and we do not drink with them. We are a salvage crew. We bring boats in."

The thin man was still looking at me. He had put the case down on the grass and he had taken a step closer and his face had gone strange.

"You are not the woman with the silver hair," he said. "And you are not the woman with the red hair. And you are not the woman who was here in the spring."

"What woman who was here in the spring?"

"The woman who hired us in March." He looked at me properly and then he took his cap off. "You have her hair. The gold. And her eyes. You have her exact eyes." He put his cap back on. "I am sorry, missus. I did not mean to stare. But you are the living image of the woman who came to us in Galway in March and paid us to bring a boat down to this coast and to be in the cove on the Thursday night and to take a woman off the rocks and put her in a boat and take her round the point to the deep water."

The wind came off the sea. The light of the Cormorant went round the point and came back.

"Say that again," I said.

"The woman with the gold hair came to us in Galway in March," the thin man said. "She paid us in cash and she told us to be in the cove on the Thursday night and to wait for a signal from the headland. And she said, if the signal comes, there will be a woman on the rocks and she will be wet and she will be hurt and you will take her into the boat and you will take her round the point to the deep water and you will put her onto the boat that is waiting there." He looked at the sea. "And the signal came. And we went in. And there was a woman on the rocks and she was wet and she was hurt and we took her into the boat and we took her round the point."

I stood on the track with the wind and the sea and the whole of it turning over in my head.

"You took her round the point," I said. "Where is she now?"

"We put her onto the boat in the deep water like we were paid to," the thin man said. "And the boat went north. And we went home. And I have not seen her since and I do not know where she is." He looked at me. "But the woman who paid us came back to us in April and she paid us again and she said, if a woman with gold hair comes to this coast asking questions, you are to tell her what I have just told you. And she said, tell her that her sister is alive."

The fish pie was on the counter in the shop and the pot of tea was on the stove and the whole of the village came in through the door.Nora had been up since five and the whole of the shop smelled of pastry and onion and the fire and there was a loaf on the board and a dish of butter and a jug of milk and the whole of it was the first thing that shop had put out since the fire in the back room in June."There is a thing about a fish pie," she said, "that I have been making it for thirty years and that there is not a wolf in this village who has not had a slice of it at a wake or a wedding. And there is a thing about a shop that has been shut since June. It is a shop that is going to have to learn how to be a shop again." She put the pie on the counter. "So I am going to start with the thing I know."The whole of the shop went up.And then the whole of the village came in. It came in through the door and it filled the shop and it spilled out onto the step and into the lane and the whol

The run on the sand ended at the slip and the whole of the pack came up the stones in the gold light and the whole of the village was on the wall. There was a thing that no wolf had thought about and that Arthur said out loud on the pier at seven in the morning."There is a thing about the twenty boats," he said. "They have been in since the full moon and the full moon was on the fourteenth and this is the fifteenth. And there is a thing about a fleet that has been in for a full moon since 1961. It goes out the morning after and there is not a wolf in this village who has been on the water since March."The whole of the pier was quiet.Tom came down the shore road with his coat open and his red face and his grey moustache."There is a thing about the boats," he said. "I have been on the Kathleen since three o'clock and she is fuelled and she is sound and there is not a wolf in this village who is going to be able to say she is not. And there is a thing about a fleet that has been in f

The box was iron and it was about the size of a man's two hands and it had a lock on it and a brass plate on the lid with a name cut into it. Ahern. We put it on the long table in the hall and the whole of the pack was in the hall and the whole of the nine was behind the table and the whole of the co-op was in the gallery.Arthur came down the floor with a ring of keys in his hand."There is a thing about a lock," he said, "that I have been the cooper of this co-op for sixty years and that I have a ring of keys that has every lock in this village on it. And there is a thing about the press behind the frame. It has a lock that a key from this ring opens and it has a second lock that a key from Galway opens and there is not a wolf in this village who has ever seen the second one." He put a key in the lock and turned it and the lid came up. "And there is a thing about a box in a press that has a second lock on it. It has been in this hall since 1901 and there is not a wolf in this villag

The whole of the shore was silent and Mairéad stood at the top of the slip with her hands at her sides. The woman with black hair came up the slip with the nine of the Court behind her and stood in front of her."There is a thing about a wolf who has been in a chair for fourteen years," she said, "that the whole of this shore is going to hear before the guards put a hand on her arm. The Court of Alphas has heard the whole of it and it has made a decision and the decision is not a thing that a court in Dublin is going to be able to set aside. The woman Mairéad has signed a sentence of the headland in the name of a wolf who was not in this village. She has called the hunters and paid them out of the co-op's account and she has put a woman in a boathouse with a rope round her neck. And there is a thing about the whole of it that the court has to say and that no wolf on this shore has said out loud. She did not do it alone and she did not do it because she was a wolf who was born bad. She

The whole of the shore was silent and Kern was standing at the water's edge with his hands at his sides."There is a thing about this morning," the woman with black hair said, "that the whole of this shore is going to hear before the guards put a hand on anybody. The Court of Alphas has been in this village since Friday and it has heard the whole of the file and the whole of the co-op and the whole of the ring and the whole of the healer's book. It has heard the woman Eileen say the whole of it on this slip and it has heard the man Kern put the second file on the stones." She put her hand out. "And there is a thing about the Court of Alphas that the whole of this shore is going to hear now. It is not the Council. It is nine wolves from nine territories and it has the power to set aside a seat and to declare an heir and to banish a wolf from every territory on this island. And there is a thing about a man who has been the Keeper of the Rolls for thirty six years and who has been taking

They brought her down the shore road at first light with a wolf on either side of her and the whole of the village on the sand. She was in a good dark coat and her white hair was pinned up and her hands were at her sides and she walked down the slip the way she had walked into the hall in June and into the court in Galway and into the barracks on the night she said the whole of it.The whole of the pack was on the sand and the whole of the co-op was behind it and the whole of the nine was at the top of the slip with the woman with black hair in front.Eileen stopped at the water's edge."There is a thing about a woman in a good coat," she said, "that I have been since 1961 and that I am not going to be for another hour. I have said the whole of it to a wolf in a cap and a notebook and I have signed it and there is not a judge in Dublin who is going to be able to say I did not.
