Chapter 18. Helena POV

If Lucien knew anything about my messing with him during the night, he didn't let on at all. I noticed him being slightly less flinty than normal as we started another day's trek. As per his instructions, I waited patiently behind a pile of craggy boulders for an hour on the outskirts of a town for him to return with food.

Just as I started to panic that he had abandoned me completely I heard that familiar sound of his heavy boots on gravel. We had walked together so much I knew his footsteps as uniquely as his voice. It was strange to feel my spirits lift at the sound of someone's boots.

Probably because I was so pleased, he hadn’t run off and left me, which made me feel guilty, after all, he had committed to the journey even after knowing he was the one wanted in Silver City. All they wanted from me was my head on a stick.

We feasted once more on rich cheeses, meats, and milk. The strength returning to my body after so long on reduced food made me feel unus
