“Hey, Dad . . .” I began. I guess my tone caught his attention because he frowned.

“What’s up?” he said, leaning onto the desk and turning his body to face in my direction with concerned eyes. I groaned and threw my head back, taking a deep breath. I thought for a second before speaking to him.

“Do you—I don’t know—ever get the feeling like you’ve forgotten something really important?” I asked. He nodded at me, clasping his hands in front of him.

“Plenty of times. Just the other day, I forgot to tell your mother I—” I shook my head at him.

“No, like you shouldn’t be doing what you’re doing even though it makes perfect sense as if you’re supposed to be somewhere else doing something else?” I swung my legs over and sat up, placing a hand on both knees. Dad looked at me for a moment before an understanding look crossed his face. For a moment, I thought he understood me.
