Have Mercy On Me

Nobody could hear her screams, the cries of pain as the blade cut into her. She couldn't see anything, only feel the warm heat of her blood running down her face.

"Don't try to fight it. You'll only make it worse" the pain was overbearing, too much for the little girl to handle. She struggled against the straps that held her in place. She was running out of strength.

"P-please, grandpa, please have mercy on me," she begged, barely conscious. Her mind was fuzzy. She felt like she was spinning. The black sky started to swirl as she finally gave up her fight. She could faintly hear the voices around her.

"I don't need her or my son being a threat to me. It was hard enough to get her father convicted of murder. I don't need her finding out the truth."

"And what if she finds out? What if making her blind doesn't stop her?"

"Then you'll make her mute."

"William, she's just a little girl. Doing all this to her may be more than her body can handle and is unnecessary."

"Shut up. I brought you here to do what I asked, not to comment on my decisions. So if you have a problem with it, you can forget your damn paychecks and get out of here" not much was said after just the strikes of pain she would feel every once in a while. When she finally regained consciousness, everything was black. She couldn't tell where she was or what she was looking for.

"Nicolette," it was her grandfather's voice. The tears streamed down her face, but it was excruciating.

"G-Grandpa, what did you do to me?"

"You don't have to worry about that. Just get used to seeing absolutely nothing, or I'll have to dispose of you."

"It hurts a lot" she could hear him scoff.

"Of course, it's going to hurt! Don't be a big baby, and get over it. She began to touch her face feeling the blindfold that covered her eyes.

"I wouldn't remove that if I were you," it was the voice of the doctor from earlier. She lowered her hands and thought back to the pain she felt lying on that operating table.

"What did my grandfather ask you to do?" she could sense him getting tense.

"He asked me to remove your eyes" she clenched her hands into fists, turning her knuckles white.

"Why?"

"That I can't tell you" she took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down. She had a gut feeling her grandfather did this to either hide the truth about her mother's death or make use of her in some twisted way.

"I'd like a glass of water," she heard the shuffle of feet as the doctor left the room. Despite her terrible headache and weakness in her body, she held onto the IV stand, forcing herself to get up.

"I can't stay here. I can't allow him to have control any further" each step she took was shakey, and her body kept begging her to stop. It was like walking on pins and needles. She struggled to walk as she bumped into chairs and the hospital bed.

"Dammit!" She extended her arm, trying to find the wall.

"You're around here somewhere, I know it" feeling the wall, she walked along till she felt the corner of the door. Sliding open the glass door, she stepped onto the cold hallway tile.

"Body, I need you to stick with me. That man will be back any minute now or, even worse, grandpa," she pushed herself, feeling the wall as she went. She could hear people walking by. The small gust of wind that followed let her know which way they were headed. The clicking sounds of mice and keyboards could be heard growing louder and louder.

"It's so weird being blind" she felt the breeze from the front door and tried to avoid running into people.

"Nurse Samantha, a patient escaped a 12-year-old girl!" Nicolette grew anxious and picked up her pace. Then, she heard the alarm for code green go off.

"Code green lock down the hospital!" Nicolette finally got through the crowd and opened the handicapped door before the lockdown could be finalized. Hearing the wind outside and the birds chirping made her feel at ease.

"Are you ok?" It was the voice of a little boy.

"Umm, no, I'm fine, thank you" she heard his footsteps get louder and louder as he grew closer.

"You don't look fine."

"What's it to you?"

"You can come with me if you like. My house isn't that far away."

"I'm good. I'm trying to get to the prison, but I doubt they'll let me inside."

"Are you a criminal?" The boy asked

"No, but my dad was wrongfully convicted."

"I don't know how to get into the prison, but I can help you get there."

"How old are you?"

"Me!? Oh well, uh, I'm 13," just a year older, she thought to herself.

"I'm 12." She said

"Do I get to know your name?"

"Maybe if I can trust you."

"You can trust me!"

"Not that easily. First, you have to help me get to the prison. You said you could get me there."

"Oh, right! Eheh I kinda forgot" she could hear him ruffle his hair.

"Let's get going."

"Right! Follow me!" The boy took her hand, and they began their trip.

"DAMMIT" Atlas's fist pounded on the glass, leaving some cracks.

"She's my little girl. Who the hell told you you could use her as one of your experiments!" All Atlas could see was red as he glared at his father, William, on the other side of the glass.

"She's my granddaughter, and in my custody, I can use her for whatever I want. Must I remind you I put you in here? I can easily end her life like I did that woman's. Atlas's knuckles were turning white as he tightened his grip on the desk.

"Once I'm out of here, I'm coming for my daughter, and I'm going to kill you," William chuckled.

"You'll be in here for a very long time, and by then, I'll have completed everything I wanted to, and little Nicolette will make the perfect weapon."

"NICOLETTE IS NOT A WEAPON; SHE IS A LITTLE GIRL, MY LITTLE GIRL"

"She was your little girl. Listen, Atlas, as much as I would love to stay and chat, I have to make sure Nicolette is recovering just fine, so we can start working on heightening her senses and sharpening her ability."

"She'll never allow you to control her so easily!"

"And who's going to stop me? A weak and blind 12-year-old girl? Don't make me laugh if she becomes useless. I can either sell her or kill her. I'm not worried" he left the prison before Atlas had the chance to say anything else. Atlas sighed, looking at his handcuffs.

"What the hell can I do when I'm stuck like this? Not to mention those guards are definitely working under him. They'll alert him of my every move, but I can't leave Nicolette in his hands."

"There are tons of guards blocking the entrance to the prison. There usually isn't this many." The boy was worried he took on more then he could handle.

"How many can you count?"

"8 all in different posts" the situation wasn't looking very good.

"We're small, but I have no idea where the door is, and I can't see at all plus, I don't know where my dad is"

"Maybe we could pull off some sort of distraction?"

"Got any bright ideas?"

"Not really.." He admitted.

"Ok, so plan B."

"What's plan B?"

"I have no clue.." at that moment, Nicolette heard her grandfather's voice.

"Crap!" She ducked down behind the barbed wire wall.

"Hey, there's a guy up there. Maybe he can help us."

"No! No way that man will help us trust me on that, and we can't get in there if he's there."

"It looks like he's leaving with a Rolls-Royce."

"You know your cars."

"My dad owns one." He said a bit smugly.

"What are you? Rich?"

"Yeah, actually.."

"Huh.. didn't expect that."

"We need to devise a plan and fast. If my dad knew what we were doing, he'd kill me." He looked around nervously.

"Ok, I'm gonna need you to do the biggest and probably scariest thing you'll ever do."

"Which is?"

"I need you to distract the guards."

"Are you insane!? What if I get caught!?" The boys heart was already pumping faster then it should.

"I haven't exactly thought that far ahead."

"I can't believe I'm agreeing to this!"

"Well, it has to be you. I can't see, and you obviously can." She had a point

"Fine!" The boy got up and walked past the wall onto the prison grounds.

"Hey, guys! What's up" what the hell kinda distraction is that? She thought to herself. The guards turned their heads to look at him.

"Children aren't supposed to be here. Go back to your parents."

"See, guys, that's the thing. I'm like so so lost, I mean like insanely lost" the guards looked at each other, both confused and not really buying his statement.

"If you don't leave now, we're going to take you down to the police station, and they'll deal with you," the boy gulped; the nervousness could be heard in his voice.

"Guys, i-i really need your help right now. I'm just a small little boy with no sense of direction-!" The guard took out a baton, and the boy ran off in a different direction, not towards the wall but further around the prison.

"AHH, SHIT, HELP ME!" Nicolette quickly got up and felt the map they had picked up, listening for any sound of the door. Finally, one person left the prison entrance, and Nicolette snuck in.

"Ok, now what the hell am I supposed to do? Where would they keep my dad or, I guess, a murderer?" She felt around and found a door handle opening it. Someone was mumbling to themselves on the other side of a weird wall as it was very thin. As the voice became clearer, Nicolette scrambled to get inside.

"Daddy!" She heard the chains of the handcuffs as Atlas stood to his feet.

"Nicolette.." she could hear her dad starting to choke up.

"It's me, daddy. Where are you?" Atlas looked around for the guards and saw them further down the hallway outside the glass room. Quietly Atlas opened the door and ran up to his daughter, bringing her into his arms.

"Nicolette.. my dear sweet Nicolette," she felt his tears against her cheek.

"Daddy, don't cry.." she felt his arms tighten around her.

"I'm so sorry. Daddy is so so sorry."

"I know, dad.. it wasn't your fault," he began to sob.

"It is my fault you and your mother shouldn't have suffered."

"I don't blame you, and I'm sure she doesn't blame you either."

"If I knew what your grandfather would do to you, I would've tried even harder to get out of here. I would've fought my way out even if it killed me" she placed her hands on his cheeks.

"Daddy, I'm ok. I'm right here, and ok, i-i don't even feel anything. I'm not in pain" Atlas held her hands against his cheeks.

"I don't care if you're not in pain regardless. I'll make that man pay for what he did to you and your mother, and I'll do everything I can to fix you" tears started to fall down her cheeks.

"You know nothing can fix me, daddy.. even an amazing surgeon can make me see again."

"I-I know... I know, but I don't want to know. I want to try... I want you to feel like your normal self."

"I wanna get you out of here, daddy."

"Then your gonna have to use your special ability.. even tho you've never managed to complete it once, you need to try."

"Last time I tried.."

"I know, princess, but for me, you need to try. Even if you're scared regardless, I'll be right here with you."

"Daddy.."

"Can you do it?" She tried to keep herself from sobbing.

"Ok, daddy.. I'll do it."

"Remember, no matter what happens, I'll be right here," she nodded.

"Daddy.. do you have a wish?"

"I wish to be far away from here somewhere that man will never find us safe and sound together with no fear of being back in prison or within his control" her hands began to glow, and the room began to spin till everything faded into a dark blackness.
