View MoreNo one dared to look back, and everyone’s eyes were fixed on a man speaking at the front. His body was shaking with fear, and he couldn’t even wipe the sweat from his forehead. It was because the most terrifying man he knew in the world was staring at him. That man was none other than Devon Donovan and the CEO of Donovan Industry and also known as the Mafia King. Almost everyone knew who he was and feared him wherever he went.
Even his secretary, Finn Lucas, kept swallowing nervously. He could tell that Devon was not satisfied with what was happening. It is because Devon’s fingers tapping non-stop on the table. The reason why the whole room was filled with silence.
“Boss, should I cancel the shares?” Finn asked, his voice shaking as he tried to speak carefully in front of Devon.
“I don’t want to see your face. Get out of my sight,” Devon replied coldly and his face colder than ever. “To the base, Finn,” he said shortly.
Devon had only one base, but as the Mafia King, he was respected by all groups, no matter their level or status. It was like he was a god to them. He visited these groups only when something serious happened, especially when he found out they broke his rules.
While Finn drove silently to the place Devon mentioned, he was deep in thought. When Finn was a child, his parents owed a big debt to Devon’s family. That’s why Finn grew up living and working beside the Mafia King. He was the only one Devon talked to aside from his two siblings. So, Finn already knew how Devon treated people because Devon treated everyone the same way, even Finn with coldness and no emotion.
Devon Donovan didn’t believe in second chances. To him, the only answer was death.
What was the point of a second chance, anyway?
Finn stayed quiet until they reached the base. He knew Devon was in a bad mood and that any mistake could turn him into a real demon and no one wish to deal with it. Because of that, the men under Devon always tried not to make any mistakes. They waited for his signal before doing anything and when Devon and Finn entered the base, everyone stood up straight and bowed, showing respect.
“Boss,” said Chang Lu as he walked toward him.
Chang Lu was one of the few men Devon trusted, just like Finn. He was in charge of watching over the people in the base.
“I don’t give second chances,” Devon said in a cold voice. In the corner, a man was crying, his face badly beaten by Devon’s men.
“M-Mr. Devon, please let me go. I promise, I won’t come back,” the man begged. Everyone in the room had seen people get executed before, but it always felt worse when Devon was the one doing it.
“What should I cut off first?” Devon asked. “Your left hand? Your right hand? Or maybe your tongue, so you can’t speak anymore?” But just before he could continue, Devon stopped. The man screamed, and Devon raised an eyebrow.
“I know you’re not interested in women,” the man said while kneeling with tears falling from his eyes. “But please, look at the woman who was with me when I got caught.”
Devon’s aura became even darker.
“Why would I?” Devon answered coldly, and the entire room went silent.
“You will like her, Mr. Devon. She looks like an angel,” the man stammered. Devon glanced at Chang Lu, who looked just as scared as everyone else.
“Where is the woman?” Devon asked, shocking Chang Lu, Finn, and everyone in the room.
‘Did he just ask about a woman?’ Finn thought, stunned.
No one could believe what they heard. Devon never showed interest in any woman and especially not one who had been captured or forced to him like this.
“I don’t like repeating myself, Chang Lu!” Devon shouted, snapping everyone back to their senses. Shaking in fear, Chang Lu pointed toward the door where the woman was being held. Everyone was frozen in shock. They couldn’t believe what Devon had just said. Meanwhile, Chang Lu and the others started to think they had done something wrong and would face his full rage.
But something strange happened. The monster inside Devon seemed to disappear as soon as he entered the room. Lying on a bed was a pale woman, dressed in a white gown. The gown was stained with blood because it was from the torture room, after all her weak appearance made her look delicate.
Devon didn’t understand why he suddenly rushed toward her. He looked closely at her face and was shocked to see that the man wasn’t lying and she really did look like an angel. He gently held her face and checked if she had any bruises. Thankfully, she had none. Devon felt a bit of relief. He didn’t understand why he suddenly felt so drawn to this woman.
The man had only said she looked like an angel. And it was true. She looked like she had come straight from heaven.
Devon took off his coat and placed it over her. Even though he had never cared for any woman before, he couldn’t stop himself from touching her gently or feeling worried about her condition. He lifted the woman in his arms like a bride and walked out. Finn, who was waiting outside, almost fainted at what he saw. Then Devon looked at the man again.
“I think giving a second chance isn’t so bad,” he said seriously, shocking everyone around him.
“Mr. Devon, thank you! Thank you so much!” the man cried, shaking with relief. He couldn’t believe he was still alive. He thought to himself that maybe this woman really was an angel sent to save him from the devil.
“Bring the car,” Devon said while still staring at the angelic face of the young woman.
“B-Boss, are you sure?” Finn bravely asked, and everyone around him held their breath.
“Finn Lucas, are you questioning me?” Devon said in a low, dangerous voice.
“N-No, boss,” Finn replied quickly, getting into the car and silently scolding himself for daring to question the Mafia King.
‘Finn Lucas, why do you always end up talking back to the Mafia King?’ he thought as he waited for Devon outside the base.
His thoughts kept running until they finally reached the Donovan Hacienda, where Devon’s two siblings also lived. Devon, however, didn’t take his eyes off the sleeping woman in his arms. When he stepped out of the car, all the workers at the hacienda quickly moved to greet him, as they always did.
“Welcome back, Eldest Young Master,” they all said in unison.
But when they looked up and saw Devon carrying a woman in his arms, their eyes nearly popped out of their heads. Some even looked like they were about to drool from shock.
Was this really Devon Donovan? Was this a prank? Or a different person?
“This woman will live here,” Devon said in a chilling voice. “Anyone who disrespects her also disrespects me.” No one dared to speak. They all nodded quickly, too afraid to say a word.
On the other hand, there was a man sitting on the sofa, waiting for someone. It was Hadues Donovan, and he was waiting for his older brother, Devon. But he didn’t expect to see his brother carrying a woman in his arms. Even though Hadues was cold like Devon, he was still a gentleman. He stared at his brother, surprised. No one had ever seen Devon carry a woman before.
“Maybe I’m dreaming,” Hadues thought while watching his brother go upstairs.
“Butler Tom? Am I dreaming?” Hadues asked, blinking his eyes in disbelief.
“Young master, I think we are both dreaming,” Butler Tom replied, and Hadues realized it was real.
Devon looked at the woman in his arms and wondered why he brought her to his room instead of the guest room? But he was too worried about her to leave her side and he stood up and called for some maids to help him to clean this woman.
“Clean her up and dress her in these,” Devon ordered, giving them some of his own clothes. The five maids were confused. They wondered why the mafia king wanted the woman to wear his clothes? Devon never let anyone to wear his clothes—especially to woman. Now because of his action they already knew that their boss was in love.
Meanwhile, Hadues nervously bit his nails while waiting. When he saw Devon coming down the stairs, he quickly stood up and followed him. “Brother Devon,” he called, walking behind him.
“Hadues, why are you following me?” Devon asked. He was feared by many, but even Hadues admitted Devon was scarier than anyone else. Just hearing Devon speak, it make him chills.
“Is that really you, brother? And who is that woman? Do you have a girlfriend now?” Hadues kept asking. He wanted to know if his brother was in love.
“You like gossiping about my personal life now?” Devon said while checking his watch.
“Brother! How can you say that? We’re family!” Hadues shouted, which made Devon flinch.
“Hadues, lower your voice,” Devon said and walked to the stairs.
“We’re family!” Hadues repeated, but Devon ignored him and went to his room.
Devon didn’t understand his feelings. But seeing the woman in his clothes made his heart beat faster. “Why do you look like that?” he asked softly, brushing her hair. “When will you wake up?” He lay down beside her and he didn’t want to leave her side. He wanted to see her angelic face every day and before he knew it, he fell asleep.
_________
The next day, Devon woke up angry. The woman was no longer beside him. He had slept deeply and now felt restless trying to find her. Devon had never been this worried about a woman. He stormed out of the room and shouted, “Where is she?!” His voice echoed through the house. The maids rushed out from the kitchen, frightened. Seeing how the maid rushed toward the kitchen. Devon boiled in anger and ready to scold the maids for not answering him.
“I said where is the wom—” he didn't complete his words, when he saw the young lady. She was smiling at him. “Devon, were you looking for me?” she asked sweetly. Hadues, who was sipping coffee, almost choked.
‘Did she just call him Devon?’ he thought. No one ever called him by his first name. Devon hated being called that way. But now, Hadues saw his brother like a child who couldn’t answer a simple question.
“Thank you for saving me, Devon,” the woman said. “I made breakfast. I didn’t want them to serve me, so I did it myself.” She pointed to the table full of dishes and Devon didn’t recognize any of them. It was his first time to see that kind of dishes, since he was came from a wealthy family.
“Eldest young master, we tried to stop her, please forgive us,” Butler Tom said, bowing along with the others. But Devon didn’t say a word and he just patted Tom’s shoulder and walked by. Everyone was shocked. Even Finn, who had just arrived to pick him up and noticed Devon hadn’t changed clothes. Because there were still blood stains from the day before.
“Come and sit,” the woman told him, and Devon sat where she asked—even though he never sat there. Everyone was speechless. She just told the mafia king what to do and Finn thought Devon might explode from anger. But instead, the woman said, “Join us! The more, the merrier, right Devon?” and smiled like she didn’t know who he really was.
“Butler Tom,” she said, pointing at a chair. But he shook his head. They never ate together with the Donovan siblings.
“Why are you all scared of him?” she asked.
“Everyone, sit down,” Devon ordered. Everyone froze. Even Hadues was shocked. “I won’t say it twice.”
Hadues and Finn sat too, though they didn’t want to and this surprised everyone. Hadues never followed Devon’s lead unless their mother was around. Just when they were about to eat, the lady stopped them. “Let’s pray first.” But thee room filled with silence and no one dared to look at the demon.
“Do you pray before and after meals?” she asked Devon, while Finn and Hadues, sitting beside him, were trembling. “From now on, you should pray,” she said kindly. Devon suddenly remembered his mother, who always prayed before and after meals.
“What do I need to do?” he asked, unsure.
How could a man like him, who only knew how to kill and suddenly needs to pray?
Hadues kept reacting to everything the woman said. He looked at her with admiration, just like he did with his brother, but his admiration for her was different. Devon looked like a child, obeying her words.
“Just close your eyes, thank God for the blessings, and ask forgiveness for your sins,” the woman said.
Devon was about to close his eyes, but flinched. “Why should I thank Him? I don’t want to,” he said and started eating and the others followed, except for her.
“It’s okay. One day, you’ll pray for someone.
Devon paused. He didn’t know why, but her words made him uneasy. It felt like something bad was going to happen, but he stayed quiet, watching her pray alone.
Hailey finished teaching Seraphina what to do to work, and Seraphina quickly learn because she really paid attention. While they were both busy working, Hailey suddenly wondered if their boss had any connection to her? She thought to herself that Seraphina wouldn’t be able to wear something like this unless they had a deep relationship. If she really looked at what Seraphina was wearing and the bag she has, she could tell it wasn’t cheap. After all, she didn’t really know how to spot expensive items since she wasn’t rich and never have one. But then she shook her head and thought it over.'Maybe she’s the boss’s cousin, that’s why she agreed?' Hailey thought, since it made sense given Seraphina’s beauty and the good genes of the Donovans. That was all she could think of before she turned her gaze back to the computer. She was about to start typing when Seraphina suddenly spoke up."Here," Seraphina said softly, handing over a cute container filled with cookies.Hailey couldn't help b
Devon noticed Seraphina's face while they were happily eating the cookies she made. He immediately held her cheek to make her look at him. "What's bothering you? I can help," Devon said with concern, and she smiled back at him. "I don't want to stay here, I want to work," she said sadly, and Devon didn't want to see her upset. So, he quickly thought of a way to cheer her up. "You can work at my company," Devon suggested, and Seraphina looked at him like a child, her eyes still a bit sleepy. "Did you just say your company?" Seraphina asked in surprise, realizing that she really didn't know who he was. Devon couldn't help but laugh because he thought there was no one else who didn't recognize him. "You're laughing!" Seraphina said. Who would have thought that she didn't know him? Meanwhile, everyone knows him well, which made Devon think that's why she treats him this way. She doesn't even seem scared to say whatever comes to her mind, even if she hasn't thought it through. "Why d
