Her hand shook as she received the report from the gynaecologist. June Trevor had felt sick for the past few weeks, but she barely had the time to take care of herself.
Her husband, Rauf Salvador was scheduled to have his eyes surgery after five years, and she had dedicated every seconds helping with the preparation. Five years of their marriage and five years of him being in darkness. She was only able to come check herself now that he was in recovery room and waiting to see if the surgery was successful or not. "You don't need to be nervous, Mrs Salvador. I assure you that the result would bring a smile to your face." June nodded. The only thing that could bring a smile to her face was Rauf gaining his sight back. She knew how badly he wanted to see her. He murmured that everynight they made love. He would traced his hand over her body, claiming that he was trying to get her exact shape. Slowly, June opened the report. Her eyes moved over the wordings and her hand flew directly to her stomach. "You mean there's a life in me right now." The gynaecologist laughed. "I told you, Mrs Salvador. This news will bring you joy. Congratulations, you are four weeks gone." The fear that June felt was instantly replaced with a wide smile. A child. One that belonged to her and Rauf. A child that would cement her position as Mrs Salvador. Rauf would be so glad when he finally regain his sight and discovered that her, his wife was carrying his child. Though, he might first be disappointed that she wasn't Amie, her step sister, but after seeing the report he should be able to accept her. Considering their relationship now. Five years ago, her stepsister was engaged to be married to Rauf Salvador, the mafia Lord everyone feared. It was worse than her family was in his debt, and the only way he would overlook it was a marriage alliance with the Trevor's. But, few days to the wedding, Rauf was involved in a tragic accident which accidently took his sight. Amie refused to be married to an imbecile - her word - she refused to be a caretaker. And she ran away from home before the wedding could take place. With their family honor and life on the line, her step mother, Freda Trevor and father, Samir Trevor, begged her to take Amie's position. A refusal might led to Rauf's gang wiping off their whole family. At first, June had refused but her step mother cried holding her arms with claim that she would be the reason the whole family get wiped out. June accepted. And since then, she hadn't regretted it. Rauf was her dream husband. He was everything she could ask for in a husband. Gladly, she thanked the gynaecologist and headed towards the opthalmology department. Her hand rested on the report and she thought of the best way to break it to Rauf that she, June was the wife he had married five years ago and not Amie. The closer she got to his room, she started hearing voices. Sounds of laughter filled the hall and a smile tugged on her lips. Her family must be here to congratulate him. If they were laughing it meant Rauf's surgery was a success. She stepped into the room and everyone turned towards her. They all went silent, but that didn't bother her. What bothered her was Amie seated on the bed with a plate of food, feeding Rauf while he opened his mouth eagerly to her. Without waiting for an explanation, she moved towards them. "What are you doing?" Her question was directed to Amie. But it was Rauf who looked up at her and blinked. "Who is she?" He asked Amie. June could hear the sound of her heart breaking. Who was she? She was the woman who had been by your side for five years. The woman you promised to protect with everything you have once you regained your sight. Amie waved casually. "Nobody. I'm sure you won't remember my elder sister." Rauf raised an eyebrow, his handsome face lit in confession. "Oh, she came to celebrate us just like the rest of the family." June blinked. What was he talking about? And more importantly, when did Amie arrived? Ever since she left home five years ago, no one had heard from her, and now that Rauf could see again, she was suddenly here. June turned to her parents, expecting them to support her. Then Rauf spoke again. "Come on, darling. I'm hungry." Amie looked at June with a satisfied smug, before dipping another spoon of food in his mouth. At that moment, June felt like she was in a bad dream that she refused to wake from. She turned towards Rauf. "She's not your wife. I am." Slap. June clutched her ears and watched her stepmother moved back. "I already told you times without number June, you can't go around claiming your sister's husband is yours. That's barbaric." But June wasn't ready to give up, "But he's my husband." Amie dropped the plate of food. "Sister, I know you have always have a crush on my husband but it's wrong to claim him as yours." Rauf looked around confused. What was this lady talking about? "How could you be my wife when I don't even know you?" His tone was low like he couldn't even bother raising his voice at her. The others word had no effect on her like Rauf's. "Let me explain, Rauf. Five years ago..." But she was cut off by him. "I don't care what happened to you five years ago." His gaze flicked to Amie. "It's been five years and I am finally able to see the love of my life. Do you think I'll spend the day listening to a nobody?" June froze. Was this the man who had promised to protect her with everything? "But..." Before she could continue, Rauf clapped twice. Two of his bodyguards appeared. "Sir." He pointed at June as if she was a fly disturbing his peace. "I want this woman out of my room."The room was silent as June took in the words. New Central State. How was she supposed to find her mother in such a busy state?"So, what do you say? Do you want to or don't you want to?" Her father said in a sing song, as if he were talking to a little child. It was the tone he had always used on her when she younger. And, it might have worked on her then, but she was no longer a little child. Soon, she would become a mother, who needs to protect her child. June swallowed the lump in her throat. "Give me the letter and I will answer whatever you want."She needed to get that letter. They might be clues in it to find her mother. If truly her mother was desperate to find her, then she had to let her know somehow that she was also in the New Central State. But, her father didn't give her the letter immediately. His eyes moved around her like she was some sort of puzzle he couldn't place together. June remained expressionless as she stared at the letter in his hand. After a while,
"You know exactly what I want. Come to the house, I'll be waiting for you."The call dropped before she could say something else. June's fist tightened on the phone. She felt her anger rising, but beneath it was also hope. Hope she had lost completely.Hope for a family that Rauf had temporarily given her, only for him to snatch it away, cruelly. It couldn't truly be. Could be?Her father was a cruel man, and would do or say anything to achieve his goal. Yet, she looked at Ellie who hadn't uttered a word. "Can you please give me a dress? I left all of mine at Rauf's"Ellie blinked. "You're not seriously going back."June inhaled. "Ellie, I need to know. I need to know if my mother is truly alive or not. I can't move on without knowing."Speechless, Ellie stared at her. She had watched June grow without anyone in her corner. Every special day had always been dedicated to Amie. June had mourned her mother every single day of her life, and Ellie wouldn't say she knew exactly how she
"Sir, there's something you should know."As soon as the guard opened his mouth, the office door slid open. Amie peeped her head him, and seeing the guard looking tense and nervous, she walked inside. She stride to Rauf's side. Thankfully, she had the decency to cover herself up. "Darling, are you working already?" She questioned, her gaze moving among the files on his table. But Rauf only relaxed on his chair. He waved his hand off to dismissed the guard. He just have to question him another day. Amie moved her hand over her body, "It's lonely without you on the bed, darling. Remember, we always sleep together." She pouted at him, trying to act cute. "Don't go changing now that you can see."Rauf chuckled. He wished he could promise her he wouldn't change, but he couldn't make a promise when he was this much in doubt. Instead, he lifted her off his leg and led her out of this office. "I think we should go sleep now. Tomorrow is going to be a busy day."He was resuming back a
It had been three days. Three days without Rauf in her life and three days trying to find something to do with her life. Ellie had resigned form her workplace and they had both sat down to search for jobs in New Central State before relocating there. It was better knowing they would have something to fall back on, than going empty handed. After searching tiredlessly, June found an assistant job in a vet clinic with good pay. At least, it would be enough for her to register for her prenatal and started getting new things for herself. Ellie also got a job at a restaurant, but she planned on working part-time as she was going to be schooling while working."Is that the last thing you need to place in the bag?" June asked. She had watched Ellie packed her bag, and because most of her belongings were still at Salvador's mansion, she had absolutely nothing to pack.It was horrible, but she had promised not to cry again. They were some things that were personal to her, that she wouldn'
When he didn't respond, and kept staring at her, Amie felt her palm becoming sweaty. Did he find out something already? She gave him the gift and covered up the room color. Everything should be fine. Amie blinked, moving closer to him. She placed her hand right into his. "Come on, darling. What's happening? Why do you look like that?"Rauf schooled his features immediately. If this was an act he needed to find out. He shouldn't give them a clue that he suspected anything. He forced a smile at her. "Sorry, Mami. It's the aftermath of the surgery."Amie smiled at him. "Come on. I'll make you feel good, but first, come and eat."She pulled him away from the grey room towards the dining. The silence in the room was deafening as the maid came to drop the food on the table. There was no whispers from the maid like it used to whenever he heard them drop his food. He waited and watched as Amie commanded them to put their food on their plate. Another thing he had been looking forward to
After spending three more days in the hospital, Rauf was finally discharged. The hospital bed had been boring to him than he expected, and Amie had forbidden him from bringing work to his sick bed. Finally, he was going home and couldn't wait to see what his home now looked like after five years. But, he had a feeling he was going to love it. Though he was blind, he had done a lot of things in that home with his wife. Things he finally wanted to see face to face. "Darling, I hired a new interior decorator to change the look of your room. You'll love it." Amie said as she led him towards the room. Instead of a smile, a frown occupied Rauf's face. What did she mean by his room?It should be their room. She had promised to move fully in after his surgery was successful. But he kept quiet. For the past three days at the hospital, Rauf had resulted in eating the hospital's meal. No matter how Aime had prepared the food, it just didn't taste the same way it did when he was blind. It
