Maeve

“What’s happening to me?” My voice sounded far away. Strange. As though someone else had spoken from inside my body.

Ronan stared at me. He didn’t answer.

That frightened me more than anything he could have said.

The man who always had an explanation, a command, or an arrogant response waiting behind his teeth had gone completely still beneath me. His hands remained locked around my waist, holding me against him in the cooling bathwater, but the grip had changed.

Not possession. Not hunge

  • The Mate Hunt   Chapter 49: Elowen

RonanMaeve opened the door, but her eyes slid right past me. She fixed her gaze on Elowen instead, steeling herself.“Tell me everything.” The words were calm, but the bond between us told a different story, fear shivering through it, tangled with exhaustion, grief, and the desperate need for something solid amid the chaos.I fought the urge to close the distance between us. She’d locked herself in my room for hours because she needed that space. The fact that she’d opened the door at all felt like more than I deserved.Elowen studied Maeve for a long, quiet moment. The silver in Maeve’s eyes had faded with the sunrise, but it was still there, an unmistakable glimmer that set her apart from any ordinary wolf.“Inside,” Elowen said, and swept past Maeve without waiting for an invitation. That was always her way, she’d walked into my council chambers, my territory, even my private bath as if locks and boundaries were nothing more than polite suggestions.Cassian followed her in. I took

  • The Mate Hunt   Chapter 48: Everything

MaeveThe memory crashed into me, sudden and brutal. Elara at the altar, Mara standing behind her, a knife glinting in her hand. Blood. A whisper curled through my mind, cruel and persistent: You should have chosen the other sister.I tried to convince myself it wasn’t real. That Ronan had shaped that vision. That the bond between us, twisted by the ritual, had conjured a false past, something he wanted me to see, not truth. But every time I tried to believe the lie, Ronan’s grief seeped through the door, steady and unyielding. It was too ancient to be fabricated. Too deep to be anything but real.Mara’s face flashed before me again, the sly smile, the streak of blood across her cheek. My stomach twisted, nausea rising.“No,” I whispered into the dark room.Outside, Ronan shifted, his body tensing at the sound of my voice. He heard me, but held to his promise... he said nothing.Dawn crept in as a thin line of gray beneath the curtains. The mansion had finally settled, the chaos of th

  • The Mate Hunt   Chapter 47: That is the problem

Maeve“I’m not a queen.” The denial burst from me, too quick, too loud, echoing off the marble and stone. Heads dropped, wolves averted their gazes, as if my refusal was an order in itself.Darius managed a crooked smile, blood shining at the split of his lip. “Tell that to every Alpha you just forced onto his knees.”Shame burned through me. “I didn’t know what I was doing.”He didn’t soften. “That makes you more dangerous, not less.”Ronan moved between us, protective. His presence was a wall. “You’ve said enough.”Darius’s eyes narrowed. “I wasn’t speaking to you.”“You won’t speak to her at all,” Ronan shot back.Darius’s laughter was sharp, then broken by a wince as pain lanced his ribs. “You nearly killed me in the forest, Caine. Do you intend to finish the job in my own home?”“If you continue frightening her.”Ignoring Ronan, Darius looked at me, gaze steady, voice low. “I’m not the thing she should fear.”The bond surged hot and angry between me and Ronan, and power flickered

  • The Mate Hunt   Chapter 46: Queen

MaeveThe command exploded, an invisible shockwave that ripped through the air.The bathroom door slammed open so hard it rattled on its hinges, a streak of steam trailing out behind it. Copper pipes deep in the walls groaned, as if the very bones of Blackthorne Mansion felt the impact. Beneath my bare feet, a jagged crack tore through the stone tiles, splitting the silence with a sound like splitting ice.But the noise didn’t stop at the door. It rolled beyond the suite, down the long marble hallways, echoing like distant thunder. I sensed it spreading, unstoppable, through every corridor and chamber. Each heartbeat across the mansion seemed to drop, not stop, but lower, as if the very rhythm of life had been forced to its knees. Then, chaos.Bodies struck the floors everywhere. The sharp slap of knees against marble. Somewhere below, glass shattered... an explosion of fragments and panic. A man’s shout rang out, raw and frightened, before silence swallowed his voice. The mansion its

  • The Mate Hunt   Chapter 45: Stop

MaeveRonan’s gaze swept over me, sharp and searching, as if he was seeing me for the very first time.“My wolf obeyed you,” he murmured. The towel in my hands nearly slipped to the floor. “No.”He didn’t move. “The Hunger obeyed you.”I shook my head. “I told you to stop.”“Yes.”“You listened.”He hesitated. “No.” His voice dropped to a low, trembling note. “You commanded it.”Across the mirror, the silver shimmered, burning brighter. A strange pressure built behind my eyes, a sound, not a voice, but a chorus, hundreds of them, crowding my skull. My knees buckled.Ronan caught me before I could fall. The moment his hands closed around my arms, the world shattered. The bath chamber vanished, stone dissolving into white marble. The air chilled, thick with incense instead of steam.I stood in a room I’d never seen, a grand chamber with tall windows overlooking a snow-laden courtyard, silver candles flickering along the walls. Wolves in ceremonial black and grey circled a marble altar ca

Awe.His gaze moved over my face with a reverence that made my stomach twist.“Ronan.” His name traveled through the newly completed bond. The connection blazed in response. I felt his shock. His disbelief. And beneath both, something that came dangerously close to fear.“What is it?” I demanded. His eyes lifted fully to mine. “Your eyes.”I touched my face as though I might feel whatever he saw. “What about them?”Ronan’s throat moved. “They’re silver.”The room tilted.I pulled away from hi
