Maeve

The eastern fort appeared through the trees just as darkness finally swallowed the road behind us. I squinted, expecting more... a village, perhaps, or the beginnings of a settlement. But the fort was smaller than I had imagined, barely more than a rough circle of thick stone wall enclosing a handful of low buildings, two watchtowers, a stable, and a wide, empty courtyard. Iron spikes bristled along the top of the wall, their shadows flickering in the torchlight beside the closed gate.

I am so sorry you feel this way and have experienced that so far. I can tell you that it does get better and as the bond between Ronan and her strengthens, the arguments aren't as "silly".

Maeve is really annoying.....the silly arguments she starts every now & then are a turn off .....her behaviour reduces the interest to read this story !

She is being so purposefully obstinate. It’s getting a bit annoying. Everything doesn’t have to be a fight.

  • The Mate Hunt   Chapter 107: The Luna Mark

MaeveThe tattooed man stepped forward, and this time, I recognized him. Not by name. But I had seen him before. He had been with Maris and the others outside the Alpha chambers when they brought me the Luna robes, the earrings, all those ceremonial things I hadn't known what the hell to do with. Now he carried a black leather case.Cassian stopped beside him. "This is Ajax."Of course it was. I let out a weak breath that almost became a laugh. "So you're Ajax."His mouth twitched. "I've been called worse.""I'm sure Ronan has several options prepared.""I do," Ronan muttered beside me.Ajax ignored him. I liked him already. He lowered himself onto one knee in front of me and placed the case on the ground. When he opened it, everything inside was arranged with irritating precision. Needles. Small bottles of black ink. Silver tools. Clean cloths. A few jars filled with things I didn't recognize. My stomach tightened. Apparently agreeing to become Luna had sounded considerably easier b

  • The Mate Hunt   Chapter 106: I love you

RonanFor one heartbeat, everything stopped. The shouting around the cub house. Nessa's quiet sobs. Eli crying against her chest. The guards being helped from the ground. All of it disappeared beneath the sound of those words.Maeve's fingers tightened weakly around mine. My wolf went silent. Not calm. Never calm. Silent in the way a predator became silent when something threatened what belonged to him.I looked at Cassian. "Get Ajax."Maeve frowned against my chest. "Who the hell is Ajax?"Elowen's head snapped toward me. "No."I ignored her. "Cassian. Now."For perhaps the first time in his life, my Beta hesitated after receiving a direct order. That was enough for Maeve to realize something was wrong. Her eyes narrowed. "Would someone like to tell me who the fuck Ajax is?""The Mark Keeper," Elowen said.Maeve blinked. "The what?""He handles ceremonial marks. Rank markings. Pack tattoos." Elowen glared at me. "And the Luna mark."Maeve went completely still. Then, "Absolutely fuck

  • The Mate Hunt   Chapter 105: The Bond Is Dying

Ronan"Maeve!"Her body went limp in my arms. One second she was standing beside me. The next, nothing. I caught her before her head struck the ground and dropped with her."Maeve." Blood covered her mouth. Too much fucking blood. My wolf slammed against my skin.Mate."Maeve, open your eyes."Her lashes fluttered. Barely.Around us, wolves were moving again. Guards shouting. Someone crying. Nessa sobbing into Eli's hair. I heard none of it."ELOWEN!"The command ripped out of me hard enough that every wolf nearby recoiled. Maeve flinched in my arms. Good. She could hear me."Stay awake."Her eyes cracked open. "Stop yelling."Relief hit me so violently I nearly laughed. Instead, I wiped the blood beneath her nose. More replaced it. My relief vanished."What did you do?"Maeve frowned. "Saved your guards?""By nearly killing yourself?""They're not dead.""Neither are you going to be."Footsteps pounded toward us. Elowen shoved through the gathering wolves carrying her medical bag. "Wh

  • The Mate Hunt   Chapter 104: I Told You

MaeveI felt him before I turned. His presence slammed into the bond with enough force that my wolf surged toward him instinctively. Then his boots hit the dirt behind me."What the fuck happened?"Maris was beside him, breathless from running. Several more wolves followed. Two healers. Cassian. Another guard. None of them mattered. I couldn't look away from Nessa. She was still frozen beneath my command, still half-shifted, still trembling so violently that her claws scraped against the ground even though she couldn't move them forward."Maeve."Ronan's voice came closer. I felt his hand hover near my back. He didn't touch me. Probably because the silver beneath my skin was glowing hard enough that even I could see it."She can't hold this forever," one of the healers said."I know." My jaw ached from clenching it.Nessa strained again. Pain ripped behind my eyes. Fuck.Ronan stepped into my peripheral vision. His eyes moved over Nessa. Then the wounded guards. Then me. His expressio

  • The Mate Hunt   Chapter 103: A Mother Without Her Cub

MaeveBy the time Soren and I reached the smaller family dining room, I had been bowed to seven more times. I counted. Mostly because every single one made me want to crawl out of my own skin."Stop looking like someone threatened you," Soren said as she reached for the coffee."People keep bowing at me.""Yes. Tragic.""It's weird.""You'll survive.""That remains to be seen."A snort came from the other end of the table. Maris sat there with a plate already piled with eggs, potatoes, and bacon. I hadn't even noticed her."You should have seen Ronan when wolves first started bowing to him," Maris said.My interest immediately perked up. "Oh?"Soren grinned. Maris pointed her fork at her. "Don't.""What?" Soren asked innocently."You know exactly what."I sat down across from them. "I would actually like to know exactly what.""Maeve.""Maris."She glared. I smiled. Soren slid a mug toward me."He tripped."I froze. "No.""Yes."Maris sighed. "Coming down the council steps."My mouth

  • The Mate Hunt   Chapter 102: Changes

MaeveThere was something about Soren's answers that unsettled me."Mate?" I asked, even though I already guessed the answer. She shook her head. "No.""Cubs?"Another shake. "No.""Parents?"Her eyes didn't flicker. "Dead.""Siblings?""One. She mated into another pack years ago."I studied her, searching for a thread of connection. "So you have nobody here?"A wry smile curved across her lips, almost amused. "I have four hundred wolves here, Maeve.""You know what I mean."She did. The amusement faded, replaced by something quieter as she glanced down at the ledgers piled between us. "I was supposed to belong to Elara's household."The words hung between us, soft but heavy. For a moment, I was at a loss. Soren broke the silence first, pushing another stack of paperwork my way."So yes," she said, tone brightening with false cheer. "I am extremely excited about you."I eyed the mountain of folders. "That sounded threatening.""It should.""You're trying to dump three years of work on
