"Lock the secondary grid down to forty percent capacity or the entire platform will shear completely off its mounts!" Thorne roared, his voice nearly drowned out by the piercing, high-frequency whine of the heavy-duty laser array slicing into the dark, wet stone of the cavern wall.

"I'm already maxing out the power distributors, Director!" shouted Vance, his knuckles bleeding where he had slammed them against the emergency terminal's cracked glass casing. "The mountain's neural network is fighting back! Every time we beam a high-intensity pulse into the fault lines, the feedback loop redirects triple the wattage straight back into our main breaker!"

"Then bypass the breakers and dump the excess into the bedrock!" Thorne slammed his palm onto the central control console, his face illuminated in harsh, flickering flashes of blue and crimson laser light. "I didn't bring this expedition two miles underground to be outsmarted by a glorified pile of silicate and magma! Burn the tunnels out! Cauterize every damn nerve ending until this mountain stops fighting our drills!"

"If we pump any more thermal discharge into those load-bearing veins, the tectonic shelf won't just shift—it'll collapse the entire subterranean cavity on top of us!" Vance spun around in his chair, his eyes wide with a mixture of exhaustion and sheer, unadulterated panic. "Look at the seismic monitors! The entire ridge is breathing, Director! It's an organism, not a mine!"

"It's an asset!" Thorne snapped back, leaning over the console so his face was inches from Vance's trembling form. "And right now, that asset is rebelling against its rightful owners. Get those laser turrets calibrated to sweep the eastern perimeter. If anything moves down those corridors—man, beast, or geological anomaly—I want it turned into glass."

"You're going to kill everyone left in the lower sectors," Vance whispered, staring down at the glowing red execution commands flashing across his monitor. "There are still corporate engineers trapped down in the sump sections."

"They knew the risks when they signed their hazard waivers," Thorne said coldly, his fingers flying across the override sequence. "Now execute the command before the mountain's pressure surge blows this entire command center into low orbit."

A violent tremor shook the cavern roof, sending a cascade of sharp, jagged rock shards crashing down onto the metal housing of the laser array. Sparks showered across the deck as a primary cable snapped with a sound like a gunshot, whipping wildly through the air before curling up in a smelling cloud of scorched rubber and ozone.

"Director! The eastern junction is completely overrun!" shouted a guard from the upper gantry, leveling his assault rifle into the impenetrable gloom of the descending tunnel network. "Something's coming up through the root systems! The lasers aren't stopping it—they're just making it angry!"

"Focus the beam concentration!" Thorne vaulted over the control console, grabbing the heavy targeting gimbal himself and forcing the twin laser barrels downward toward the pulsating mass of hyper-accelerated vines writhing up through the floor grates. "Let's see how fast it grows back when it's burning at three thousand degrees!"

A blinding flash of white-hot light filled the cavern, accompanied by a shriek that sounded less like tearing metal and more like the dying scream of a colossal animal. The glowing green vines hissed, bubbling violently as the laser energy bored straight down into the living rock, turning stone and sap into a thick, choking geyser of boiling steam.

"Keep firing!" Thorne laughed, a manic edge creeping into his voice as the smoke billowed around his soot-stained silhouette. "We're burning out its nervous system! It can't fight back if it doesn't have a pulse!"

"Director, look at the pressure gauge on the main extraction valve!" Vance shrieked, pointing a shaking finger at a dial that was spinning wildly past the red danger zone. "The thermal feedback isn't killing the mountain—it's supercharging the core! The pressure is doubling every ten seconds!"

Thorne froze, his hand locked on the laser gimbal as a deep, agonizing groaning sound reverberated up from the very soles of his boots. It wasn't the sound of stone cracking; it was the sound of an ancient, sleeping titan taking a massive, shuddering breath.

"That's impossible," Thorne muttered, his eyes darting to the primary pressure readout as the digital numbers blurred past safe operational limits. "We cut off its thermal vents. It shouldn't have anywhere to push the energy."

"It has somewhere," Vance whispered, staring horror-struck at the ceiling as hairline fractures began to spiderweb across the reinforced concrete overhead. "It's pushing it right back into our faces."

"Get out," Thorne breathed, the realization finally hitting his manic focus as the laser array began to warp and bend under the unbearable subterranean heat. "Get off the platform—now!"

Before anyone could move toward the emergency lift, a deafening blast tore through the floor beneath them, sending a column of white-hot steam and blinding green bioluminescent light shooting straight up through the command center.

"He is not bleeding," Ibu Marta muttered, her fingers pausing over the dark green poultice smeared across Arung’s bruised ribs. Her gaze flicked sharply past the bamboo privacy screen toward the dim corner of the clinic where Rangga stood motionless. "He is hardening. Like river silt baking in a kiln. If the corporation’s sweepers catch the scent of that geothermal calcification on him, they will skin him alive just to harvest the core-metal."Arung hissed through his teeth as Marta pressed down hard on a fractured intercostal. "They aren't looking for minerals, Marta. They're looking for witnesses who can prove Thorne's seismic tampering triggered the caldera collapse.""They are looking for loose ends," a sharp voice cut through the heavy, medicinal air of the clinic. The heavy canvas flap at the front of the hut pushed aside, letting in a shaft of pale, sickly daylight and the heavy smell of diesel exhaust. A man stepped inside, ducking beneath the low lintel. He wore a crisp, dust

"If you throw up on my floor, I will sew your mouth shut with fishing line," Ibu Marta warned, not even looking up from the cast-iron mortar where she was grinding a greenish, pungent root into a thick, bubbling paste.Arung groaned, sliding down the splintered wooden wall of the back room until his boots hit the uneven dirt floor. His fingers immediately flew to his chest, pressing hard against the raw, agonizing ache of his cracked ribs. Every breath felt like inhaling a handful of broken glass, but the biting, medicinal sting of the ointment Marta was slapping onto his torso helped cut through the white-hot haze of pain."I've had better mornings," Arung gasped, his voice thin and wet. He squeezed his eyes shut as Marta pressed a calloused thumb directly over a bruised intercostal muscle, forcing a harsh, involuntary yelp from his throat. "Careful! I'm already half-broken.""Quiet," Marta snapped, her dark eyes darting across the small, cramped room to where Rangga stood rigidly by

"Get in," Rangga commanded, his voice vibrating with a dull, tectonic resonance that drowned out the shriek of the overhead drones.Arung didn't hesitate. He hauled his battered frame across the passenger seat, slamming the heavy steel door just as a cluster of kinetic warning darts shattered against the pavement inches from the rear bumper. "Hotwire it! Move, move, move!"Rangga's stone-bound fingers tore the ignition housing clean off the dashboard with a sickening crunch of exposed copper and shredded plastic. A flurry of sparks illuminated the cramped cab as he jammed two live leads together, coaxing the sputtering diesel engine into a deafening roar. The utility truck lurched forward, its rear tires throwing up a violent rooster tail of mud and gravel as it smashed straight through the facility’s secondary chain-link security gate, sending twisted wires and snapping posts flying in all directions.Behind them, the corporate command center’s massive electronic billboards blinked i

The screech of automated drone alarms tore through the yellow haze of the lower access depot, echoing off the corrugated metal siding of the shipping containers and bouncing across the wide-open asphalt. Overhead, a pair of triangle-winged surveillance units dipped their sleek noses downward, their twin red optical lenses spinning in frantic search patterns as they locked onto the sudden movement near the service hatch."We've been flagged!" Arung shouted over the howling sirens, stumbling out of the dark opening and slamming hard against the side of a rusted utility truck. He clutched his cracked ribs, his breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps as a dark stain bloomed across the front of his torn shirt. "Rangga, the drones—they're vectoring right toward us!"Rangga didn't look up. His massive frame dropped heavily onto the driver-side running board of the utility truck, the metal chassis groaning audibly under his unnatural, mineral-heavy weight. Without a word of warning, his right

"And if the structural supports give out entirely?" Arung challenged, his eyes flashing with a desperate, exhausted defiance as he wiped a smear of dark soot and sweat from his forehead. "You think being half-stone makes you immune to a few thousand tons of collapsing slate?""I think staying here means Thorne’s cleanup crew uses us for target practice," Rangga fired back without turning around, his heavy stone-bound fingers already prying at the rusted manual crank of the lower service hatch. "Pick your poison, Arung: crushed by rock or executed by corporate judges. Move."With a shriek of tortured metal and a shower of orange sparks, the heavy iron hatch gave way, tumbling outward into the blinding daylight of the lower valley floor. The transition was instantaneous and brutal. Gone was the claustrophobic, pitch-black gloom of the ore tunnels; in its place lay the sprawling, chaotic tarmac of the lower access depot, baking under a sickly yellow haze. Automated drone alarms wailed in

"The conveyor tunnel is our only way past the lower security gate without triggering their biometric grid," Rangga rasped, his voice dropping an octave as a heavy shudder rippled through his calcified torso. "If we cross the open tarmac, the automated turrets will cut us to ribbons before we reach the perimeter fence."Arung forced himself up from the floor, his teeth gritted so hard a thin line of crimson leaked from the corner of his mouth. "The ore conveyors? Rangga, those tunnels are completely flooded with boiling runoff from the primary heat exchangers. One slip, and you're boiled alive in your own boots.""I don't bleed anymore, Arung," Rangga replied flatly, turning his massive, stone-bound shoulder toward the rusted maintenance hatch that led directly into the subterranean transport chutes. "You do. Stay behind me. Let my weight break the steam valves.""And if the structural supports give out entirely?" Arung challenged, his eyes flashing with a desperate, exhausted defiance
