Chapter 10

ELENA

My throat closed up. I couldn't breathe.

"You," he said. "You were singing."

I didn't remember. I was too young. But I remembered my mother coming up from the cellar with her apron covered in blood, and telling me she had been cutting meat.

"I owed her my life," Kade said. "I swore to her that if she ever needed me, I would come. She sent word to me once, years later, when the winter fever came to Willowbrook. I sent medicine. She never asked for anything else." His voice went rough. "Then the fire came, and I was too late. I was too late for her, Elena. I'm sorry."

I couldn't look at him. Tears ran down my face and dripped onto the bread in my hands.

Find Kade. Only Kade. He will keep you safe.

She knew him. She trusted him. All those years.

"Then who burned the village?" I whispered. "If it wasn't you. Who?"

His jaw tightened.

"I don't know yet," he said. "But I'm going to find out."

He was lying. Not about not knowing. About something else. I could feel it through the bond, a small dark knot of something he was holding back.

But I was too tired to fight him anymore.

That night, I dreamed again.

I was in the cellar. Dark. Cold. My side was on fire where the blade had gone in. I was lying on the dirt floor, pressing my hands over the wound, trying not to make a sound.

Above me, through the wooden floor, I could hear footsteps. Heavy boots walking through my mother's house. Things breaking. Glass shattering.

And then a voice.

A man's voice. Calm. Smooth. Almost gentle.

"Leave no one alive," the voice said. "Burn every house. And find the girl. Especially the girl."

Someone else answered, too low to hear.

"She saw my face at the gate," the smooth voice said. "She can't be allowed to talk. Find her."

Then the boots walked away, and the smoke started pouring down through the cracks, and I heard my mother screaming my name somewhere outside.

I woke up choking.

I sat up in the dark, my hand pressed over my mouth. My heart was pounding so hard I thought it would break my ribs.

The voice. I knew that voice. I had heard it somewhere. Recently. I knew I had.

But I couldn't remember where.

I didn't sleep again.

The full moon came too fast.

On the second night, they led me out to the ring. It was a wide circle of packed dirt in a clearing behind the pack house, surrounded by flat stones. The moon hung huge and white over the trees. The whole pack stood around the edge of the ring, shoulder to shoulder, their eyes shining silver in the moonlight.

Kade walked beside me as far as the edge of the circle. Then he stopped. By law, he couldn't go any farther.

"Remember," he said quietly. "Patience. Let her come to you."

I nodded. My mouth was too dry to speak.

He looked at me like he wanted to say something else. Then someone stepped up beside us.

Silas.

He was smiling his warm, kind smile. He held out a small dagger in his bandaged hand. It had a black handle and a thin, bright blade that shone in the moonlight.

"For luck," he said. "Better than a wooden stick, don't you think? The law allows one blade."

Kade frowned but nodded. "Take it."

I reached out and took the dagger.

Silas leaned in closer, just a little. Just enough that his mouth was near my ear, and nobody else could hear. His voice was soft. Calm. Smooth. Almost gentle.

And every drop of blood in my body turned to ice.

I knew that voice.

Leave no one alive. Especially the girl.

"You should have died in that fire, little human," Silas whispered. "Don't worry. Today you will."

Then he stepped back with his kind smile, patted my shoulder like an old friend, and walked away into the crowd.

I couldn't move. I couldn't breathe. I couldn't even scream.

On the other side of the ring, the crowd split open. Vera walked out into the moonlight, tall and smiling, rolling her shoulders.

And the pack began to howl.

Chapter 21KADEFor four days in a row, she went to the same place.I felt it through the bond every afternoon. She would finish her training with me in the yard, barely saying a word. She would eat a little at lunch. Then she would walk out of the pack house and keep walking, far to the east, until the pull in my chest stretched thin and aching. She would stay there for hours. And when she came back, her heart was calmer. Lighter. She smelled like lavender and wood smoke. On the first day, I told myself it was good. She needed somewhere to breathe. Somewhere away from me.On the second day, I told myself the same thing. On the third day, I asked Tobias where the east path went.He scratched his head. "Nowhere, really. Just the old woods. And the omega's hut."I went very still."The omega," I said."Krystal." Tobias shrugged. "He grows his herbs out there. Keeps to himself. Nobody goes near him much."On the fourth day, I followed her.I didn't go as a wolf. I didn't sneak. I walked

Chapter 20ELENAKrystal kept his head down. His hands were shaking around the lavender.Orrin lifted his boot and kicked the nearest basket over.Leaves and flowers spilled across the wet dirt. Then he kicked the second one. And the third. He stomped on the lavender, grinding it into the mud with his heel. The other two laughed and laughed.Krystal didn't fight back. He didn't even move. He just knelt there with his eyes on the ground, like he had done this a hundred times before. Like he knew that if he fought, it would only be worse.I didn't think. There was a row of clay pots by the edge of the garden, stacked up by the wall. I grabbed the top one. It was heavy and full of wet soil.I threw it as hard as I could. It hit Orrin right in the middle of the back. It didn't hurt him much. But it burst open, and wet black dirt went everywhere. Down his neck. Into his hair. All over his clean shirt. The laughing stopped.Orrin turned around very slowly. His face was covered in mud. His e

Chapter 19ELENAFor a long moment, neither of us moved. The rain tapped against the window. Somewhere down in the yard, a horse snorted. Kade stood in the doorway with water dripping off his coat, and I stood by his desk with the black cloth in my shaking hand."Elena," he said slowly. "Put that down.""Why?" My voice came out sharp. "Are you afraid I'll show someone?"He closed the door behind him. Not hard. Softly. Like he was trying not to scare a wild animal."I came back early," he said. "I felt you. Through the bond. Your heart was racing like you were in danger. I thought something happened to you.""Something did happen to me." I held the cloth up between us. "Your pack happened to me."He looked at it. Then he looked at me. His face was tired, and sad, and I hated that it made my chest hurt."I found that in the street," he said. "That night. When I got to Willowbrook, the village was already burning. It was lying on the ground near the bakery. I picked it up.""And you kept

Chapter 18ELENAThe thought made me sick. I rolled over and pressed my face into the pillow. The worst part was the bond. Because every day, it got harder to hate him.He was there every morning in the training yard. He was patient when I fell. He brought me books from the library when he noticed I was bored. Once, he found me crying in the garden, and he didn't say anything at all. He just sat down on the bench beside me, a little way off, and stayed there until I stopped. And every night, I could feel him through the bond, on the other side of the wall. Restless. Worried. Wondering why I had gone so cold. Why I wouldn't meet his eyes anymore. Why I flinched when he touched my arm.He asked me once. "Did I do something wrong?"I couldn't tell him. I couldn't tell him anything. So I made a choice. They both had to pay. Silas and Kade. For my mother. For little Sam. For all twenty-three graves in that field behind the church. But I couldn't speak. I couldn't write. So I needed somethi

Chapter 17ELENAA week passed. My body healed faster than any human body should. The stab wound closed into a pink line. The black lines of poison faded, then vanished, until the skin on my side was smooth and pale again. Hilda said it was the bond. Kade's healing pouring into me, day and night, like a river that never stopped.I tried not to think about that.I tried not to think about a lot of things.Life in the pack was strange. After the ring, things had changed. Not all the way, but some. A few of the younger wolves nodded to me in the halls now. One of the cooks, a round-faced woman named Bess, started saving me warm bread with honey in the mornings. A little girl with a gap in her teeth followed me around the garden for a whole afternoon and asked if it was true I beat Vera with only a tiny knife."It's true," I told her."Were you scared?""Very."She thought about that for a long time. Then she said, "My mama says being scared and doing it anyway is the bravest kind," and r

I was screaming as hard as I had ever screamed in my life, but the room was completely silent.I grabbed my throat with both hands. Panic crashed through me like a wave."There," Silas said gently. "That's better."I tried again. His name. Just his name. Silas. I pushed it up from my chest with everything I had.Silence.I tried to say help. I tried to say Kade. I tried to say fire.Nothing.Silas walked over to the table. He picked up a small piece of paper and a stick of charcoal that Hilda used for writing labels on her jars. He held them out to me."Go on," he said. "Try."I snatched them from his hand. I pressed the paper flat against the table and held the charcoal over it. I was going to write it. I was going to write his name in big black letters and show it to everyone in this house.S.That was all I had to write. Just the first letter. My hand wouldn't move.It hung over
