Erin’s POV

For the next few weeks, I did exactly what Dr. Sasha told me to do.

I changed everything I ate, checking every meal twice to make sure I was getting enough protein, vitamins, and anything else that could help our pup grow.

Carlos kept his promise too.

He actually cooked.

Not well at first.

The first meal was so salty I nearly spat it back onto the plate, and the look on his face when he tasted his own food made me laugh until my stomach hurt.

But he kept trying.

And somehow, between

Erin’s POVThe cold from the bathroom floor bit into my knees. I didn’t know how long I’d been here for. All I knew was that Carlos hadn’t come back.He was probably still downstairs.Talking to her.My head rested against my arms around the toilet. I had nothing left to throw up, but my stomach still cramped every few minutes like my body hadn’t worked that out yet.My stomach jumped. My body leaning forward as I heaved up nothing.I shut my eyes, pressing my forehead back against my arms. How could I have been so stupid?‘Erin,’ Blue growled. She’d been quiet for so long, her voice made me jump. ‘He’s coming.’A soft knock against the bathroom door a second later.“Erin?”I didn’t move.“Are you okay?” The bathroom door handle moved. “Erin!”I was glad there was a door between us. “My stomach’s upset.”The handle moved.“Don’t.” I swallowed. “I don’t want you seeing me like this.”“Do you need me to call Dr. Sasha?”“No.”I didn’t need a doctor.I needed my husband to stop fucking ar

Erin’s POV“Carlos…” I mumbled in my sleep. My hand reached out to him. My fingers brushed over cold sheets. I opened my eyes, staring at the empty space beside me.Carlos wasn’t there.I reached out again, like somehow I had missed him the first time.Nothing.Where was he?The sheets were cold. How long had he been gone?I pushed myself up too fast, panic rushing through me before I could stop it. Both hands flew straight to my stomach. The baby.I pressed my palms over the curve of my belly, holding my breath.Nothing.My heart started pounding harder.“Please.”I rubbed my stomach gently, waiting. Then a small flutter moved in my stomach.I let out a shaky breath.I looked back at Carlos’s side of the bed. The room was dark, the bathroom light off.“Carlos?”No answer.Blue stirred inside me.‘Where is he?’‘I don’t know.’I looked towards the door.He had been here when I fell asleep. I remembered his hand resting over my stomach, his fingers moving through my hair while the tabl

Erin’s POVI felt sick as Dr. Sasha walked through the door, pushing the machine into my room, a smile plastered across her face.Dr. Sasha had called this morning, changing my appointment to a home visit, which couldn’t be good.If Carlos hadn’t been sitting next to me, holding my hand, I would have got up and run away.Yesterday, I had been desperate for answers.Today, I was terrified of getting them.Carlos and the doctor started talking around me, but their voices sounded far away. My eyes went straight to the screen.Goddess, please give me something.Dr. Sasha pressed the probe to my stomach.I held my breath. The screen flickered, grey shapes shifting until our pup came into view.I bit down on the sides of my cheek. Even I could tell nothing had changed.I looked away, tears burning behind my eyes.It had only been a day; of course he hadn’t grown.Dr. Sasha sighed. “I’m sorry.”The room began to spin.“He’s only the size of a pup, just a month’s gestation.”No.No, no.“Chec

Erin’s POVOver the next few weeks, Carlos kept his word.At first, I didn’t trust it. Every evening, when the clock crept closer to dinner, I found myself listening for the front door, already preparing for another message saying he was stuck with pack business. But the messages never came.Carlos did, though. He came home on time, sometimes even earlier than I expected, and instead of disappearing into his office after dinner, he stayed with me.At first, I kept waiting for something to change. For his phone to ring or for him to become distant again. But weeks passed, and nothing happened. He started taking walks with me after dinner, slowing his steps whenever I got tired, even though I wasn’t even showing yet.One afternoon, I found three pregnancy books sitting on his desk beside his pack paperwork.A tiny blanket.A packet of bottles. Then he held up a pair of white socks that were so small they barely covered the palm of his hand.I stared at them.“Carlos, our baby isn’t even

Erin’s POV“Erin, you can’t be serious.” Carlos stared at me like he couldn’t believe what I had said. “Nothing happened. I didn’t sleep with her. I promise.”I wanted to believe him.Goddess, part of me still desperately wanted to believe every word that came out of his mouth.I wanted to reach for that promise and hold onto it until everything I had heard tonight disappeared. Until Julia was nothing more than a name from his past again. But she wasn’t anymore. She had somehow found her way into my marriage without me even knowing. And Carlos had let her.But I was tired. Not the kind of tired Mum had thought I was earlier because I was pregnant.I was tired of Carlos.Tired of having to search his face for lies when he was supposed to be the one person in this world I never had to doubt.I was tired of feeling that horrible drop in my stomach every time something didn’t make sense. Before tonight, I had never realised how exhausting it was to doubt the person you loved.“I’m tired.”
