MasukSelena sat in the passenger seat of her mother’s car as they drove home. Her heart was heavy, and shame burned through her. She couldn’t even bring herself to look at her mother.
She could feel the disappointment radiating from the older woman, could sense the quiet anger and blame. Her mother didn’t have to say anything…Selena already knew she held her responsible for what had happened. And she was right. It was all her fault. If she had just gotten her emotions under control and treated Elijah better, none of this would have happened. But it had, and there was nothing she could do about it now. “What happened? Why did he just snap and throw you out? Elijah’s a pretty calm person,” her mother said, her tone a mix of disbelief and frustration. Selena let out a faint scoff. “No, he is,” she admitted softly, still staring out the window. “He truly is. But, Mom, I’ve told you…I don’t have feelings for him. How am I supposed to stay with someone I don’t love for the rest of my life?” Her mother glanced at her briefly before focusing back on the road, a deep frown forming on her face. After a few long seconds, the woman spoke. “You learn to love people, Selena. It’s not always like in the movies or in books. This is real life. That kind of love rarely exists.” “But…” “No.” Her mother’s voice rose slightly, and her grip on the steering wheel tightened until her knuckles turned white. “You had it all, my daughter. You had it all. We are omegas…opportunities like that never come our way. We’re at the bottom of the social ladder, and people are often disgusted by us.” She shook her head, her voice heavy with disappointment. “But you found someone who saw you for who you really are instead of your social status. Someone who’s rich, well-known, kind, and patient…and you threw that away because of a feeling?” Selena couldn’t deny it…her mother made sense. The more she thought about it, the more she realized she had truly messed up. “Do you think it’s too late?” she asked quietly. “Do you think he would take me back?” “Well, he better,” her mother replied sharply. “Because we need his help. You know how your sister gets sick so quickly, how bad things get when her health declines. Looking at things, you have a day or two to fix this with him. Maybe less.” Selena swallowed hard, her heart skipping a beat at the thought of her sister falling deathly ill again, and this time without Elijah’s help or connections. Lily could die. And it would be her fault. She would never forgive herself. The rest of the car ride was silent. Neither of them spoke. The weight of everything hung between them until they finally reached the house. Selena unfastened her seatbelt and stepped out after her mother parked. She walked toward the house and rang the doorbell. “I have work in a few minutes, so I can’t stay,” her mother said briskly. “Your sister is inside. I didn’t send her to school because of her health. Watch over her, and in the meantime, you better call Elijah a million times and fix things with him.” She narrowed her eyes before turning to leave. “What about my things?” Selena asked as her mother started the engine of the vehicle. “You have some of your old clothes inside. Use them. When I come back, you can get the rest from the car.” With that, she drove away. Selena sighed deeply and rang the doorbell again. A moment later, Lily opened the door with a bright smile. “You’re back!” she said cheerfully, rushing forward to hug her tightly. “I’ve missed you so much!” Selena hugged her back, warmth filling her chest. But as soon as they pulled apart, worry replaced that warmth. Lily was thinner, paler, and weaker. Her mother had said they had a day or two before needing to take Lily to the hospital, but looking at her now, Selena feared they had far less. The realization terrified her. They didn’t have health insurance, most omegas didn’t. That privilege was reserved for the powerful and wealthy. And Lily’s treatments were beyond expensive. “How do you feel?” Selena asked gently. “I’m just a bit tired,” Lily replied with a small smile. “But I’m okay.” Even her voice sounded weak. “Alright,” Selena said softly, kissing her forehead before leading her inside. She took a long shower and changed into some of her old clothes before heading to the kitchen to prepare a meal. Her mother wouldn’t be home until late, probably close to midnight. She worked two jobs and had once thought about quitting since Elijah had been helping them. But now that Selena had ruined things, that dream was gone. At least until she made things right with him. She cooked porridge, fried eggs, and bacon: Lily’s favorites. The girl never got tired of them, and honestly, Selena had grown to love them too. “Selena?” Lily’s voice broke through her thoughts. Selena turned off the burner under the eggs and lowered the heat on the porridge before giving her sister her full attention. “Dad says he wants to take me somewhere,” Lily said quietly. Selena furrowed her brows and gave her a small, confused smile. She knelt beside her and spoke softly. “Lily, you know Dad isn’t with us anymore.” “But…” Lily began but suddenly stopped. Her face went pale, paler than before, and then she collapsed to the floor with a dull thud. Panic surged through Selena as she rushed to her sister’s side. She caught her limp body in her arms, heart racing. She had been through this before. Lily fainting wasn’t new, but it didn’t make it any less terrifying. She knew what to do, but she also knew she had to act fast. She needed to keep her breathing steady until they reached the hospital. If she didn’t, Lily might die.The goddess helped Selena to her feet, and although she felt much better now. She still could feel as if the pain that was on her chest was still sitting there. But it was not actually there, it was just ghost pain.“We need to talk,” She said to the powerful entity. The Moon goddess could have taken any form, but she had chosen one that she felt would seem more pleasant in the eyes of the omega. She knew that her true form could kill the she-wolf. “Walk with me,” she said as she led the way.The more they walked, the more the environment changed. The scenery no longer belonged to a football stadium anymore, it was now a lovely field of wild flowers. The sky was perfect, and the sun was looking down at them while letting down a delicate kind of heat. It looked a day that any fairy tale book would describe. That’s how perfect it all was.But Selena knew that nothing really was. She knew that her life at the moment was beyond crappy. She knew that she was as depressed and wanted to give
Selena left the room with her heart feeling like it was being stabbed by a thousand knives at the same time. She felt nauseous; like throwing up but could not. She made her way back to her mom’s, in the room that she had left before she had gone over to her sister’s. When back, she saw that the woman was not alone. A nurse was there with her and she had some papers in her hand, and a pen.“Wait, what are you doing?” Selena asked, her heart clenching at the thought of what may have been happening. “Selena…” the woman looked up at her and they locked eyes. Tears made her eyes look glossy, and when she spoke, her voice was shaky. “They just told me that I could sign these, and Lily would be taken off the machines. She’s not there anymore, baby. She’s already gone.”“She’s right, ma’am. Your sister is long gone. It’s just a body that’s being kept alive by those machines,” the nurse joined the conversation. “She can be a help to people who need organs. She can be an organ donor.”“I swea
Selena was taken to the room her sister was in. She wished her mom would have come with her, but the woman explained that she couldn’t bear looking at the little girl at the moment; that maybe later, but just not right now.The omega understood, though. She could not imagine how hard this must have been for her mother. And she only wished she knew how to fix this. But the truth was that she didn’t.She walked into the room and closed the door once she was inside. Alone with the girl, the beeps of the machine connected to her was all that Selena could hear. She was used to hearing this machine, considering the little girl had spent most of her years in hospital rooms. It still did not make it right that Lily had to lose her life. She made her way towards the bed, her heart so heavy and breathing labored. She sat next to the girl, and it looked like Lily was only sleeping. It didn’t look like she was brain dead or anything. She looked just fine. Her skin was not pale or anything like t
Selena felt like her feet had been cemented to the floor of the lobby as she stood there. Everyone was staring in the direction of the woman crying, including her.At first, she could not see her mother. And even though she knew very well that it was the woman that was wailing, she wanted to believe otherwise. So she just waited, silently praying that another woman would walk from down the hallway. So yeah, she stood there…just waiting with bated breath as her heart raced in her chest. Then she finally saw what she was waiting for, she saw the woman being escorted in a comforting way by a nurse. And yes, it was definitely her mother. In that moment, she felt something warm slide down her face, and it was almost as if it was what was needed to free her feet from the floor. She rushed towards them and as soon as her mother saw her, the woman let go of the nurses and hugged her tightly, continuing to cry at the top of her lungs. The omega hugged her back, her heart still thumping in he
Back at home, Selena was alone in her room. The beta had tried to get her to get out so they could try to figure out what they were going to do next, but she was not having it.She just wanted to be alone. She just wanted to shut the world and everything out for a few hours. She just wanted to be able to wrap her head around everything that was happening. She has had heavy hearts before. In fact, there were more times than she could when her heart would be so heavy. But this time…it was much different. This time, she felt like the weight of everything in the entire universe was sitting right on her chest, stealing away her breath every few seconds. And she knew it would be just a matter of time until she would die.“He’s really dead,” she said to herself, sitting on the cold floor in the dark room. Her phone was not far from her, and it had been ringing for a while now. But she just could not bring herself to pick it up.She felt detached from reality. She felt alone. She felt defea
Alpha Maddox walked out of the room with a very heavy heart. He felt like he was stuck in a nightmare that he could wake up from. He felt like his entire world had caved in, and there was nothing that he could even do about it. He was never the type of person to admit that he was scared or anything like that, but he actually was. He was scared like crazy. He had killed someone. And the thought of it was enough to drive him crazy. He felt like he was losing his mind, he did not know how fast it was going to happen, but he knew that it was going to whether he liked it or not. There was no way that he was going to be sane or the same after he had lost his mother for the second time, and after finding out that he had killed someone. It was not like he hated Elijah even, he did not. And it was not like he had hurt the guy for doing something wrong, the guy was only trying to help the omega. The confusion was probably because of Malek’s plan. It had to all be part of it. Maddox hated ho
When the omega started walking away, Maddox stopped her by saying, “Selena, we’re not done here.” His voice was hard and filled with authority. “I am your alpha, and you can not walk away from me when I’m not done talking to you.” His heart burned in pain when he did this, because you see, he real
Selena allowed herself to be hugged by the alpha; it felt so good to be in his arms. It was obvious that he cared about her, and that made her heart do backflips. She really did care about him as well. He then pulled away, but still had his arms around her, though. Then he closed the small distanc
The room got quiet for a few seconds, and everyone seemed to be in their heads. Maddox’s mind was racing, and he was trying to figure out how he was going to save his pack while at the same time, he was thinking about how he was supposed to save the girl he had fallen in love with. He knew that S
Leon was now pacing the room as he waited, his phone still glued to his ear. He had told his friend at the hospital to double-check by going to the room that the omega had been in. He didn’t understand how the guy had told him that Selena had been discharged. If that was true, wouldn’t he or the a
