Chapter 4

ผู้เขียน: Arya
After I submitted my resignation through the family system, Moretti called me into the study.

I thought he had finally seen it.

But he brought up something else.

"Bella wants her own birthday this year."

"You two don't need to celebrate together."

I stood before his desk and nodded.

"All right."

Moretti looked up, as if my calm answer had surprised him.

After a pause, he took a box from the drawer.

"Your birthday gift."

I accepted it without opening it.

The box was so light I did not need to open it to know it was not the necklace he had studied so carefully.

When I left the study, a crowd had already gathered downstairs.

Bella stood at the center of it, the emerald necklace shining at her throat.

Under the lights, the stones were almost painful to look at.

Someone smiled.

"Bella looks like the princess of the Valtieri family."

Bella blushed and looked at me.

"Iris, what did you get?"

I opened the box.

Inside was a matching brooch.

Beautiful.

Perfect for her necklace.

I closed the box and handed it to her.

"Happy birthday."

Bella froze.

Moretti looked over too, his brows faintly drawn.

I said nothing.

On the night of the birthday banquet, the manor was filled with guests.

Most were Bella's friends, or people who wanted to please Moretti by pleasing her.

I stood at the top of the stairs and watched them circle around her, laughing and flattering.

For a moment, I remembered every shared birthday we had ever had.

I handled the guest list, the menu, and the security.

She stood in the candlelight and made the wish.

When the cake was pushed out, the hall fell quiet.

The name on it was not Bella.

It was Iris.

Bella's face went pale.

I stood beside the cake, my voice calm.

"Sorry."

"For years, Bella and I have shared a birthday."

"This year, I want mine back."

Whispers stirred through the hall.

Bella's eyes turned red almost instantly.

"Iris, are you still blaming me?"

Then she turned and ran.

Moretti's face went cold.

With one motion, he overturned the cake.

Cream splashed across the hem of my dress.

"Iris, Bella is your sister."

"You know how fragile she is. Why do you have to fight her over this?"

He looked at me, his disappointment cold and clear.

"When did you become like this?"

Then he went after her.

The crowd scattered quickly.

No one dared look at me for long.

I lowered my head and wiped at the cream on my skirt, but it would not come off.

In that moment, the last warm thing in me went cold.

So that was what he thought.

Wanting my own birthday back was me fighting her.

Wanting him to choose me once was me fighting her too.

Then my phone lit up.

The family system sent a notification.

【Underboss resignation approved.】

Approved by: Moretti.

He had not even read it.

At four in the morning, I left the manor with my suitcase.

The airport was bright and quiet.

When boarding was announced, I looked at my phone one last time.

No calls.

No messages.

Only a photo from Bella, sent half an hour earlier.

Moretti sat beside her, head lowered as he wiped her tears.

I turned off the screen and walked through the gate.

As the plane rolled onto the runway, a pale gray light spread along the horizon.

When the cabin door closed, I took off my underboss ring and slipped it into the pocket of the empty seat beside me.

Moretti, may we never meet again.

The day we signed the long-term Sicilian agreement, the weather was clear. The windows of the meeting hall were open, and the wind off the sea carried in the scent of salt. The old Don sat at the head of the table and watched me sign the final page."From today on, the Sicilian art line belongs to Iris Vale."Applause rose in the room.It was not loud.It was enough.Cesare stood beside me and handed over a silver access badge."This is not your escape route," he said quietly."It is your new position."I took the badge and ran my thumb over the engraved lines. It was cool.It was real. After the meeting, Moretti came.He stood outside the hall with the underboss ring in his hand. The ring I had left on the plane.Somehow, he had found his way back to it."Iris."His voice was hoarse."I brought it back."I looked at the ring.It had once meant my place in the Valtieri family. It had also meant the seven years I had spent walking beside him.Now it was only the past."No."I said it ge

In New York, Bella's mistakes could no longer be hidden. The port losses, the leaked shadow routes, the records of her private contact with intermediaries, all of it was placed before the elders.Bella sat in the meeting room with red eyes."I didn't mean to.""I only wanted to help Moretti."An elder's voice was cold."If you wanted to help him, you should have known whether you were capable of it.""When Iris was here, the ports never failed like this."At the sound of my name, Bella's expression shifted. She looked instinctively at Moretti. This time, he did not speak for her.He placed a doctor's report on the table."Your panic attacks are real.""So is the fact that you exaggerated them for years."Bella's lips trembled."You investigated me?"Moretti looked at her."I wanted to know how many times I left her behind because of you."The room went silent.Bella finally broke down."What was I supposed to do?""She was better than me at everything.""Father favored her. Moretti did not leave Sicily. He stayed at the estate arranged for him by the branch and tried to see me every day.I did not go.On the third night, Cesare knocked on my door."Someone is moving against Moretti."I looked up."Who?""The rival family from New York.""They know he came here for you. They want him dead on Sicilian ground."I closed the file in front of me."Where?"Cesare looked at me."You don't have to go.""I know."I stood and picked up my gun."But he can't die here."If he did, every deal I had just secured would turn into a problem.By the time we reached the docks, Moretti had already been shot.He was braced behind a stack of containers, pale but still firing back. When he saw me, his eyes lit."Iris."I did not answer.Cesare gave a silent order, and his men moved around the side.I circled from the other direction and took out the shooter on the high point.Gunfire cracked across the docks for nearly fifteen minutes. When it ended, Moretti was on one knee, no

When Moretti arrived in Sicily, I was attending an underground auction. That night I wore a black dress and sat beside Cesare. The hall was dim. When a waiter approached with wine, Cesare lifted one hand.He did not look at me.He only asked the waiter,"Who sent this?"The waiter's face changed.Cesare placed the glass back on the tray."Bring water."It was a small movement. No performance. No question afterward about whether I was afraid. He simply removed a possible danger before it reached me.Moretti stood not far away, and his expression turned ugly.Perhaps he finally remembered that I had not been born able to drink whatever glass was pushed into my hand.He had left me in that position for so long that even he had forgotten I should have been protected too. After the auction, Cesare gave us space. He did not interfere. He only waited at the far end of the corridor.Moretti looked at his back."Who is he?""The Consigliere of the Sicilian branch."My voice was calm."And my pa

【Are you coming back?】【I'm cold.】【Never mind. Stay with her.】The last one had been deleted. The deletion time was after Bella returned from the hospital. There was also the day I was injured at the port.I had sent him a photo of the wound. That same day, Bella claimed she was having an attack.Moretti went to her apartment.Later, he received only one message.【Iris said she's fine.】He had always thought I sent it.Now he knew it had been Bella.Luca stood in the study, his voice low."Don, Miss Vale was not fine many times.""She simply stopped saying so."Moretti gripped the phone until his knuckles blanched. He remembered too much at once.Me taking drinks for him in banquet halls.Me taking a bullet for him at the docks.Me sitting at his right hand, keeping the ugliest parts of his empire from touching him.And himself, saying again and again,Iris, you can handle it.It had never been trust. It had been habit. He had made a habit of putting me last. When Bella was called int

The first time Bella tried to handle the port line alone, she made a mess of it.She wanted to prove she was not only someone Moretti protected, so she contacted one of the intermediaries I had left behind. What she did not know was that the man answered to codes, not names. She sent him an old signal. He replied almost immediately.【Received.】Bella thought she had done it.At dawn, Luca rushed into the meeting room."Don, the East Dock shipment was intercepted.""They knew our emergency harbor."The room went dead quiet.Moretti turned to Bella. The coffee cup in her hand almost slipped."I was only trying to help.""I didn't know that code was dead."One of the elders went livid."You didn't know?""Then why did you touch a line Iris left behind?"Bella's eyes filled. She looked at Moretti."I just wanted you to stop thinking about her.""She's gone, but every day you're reading her files, checking her work, chasing after her calls.""I can help you too."Moretti did not soften. He

That night, the port partner hosted dinner.Bella was there at first. After too much wine, the partner let his hand brush over hers.Bella's eyes reddened immediately, and she stepped behind Moretti.Moretti's expression cooled, but he did not start a war at the table. He only called me over."Iris,

The next morning, Moretti pushed open the study door while I was still sorting through the port books. He had not changed out of last night's suit. There were faint red veins in his eyes."Nothing happened last night, did it?"He came to stand in front of me, his voice lower than usual."Bella was s

The wine in the banquet hall had gone cold. The rival family men were still seated at the far end of the long table, watching me with thin smiles."Still no Moretti?""Looks like he really did forget his underboss here."The burn in my stomach had not faded, but my mind was painfully clear.I ignore
