Chapter 4

“You are really good at escaping.” Sam heard Charles’s magnetic cold voice from behind.

“Huh?” She froze for a moment. ‘I will just get the financial statements.’ She wanted to say.

However, Charles suddenly grabbed her waist and turned her back into him. Her eyes widened in shock.

‘How did he get here in a flash?’ She thought.

“Your habit of running away is not good, Sam,” Charles whispered.

Sam felt his warm breath into her ears. She couldn’t react at the moment as her heartbeat ran so fast. Her body froze but her mind was telling her to hug the man that was just an inch from her.

“Why did you run away that day?” Charles asked solemnly.

Sam did not expect that he would ask this question all of a sudden. She was aware that he was referring to that day when he proposed to her. As she looked at his face with a dark expression, she instantly felt a cold sensation running down her spine.

Charles stared at her with his deep-set black eyes. Her face turned rosy-red from embarrassment.

Suddenly, there was a knock on the door.

‘Knock! Knock! Knock!’

Charles let go of her the moment he said come in. She walked straight to the door as she does not want to stay in that room any longer.

A beautiful fine looking woman entered, wearing a knee-length fitted black dress that complements her sexy body. She smiled brightly once she saw Charles.

“Hi, Charles! Did you miss me?

“Kelly, what brought you here?” Charles asked as he looked at Sam who was closing the door.

‘So she’s Kelly.’ She heard the familiar voice of the woman and she recalled that was the same voice he met in Z-Mall. They sounded intimate. She was saddened by the thought that she must be his new girlfriend.

Sam took the financial statements from their archive room. When she returned, Anne, Secretary of Charles, informed her that Charles has left and that they would continue their discussion tomorrow.

‘Sigh. How unprofessional.’ She felt annoyed by his sudden disappearance. Her face looked sour when she returned to her table.

Sam could not concentrate on her work after what happened. She still hears his voice asking her why did she run that day.

Time flies swiftly. It’s now time for her to go home. Her phone suddenly rang. She looked at the screen and saw an unfamiliar number.

“Hello, who is this?” She answered the call while she’s preparing to leave.

“Is this Samantha Wilson? The person on the other end of the line asked.

“Yes, may I know who’s this?”

“This is from ST Hospital, your mother is currently admitted here, her blood oxygen dropped due to an asthma attack.”

“W-whaat? She felt a lump in her throat due to the shocking news she heard. “Okay, I will go there as soon as possible.” She got her bag and left the office in a hurry. She’s waiting for a taxi but no available.

Suddenly, a car stopped in front of her. “Sam, I-“

“Henry, thank God I saw you. Can you take me to ST Hospital?” Then, she opened the door and got in.

Henry sensed that something might have happened so he immediately started the car as soon as Sam closed the door.

“What happened?” He glanced at Sam who looked pale at the moment.

“My mother was having an asthma attack.” She replied in a hoarse voice trying to control her emotions. She was very worried. Her mother has been suffering from asthma from time to time since she was young and she’s now 50 years old.

She does not know what to do if she lost her mother. She only has her mother and her younger brother, Richard. Her father died when she was in Grade 7.

After 30 minutes, they reached the hospital. “Thank you, Henry.” After that, she immediately got out of the car to see her mother. Henry parked the car before he followed Sam.

Her mother was asleep when she entered the ward while her brother was playing a game using his mobile phone. She called her brother earlier and asked him to go straight away to the hospital.

“What did the doctor say?” She asked her brother while she put her bag on the side table.

“The doctor said that she is now okay. They injected two steroids as the first one did not take effect. They took some tests and will be out after 2 hours.”

Her mother woke up. “Mom, how are you feeling?” She asked worriedly.

“I’m alright. You don’t need to worry.”

“Why would I not worry? You’re here again in the hospital. We all know that your illness is not that simple. My grandmother died-“

“Yes I know, I will be alright okay?” Her mother did not let her finish her sentence.

Knock! Knock!

Richard opened the door. It was Henry. He brought fresh fruits and soup.

“Good evening Auntie. How are you?”

Her mother knew Henry. She smiled when she saw him.

“I just need a little rest. Thank you for your concern."

“Henry I thought you had left already.” Sam was surprised to see him. “Thank you, you should not bother yourself.” She said while taking the fruits from him.

“These are not for you. These are for Auntie.” He said jokingly.

“Whatever!” Sam rolled her eyes while smiling.
