"Did you hear about those poor women?", Katy, my bestfriend, asked. We sat in the library of Linken County Community College. "Yeah. It's horrible", I answered softly, with a shutter. "I didn't think one murder would happen in this tiny little town, let alone three", she cringed.
I geniunely tried not to think about it considering that I live alone. I've always lived in Teela, however, my parents died six years ago. I have lived alone ever since. "Ame?", Katy whispered, attempting to draw my attention back to her.
"Hmm?", I hummed, looking at her. "You good?", she asked. "Yeah", I nodded, trying to act normal. "Okaaay...", she drug out. "On a different note, what do you want to do for your birthday?", she cheered up. Oh yeah. I completely forgot that my birthday was a little over a week from now.
I'll be twenty-six years old. You are probably asking yourself why a twenty-six year old is at a community college. Well, because we have the best trade program in the country. And after the remodels I have been doing on my parent's home, I learned that I have a knack for electrical work.
With my newly discovered interest, I realized that I could make an excellent career from it. When my parents passed away, they left enough that I could go to college to be anything I wanted. I decided to stay though, take care of the house they left me.
"Amelia? Seriously?", Katy snapped, tired of waiting for me to respond. "I'm sorry, Kat. I really don't know. The anniversary of my parents' death in in just a few days. You know that I haven't really celebrated since then", I sighed, gathering my books together.
"Where are you going?", she asked, slightly panicked. "Home. It's late. I'm hungry and tired. And we have mid-term tomorrow", I answered. "Wait. Walk me home, please", she said, throwing her stuff into her bag. I chuckled, knowing she was going to want me to walk her home.
It was dark outside already. A chill wrapped around my arms, informing me that fall was near. "Damn daylight savings time", Katy cursed, as she tucked her cardigan closed. "You've been asking for the 'ber months. They are here", I teased. "Shut up, witch", she clapped back, crossing her arms and making me laugh.
Katy lived two houses down from the college, so it didn't take long to reach her house. "Text me when you get home, bitch", she said, hugging me before traveling the sidewalk to her front door. I waited until she was safely inside before I continued my journey. For me, it's approximately a fifteen minute walk home.
Unfortunately, my car isn't working right now. Otherwise, I'd be driving and it would only take five minutes to get home, if that. But, luckily it isn't a far walk. The only mechanic in town is backed up for a few months. So, because I don't want to put money out for a new car or a rental, this is waht I've resorted to.
About five minutes into my walk, a chill ran up my spine. I felt as if I was being watched. Katy's voice echoed in my head about the three women who were murdered. They weren't just murdered, though. They were brutually raped and beaten to death.
Whoever was doing it was not using a weapon, only his hands.
A noise in the distance behind me had my ears perking and the hairs on the back of my neck standing up. 'Call for help', my inner voice spoke clearly. I pulled my phone close to my chest and dialed 911. I didn't have to look behind me to know that someone was there.
I could hear their faint footsteps. I knew I had to be quiet to not alert the person to what I was doing. "911, what's your emergency?", the operator spoke loudly through my earphones. I turned the volume down so I could still listen for the steps. "My name is Amelia June. I am on main street alone and someone is following me. Can you send a deputy to me?", I whispered.
"Where on main street?", she asked. "Five minutes, walking distance, north of the college", I answered. I must have spoken too loud because I heard heavy, fast-falling footsteps coming towards me. By the time I turned around, a heavy figure was colliding into my body.
We both hit the ground with a grunt. "Ma'am?", the dispatcher spoke. "Get off me", I yelled, as I tried to block flailing arms.
Amelia's POV"Did you enjoy the show, princess?", he winked. Without thought, I drew my fist back and clocked him in the jaw. "Put your fucking shirt on, or you can fucking go home", I hissed, as he stumbled backwards and clutched his face. "You just going to let her do that, Chief?", he asked, looking up at Jaxon in disbelief. "I don't know what you are talking about", Jaxon's voice was void of emotion. I pushed past Nate, shouldering him out of the way. I went to the kitchen and started pulling a meat out to cook."Amelia", Jaxon said, walking up behind me. "I know. I need therapy", I said, placing a frying pan on the stove. "Actually, I was going to say that was a good jab. But your form needs some work", he voiced. I turned around, catching sight of his panty-melting smirk. "How?", I asked curiously. "Put 'em up", he instructed, holding his fist up. I did the same. "Swing", he commanded. "What?", I questioned, confused. "You heard me. Swing", he reiterated, raising his brows at
Amelia's POVJaxon scanned the parking lot one last time as he opened the passenger door for me. He shielded me as I got into the seat, and slyly locked the door as shut it. Safely in the vehicle I looked around to see if I could spot anything out of the oridinary. I was so focused on looking around that it scared me when Jaxon opened the driver's door. "Just me", he assured me. He locked the doors a second time, once he was settled. He placed his gun on his leg as he started the SUV and put it in gear. "Are you alright?", he asked. My anxiety was high, causing visible reactions out of me. "Yeah", I lied, not wanting to burden him farther. The man is already ensuring I make it to and from work safely. He's going above and beyond to guarentee my safety and make sure I feel safe. I kept my eyes out the window, but I could feel his gaze drifting back to me. Every time he would look over at me, my body would warm up. "I know this is stressful", he uttered soothingly. "But, it too shall
Amelia's POVI made my way to my tables to check on my guests. Mrs. Burch had me covered though. She kept my customers happy while I was pulled away. I walked back to the counter as Jaxon was coming out of the back. He gently touched my side as he stopped next to me. "I'll bring this back when I come to pick you up", he whispered, holding the phone in my view. "Okay", I nodded. The diner closed at 8, but I was scheduled till 9 so that I could help close the restaurant down. "Are you okay, dear?", Mrs. Burch asked, concernedly, as I washed dishes. "Yes ma'am. Just a little distracted", I mustered her a gentle smile. "That's understandable. But, don't let it make you forget to live the life you have been blessed with", she spoke with love and wisdom. "I'll try", I assured her. "You're ride is here", she smirked, nodding at the door. I looked behind me to see the Chief waving to be let in. I walked over to the door and unlocked it. "You're early", I greeted him. He looked at me confuse
Amelia's POVI was shaking as I stepped through the threshold. The dread almost unbearable. Jaxon closed the door behind him, and faced me. "Have you got any messages or calls today?", he asked. I crinkled my eyebrows in concentration as I patted myself down. "Honestly, I don't think I've looked at my phone all day", I answered, realizing that it wasn't in my pockets. I pulled my bag out of it's hiding spot and set it on the desk. I searched the bag, finding my phone in the bottom. I felt Jaxon's presence move closer, as I opened it up. I had two unread messages from an unknown number. My heart accerlared in fear. One message was a picture of Kayla's bloodied, mangled body. Written on her stomach in blood were the words 'ASK MY GIRL'. The second message read. 'I want to see you dance on her grave. No one gets to maim you, that's my job'.I pushed the phone into Jaxon's chest, as I grabbed the trash can to relieve my stomach of it's contents. He rubbed his hand soothingly on my back
Amelia's POV"I'm ready", I said, facing Jaxon. He nodded his head, still staring at me in a trance. I smiled as I took a step towards him. "Jaxon", I uttered softly. "Of course, yes", he said, shaking his head. "When did he get out?" I asked, as Jaxon opened my door. He shook his head with a grim expression. "I'm not sure. But I'll find out", he assured me. "Buckle up", he instructed, closing my door, and walking around the vehicle. "Amelia, a protective order is just a piece of paper", he sighed, putting his seat belt on. I didn't respond because I knew where this conversation was headed. "I don't know how long he will be in there this time. It's not up to me, it's up to a judge. If it was up to me, he would be in prison for life, for what he did to you", he said, peering over at me. My anxiety spiked and I started bouncing my leg. An action that didn't go unnoticed by Jaxon for a second. "Amelia", his voice softened. "I hear you, okay. I don't know what you want me to do", I sna
Amelia's POVI went to my room to get dressed. I was quick about throwing my uniform on. I heard chatter coming from downstairs. Katy and Jaxon were talking. When I walked downstairs, I was still putting my apron on and pulling my hair into a bun. I found Jaxon and Katy in the garage. Jaxon was admiring my partial painting. "You like it? I think it'll be the tv wall", I said, making them turn around and look at me. Jaxon's eyes slowly raked down my form before his gaze came back up to mine. "It's stunning", he uttered, not breaking eye contact. I had a weird feeling that he wasn't talking about my painting, and a blush crept up my cheeks."Thank you", I smiled, hoping he was talking about the painting. "Ames, let me do your makeup. We will cover that bruise", Katy said, taking my arm and leading me to the kitchen. "Kat, it's okay, really", I protested, attempting to get out of it."Yeah, yeah. You can tell me how much you hate make-up after your shift", she waved me off. "Ugh, Kat, r
