Chapter 3: Wait. You knew about the murders?

Amelia's POV

I pulled one arm from the blanket and buckled myself in. "EMT highly recommended that you go to the hospital", he chatted, as he got into the driver's seat. "I know", I muttered, curling my arms tighter around myself.

"Do you have an extra shirt?", I asked with hope. "I do. But, forensics need photos of you before you change, okay?", he explained gently. I nodded as I leaned my head against the window. The ride to the station was quiet, though I felt his eyes travel to me in concern, many times.

I was completely zoned out when we arrived at the station. I came to, as Chief Knight opened my door for me. "Thank you", I whispered, nodding my head at him. I could feel the intensity of his gaze on me as he followed me in.

I stopped once inside, unaware of where to go next. His large hand touched the small of my back, sending a wave of comfort through me. "Right this way", he uttered tenderly in my ear. I followed his lead, finding my way to a door that said 'Interview Room'

"We will send a female forensics specialist in to take the photos", he informed me, holding the door open for me. "I don't think it matters at this point. It's all being recorded", I said, pointing at the sign on the wall. "I figured you would be more comfortable if a male wasn't present", he said, gauging my facial features.

"Nothing about this is comfortable", I sighed, walking over to the table and sitting down. He followed suit, and sat across from me. "I know. I am sorry this happened to you", he muttered, remorsefully.

"Can you tell me what you remember?", he asked, resting his elbows on the table. He gave the impression that he would listen, and believe. And honestly, in a situation like this, that's all a woman asks for.

"I walked my friend home from the college library, and took the most straight forward path home. Maybe five minutes into my walk I got a strange feeling of being watched", I was interrupted by a knock on the door.

The forensic specialist entered the room with a case. "Miss June, I am Cynthia. I am here to document your injuries. Did you fight back?", she questioned, setting her case on the table and opening it. Inside was an array of evidence collecting tools and a professional camera.

"Yes", I answered, looking over the items in her case, taking it all in. "Don't be overwhelmed. I won't be using all of this on you", she smiled lightly. I made eye contact with the Chief. He was studying my every move, and response.

"Need you to step out now, Chief", Cynthia said, pulling out what she needed. Chief Knight stood from his chair without incident and prepared to leave. "No, wait", I said, surprising them both. "Are you sure?", Cynthia confirmed, looking at me with skepticism.

"Yes. I was in the middle of telling him what happened. I don't want to forget where I was", I explained. "I will remember where you were", he assured me. I shook my head. "I want to get this over with", I said. I could see the reluctance in his face as he took his seat.

"You remember feeling as if you were being watched", he recited, to refresh my memory. "Right. I had my headphones in, but no music playing. So, I could hear what was going on around me", I said, moving to stand for pictures.

I removed the blanket, revealing the shred left of my shirt, and the already forming bruises. "I could hear footsteps in the distance. I started thinking about the three women who were... murdered", I paused to take a breath.

I kept my eyes on what Cynthia was doing for majority of the time I spoke, only looking at the Chief periodically. "Wait. You knew about the murders?", he stopped me. "Yes", I nodded. "And you still walked home by yourself?", he growled in question.

"I don't have much of a choice, Chief. My car is broke down at the moment", I defended myself, this time locking in on his solid gaze. He closed his eyes and inhaled deeply to hold his composure. "Damn. Never seen the Chief get this heated before", Cynthia attempted to whisper to me.

I say attempted because the Chief still heard her. "Take the shirt as evidence too, Valeo", he growled. She stiffened as her eyes grew wide. "Yes, Chief", she yelped.

Amelia's POVJaxon looked through the peephole before sighing with relief. "It's one of my men", he assured me. He unlocked the door and opened it, keeping his weapon at his side. "Chief, got a minute?", the officer asked. Jaxon holstered his weapon and stepped aside to let him in. I walked back to the stove to give them some privacy. Though, I could still hear their entire conversation. "One of the neighbors reported a suspicious vehicle driving slowly up and down the road", the officer said. "Did they get a license plate number?", Jaxon asked. "No, but we got a description", the voices grew louder, as Jaxon led them into the kitchen. "Miss June", the officer greeted me. "Amelia, this is my Sergeant, Steven Hughes", Jaxon introduced. "Nice to meet you", I nodded, feeling like a fish out of water. "The decription", Jaxon prompted. "Oh, it's a red or maroon, four door SUV, maybe a Jeep", Sergeant Hughes answered. "See if anyone has any doorbell footage of it. It's a start", Jaxon del

Amelia's POV"Did you enjoy the show, princess?", he winked. Without thought, I drew my fist back and clocked him in the jaw. "Put your fucking shirt on, or you can fucking go home", I hissed, as he stumbled backwards and clutched his face. "You just going to let her do that, Chief?", he asked, looking up at Jaxon in disbelief. "I don't know what you are talking about", Jaxon's voice was void of emotion. I pushed past Nate, shouldering him out of the way. I went to the kitchen and started pulling a meat out to cook."Amelia", Jaxon said, walking up behind me. "I know. I need therapy", I said, placing a frying pan on the stove. "Actually, I was going to say that was a good jab. But your form needs some work", he voiced. I turned around, catching sight of his panty-melting smirk. "How?", I asked curiously. "Put 'em up", he instructed, holding his fist up. I did the same. "Swing", he commanded. "What?", I questioned, confused. "You heard me. Swing", he reiterated, raising his brows at

  • The Only Survivor   Chapter 17: I'm down to eat

Amelia's POVJaxon scanned the parking lot one last time as he opened the passenger door for me. He shielded me as I got into the seat, and slyly locked the door as shut it. Safely in the vehicle I looked around to see if I could spot anything out of the oridinary. I was so focused on looking around that it scared me when Jaxon opened the driver's door. "Just me", he assured me. He locked the doors a second time, once he was settled. He placed his gun on his leg as he started the SUV and put it in gear. "Are you alright?", he asked. My anxiety was high, causing visible reactions out of me. "Yeah", I lied, not wanting to burden him farther. The man is already ensuring I make it to and from work safely. He's going above and beyond to guarentee my safety and make sure I feel safe. I kept my eyes out the window, but I could feel his gaze drifting back to me. Every time he would look over at me, my body would warm up. "I know this is stressful", he uttered soothingly. "But, it too shall

  • The Only Survivor   Chapter 16: I think he's near

Amelia's POVI made my way to my tables to check on my guests. Mrs. Burch had me covered though. She kept my customers happy while I was pulled away. I walked back to the counter as Jaxon was coming out of the back. He gently touched my side as he stopped next to me. "I'll bring this back when I come to pick you up", he whispered, holding the phone in my view. "Okay", I nodded. The diner closed at 8, but I was scheduled till 9 so that I could help close the restaurant down. "Are you okay, dear?", Mrs. Burch asked, concernedly, as I washed dishes. "Yes ma'am. Just a little distracted", I mustered her a gentle smile. "That's understandable. But, don't let it make you forget to live the life you have been blessed with", she spoke with love and wisdom. "I'll try", I assured her. "You're ride is here", she smirked, nodding at the door. I looked behind me to see the Chief waving to be let in. I walked over to the door and unlocked it. "You're early", I greeted him. He looked at me confuse

  • The Only Survivor   Chapter 15: Keep your head up, little one.

Amelia's POVI was shaking as I stepped through the threshold. The dread almost unbearable. Jaxon closed the door behind him, and faced me. "Have you got any messages or calls today?", he asked. I crinkled my eyebrows in concentration as I patted myself down. "Honestly, I don't think I've looked at my phone all day", I answered, realizing that it wasn't in my pockets. I pulled my bag out of it's hiding spot and set it on the desk. I searched the bag, finding my phone in the bottom. I felt Jaxon's presence move closer, as I opened it up. I had two unread messages from an unknown number. My heart accerlared in fear. One message was a picture of Kayla's bloodied, mangled body. Written on her stomach in blood were the words 'ASK MY GIRL'. The second message read. 'I want to see you dance on her grave. No one gets to maim you, that's my job'.I pushed the phone into Jaxon's chest, as I grabbed the trash can to relieve my stomach of it's contents. He rubbed his hand soothingly on my back

  • The Only Survivor   Chapter 14: What did I do?

Amelia's POV"I'm ready", I said, facing Jaxon. He nodded his head, still staring at me in a trance. I smiled as I took a step towards him. "Jaxon", I uttered softly. "Of course, yes", he said, shaking his head. "When did he get out?" I asked, as Jaxon opened my door. He shook his head with a grim expression. "I'm not sure. But I'll find out", he assured me. "Buckle up", he instructed, closing my door, and walking around the vehicle. "Amelia, a protective order is just a piece of paper", he sighed, putting his seat belt on. I didn't respond because I knew where this conversation was headed. "I don't know how long he will be in there this time. It's not up to me, it's up to a judge. If it was up to me, he would be in prison for life, for what he did to you", he said, peering over at me. My anxiety spiked and I started bouncing my leg. An action that didn't go unnoticed by Jaxon for a second. "Amelia", his voice softened. "I hear you, okay. I don't know what you want me to do", I sna
