Chapter 11: I Created A Problem

I’m in my private arcade room, throwing my second dart to the board.

“The People’s pack hasn’t given us a reply yet, do you think they’re ignoring our warnings on purpose?” Andrew, my best friend asks as he is shooting the hoops for points.

I shrugged, unbothered, “At least they know we have found them.”

“I don’t think they have given much thought about it if you ask me. They even held a wedding ceremony, I mean two weddings.”

I threw my third dart, hitting the thin ring area, “Chill Andrew, you don’t expect them to flee overnight. That is their home, let’s give them some time. I’m sure many of them are planning a way out.”

"Indeed they are planning a way out to take over humanity; we are becoming livestock for them.”

"Not all of them make food out of humans, Andrew. Don't spread it,” l argued with him.

"Sometimes l wonder whose side you are on. Humans or werewolves?"

"Andrew there is no need to choose sides, as long as we keep everybody safe we have successfully completed our mission."

"They don't have plans of keeping your kind safe, Seth. How many have been found dead in the last one month? How long did it take for us to locate their Pack?"

"We won't wait forever, we will go there tomorrow . Stop pestering me,” I continued playing, thinking about how my father and mother are doing. They had a clean up business in the West. 

To tell you the truth about me, being born in a family werewolves hunters; it feels like I was born in the wrong body. We are trained to kill wolves but I came up with an evacuation plan because I don’t believe in the justification of killing another kind. No one has the right to take another person's life or mistreat them all in the name of the new era, rebranding the country to a werewolves free state.

I have been killing different types of creatures for when I can't remember. Even though I do find some of them cute, I still kill them. Now the People’s pack is our next bus stop because all the data is pointing to them picking humans as their prey during a hunting session.

I have been given orders to burn it to the ground and all the government to take over the land as procedures. Being the only son to a long dedicated supernatural hunter is really not the life for me but I love what I do. Although I sometimes wish my parents were just ordinary people.

“Look at this,” Andrew throws a small envelope at me, “That is all the information we gathered the last few days on the People’s pack.”

“Alpha Gladys and Omega Bram?”

“Alpha Richard is quite a father, he has given out their hands in marriage in less than one month to two prominent figures. The latest being Omega Bram wedding Alpha Knight of the Southeast Pack.”

“Are you referring to the Knight we both know?”

“It is definitely him and he for some reason has merged the Southeast Pack with the People’s pack in a union. What do you think he is hoping to accomplish with that? You know how he is.”

“Actually, I’m not interested to know what he is thinking this time. This is the last mission my father has given me so I’m going to succeed and gain the freedom they have promised me.”

“So what do we do?” Andrew asks worriedly and I don’t have the time to reply as the telephone rings. I took a few steps to answer the call.

It was from my father, “Why is Alpha Richard still alive?"

I gripped the telephone tightly, “I will take care of him soon, father."

"I don't like you sleeping on things, Seth. The architectural work for the Prime Ambassador is ready. He needs that land to complete his hospital building projects, you know how important this mission is for you and me right? Don’t make mistakes, finish it up at once and return home."

" Yes, father,” He hangs up after talking as usual but I was more concerned about Knight merging the powerful pack with a small town of conservative wolves. I have heard a lot about him and his name is feared by many, including my family. I turn to Andrew, “It will take a long way to Southeast, we will deal with the mission at hand. Let’s get ready.”

“Sure.”

I stood in front of the mirror and refilled the redefined silver molten in my high-velocity Aq3D. It can cause damage by eighty percent. Several times I have fought my way out with it and it is a gun I treasure so much. My mother gave it to me on my eighteenth birthday. It has been with me for two years and I have never grown tired of it. Maybe because I love my mother so much, she has been talking to my father to let me choose a part for myself. So if I can complete this mission successfully I will quit being a hunter.

I will travel the world and heal from these wounds. Everytime I kill a wolf it seems I’m slaying my inner peace. A part of me aches so badly whenever I see their blood flow on the concrete. It makes my heart constrict with regret so I have to stop.

"We are ready to set out, Seth,” Andrew puts a jacket over my shoulders.

I nodded, “Thanks,” I stared at the mirror one last time, taking in my usual all black outfits with my hands in my pocket. My favorite Volkswagen Super Beetles was parked at the entrance, waiting for me. In a few hours I’m arriving at the People’s pack. I waited for two hours patiently for Alpha Richard to receive me.

“Good day, Mr Richard.”

“I’m identified as an Alpha, young man,” He is unamused by my presence, “To what do I owe this visit?”

“You already know why I’m here, Alpha,” I’m patient with him for no reason.

“If it’s about the land, I have no comment on it. Humans and greed are like vampires and blood. You all are the most unpredictable beings, you all are never satisfied no matter how much you get. This land belongs to me and the entirety of the People’s pack. Thirty years ago, you humans demanded that we wolves evacuate the city and we did. We fled from your city and began a new life in the deep woods, what is it to you lots now? We haven’t breached the contract.”

This is not my style at all, my mission is to kill him but here I am sitting with him, having a conversation with him, “I hate to agree with you, you are right, Alpha. But sadly, the government wants their property back.”

“And who is the government, son?”

My eyes widened at the name choice. I don’t know but it makes my heart flutter, “I don't know how this will come off to you but we humans, we believe in the government and we thank them greatly for their continuous exercise of authority, control and for being responsible for the direction and supervision of the public affairs. I don’t think you can say the same for wolves, we humans gave you all the freedom and we got nothing in return except turning us into livestocks. What rights do you have to ask me that question?”

“I have nothing to lose so nothing you say will change my mind. We wolves have been running for years, living our lives as if it is a crime. How about you learn from my son, he is as young as you, he has settled down and will soon bear children. How about you go back to your parents and learn something new?”

I let out a weak sigh, he has hit a sore spot in my heart and it hurts so much. It also feels nice to see a great mind who analyses the situations ahead. The problem right now is I’m feeling a familiar bond with this man and I feel very hesitant to kill him. I should be clashing my dagger against his claws but I’m already feeling bad at the thought of it. I do wish that this land of theirs be left alone, it looks peaceful and beautiful here, it feels like home. 

I wonder what the children would feel when they hear about their father’s demise. I gave Andrew a signal and immediately pointed my gun at Alpha Richard’s forehead. 

He is shocked but he immediately composes himself, “What can the both of you do to me? You are outnumbered, don’t make reckless decisions.”

“You think so?” I ask him tauntingly, knowing that before any operation we always get the layout of the Pack, the numbers, grading from the ranks. It’s so easy to surround them totally and the ceasing has already begun.

I think the Alpha receives a mind-link because his eyes go wide as he says, “You devil,” He sneers, “How dare you infiltrate my home?”

I laugh softly, remembering how my mother always teased me on how my looks are deceiving. She said I looked so calm and my aura is peaceful but I’m too hypocritical and I never understood what she meant until she saw me kill a girl I went on a blind date with because she drugged me into having sex with her.

She said I was a demon in a human’s body.

“You should be glad that Seth here doesn’t kill those who don't attack him and our mission is to clean the land. So this means you are free to pack your things and run,” Andrew informed him.

Alpha Richard lets out a loud laugh, “If you really want to wipe us out this is your opportunity to do so.”

I signal Andrew to leave us alone, in hopes that I can convince this man to run away but instead he blows a whistle with his lips and I noticed a girl dashing out of the back door.

“I thought you weren’t scared? Why are you sending your daughter through the back door?”

He smirks, “She is not my daughter.”

“I won’t go after her,” I shrugged, uninterested in whatever plans he has up his sleeves.

“You are so disrespectful and it is because you don’t know your place that is why you will fail in life,” He glares at me as if he is the one doing time the favor here.

“I didn’t mean to disrespect you, I’m only trying to help you here. All I’m offering for you to do is to take the remaining survivors and run, I won’t hurt, we just need the land.”

My words fall on deaf ears because he shifts into his wolf form, jumping over the table to attack me. I instantly stood up, kicking the chair behind me as I jumped backwards with my eyes closed as I shot at his right leg.

That only slowed him down for a few seconds.

“Why are you so stubborn?” He is more aggressive with his attack this time but I’m too trained for this. I kneeled down, sliding on the marble floor as he jumped towards me. I threw my gun to my left hand, aiming for his left eye as I pulled the trigger. He falls back, howling out in pain as his vision is taken from him, he limps trying to attack me again when I aim at the right eyes, blasting it. 

I blow the smoke off my barrel, my eyes dark, “Should I give you a name? Something like the Blind Wolf? No, maybe I should just kill you and end your pain. Let me think,” I begin to think but he is yelling in pain, trying to attack me at all costs.

“Since you are just going to scream I should end your pain. My ears are hurting, you know, we humans have sensitive ears too,” I spread my legs and stood over him as he was shifting back into his human wolf, I aimed between his eyes and pulled the trigger, ending his life instantly. I don’t know why but I kept shooting at his skull, his blood splashing on my trousers and face.

“That is enough, Seth,” Andrew grabs my shoulder, squeezing me to calm down, “It's over.”

I put my gun in the back of my trousers, “I guess my work here is done.”

“Are you okay?”

“Yeah.”

“Are you hurt anyway?”

“I’m fine, Andrew. Tell my parents I’m going to return home in four days.”

“So soon?” He stares at the corpse between my legs, “This is the man you wanted to protect a moment ago now his blood is pooling under your feet. Are you sure leaving this field of work is a good idea? You could become a blood addict.”

“You are no fun at all,” I tell my best friend, a sigh of relief leaving my throat, “Let’s drink tonight as a goodbye.”

“Are you sure this is what you really want, Seth?”

“I know what I want, Andrew and this life is not what I want so… let me take this chance.”

“Okay,” Andrew agreed and drove me back to my house, even though the ride was silent and gloomy. I couldn’t bring myself to be happy and it didn’t help that immediately I stepped my foot at the entrance of my door, an invitation letter was given to me by one of the guards.

“What is it?” Andrew is curious, “Read it.”

I threw the letter at him, “How about you read it since you’re so curious. I do not understand why people are still writing letters when we have home phones now.”

Sweat breaks out of Andrew’s forehead, his eyes wide, “This is an official invitation in your name, Seth.”

“I can see that, for what?”

“You should be asking from whom!”

I’m confused by his sudden restlessness, “Who is it?”

“Alpha Knight.”
