“Can you not ignore me?”
After spending a few moments to take a breath and let it out mindfully, Josh spoke again. His voice sounded clearly pleading. There was no longer any anger implied in his tone. His facial expression was also no longer filled with anger like before. Instead, his eyebrows were arched downwards, showing regret and pleading.
Like an impossibility, Josh had managed to erase the emotion etched on his face and suppress all the explosions that were still left inside him. He was still sober enough to stop all his behavior that could potentially escalate the situation between him and Ashley.
Although in reality, the situation between the two of them, it seemed like it was already very difficult to save.
Ashley sighed lightly.
She was indeed very surprised by Josh's anger that was poured out on her just moments ago. Because she was too shocked, she couldn't even react to it except to be stunned into silence.
Josh successfully made her mind and logic instantly stop and not function at all. Pushing her into a reverie and ending up in a daze.
But because Ashley had made up her mind very firmly to ignore whatever the man did or said, she was able to quickly regain her senses and remember what she had to do. She must not be provoked and retaliate with the same angry emotion, and must persist in ignoring.
Because before, when she reacted in a very normal way—angry, upset, and disappointed—like any sane human being in her difficult position, it still did not give her any solution. There was no fresh air let alone a way out that she could find. Instead, one problem after another that drained her heart and mind sprung up and only added to her burden.
“Then what exactly do you want? Want me to be warm to you?” Ashley asked, maintaining her flat face and tone of voice. “Do you want me to welcome you back happily? Do you want me to show my longing for your long absence? Or do you want me to ask with great curiosity how you've been?”
Josh closed his eyes deeply. It was as if Ashley's words just now sounded like sarcasm that tickled him very disturbingly.
“It doesn't have to come to that,” he emphasized, ”It's enough to just act normal as usual. We can't pretend we don't know each other every time we meet, right? It's uncomfortable.”
“So you are uncomfortable.” Ashley uttered her conclusion.
Meanwhile, Josh sighed a little harshly. There was a residue of impatience and annoyance that he couldn't get rid of completely and failed to cover up. And Ashley could catch the man's expression well.
“But I don't understand. What's it usually like? Like before we got married, when you pretended to be nice to me to cover up your lies? Or, like after marriage, when I find out everything and you pretend to be nice to me even more only to get me to play along in your charade?” Ashley's eyebrows arched up, implying her expression of curiosity. “Oh—or, like after coming back from Paris when you were blatantly cold to me?”
Josh's jaw hardened. His teeth were interlocked and a slight rattling sound could be heard from inside his mouth. He couldn't deny everything Ashley had said as if she had just handed him a large mirror so he could look in the mirror and clearly see his bad attitude and how their situation really looked.
But Josh couldn't just give in either. He had a very strong reason that caused them all to fall into this unfortunate situation.
“About after we got back from Paris, I was just annoyed that you were the first to be annoying to me. I know I went too far. But I really just want us to be nice to each other. Like two friends.”
Ashley snorted her laughter. “You think, me and you can do that? Under these circumstances? After all the mess you've made?”
“It might be hard, but—” Josh's sentence broke off on his own. Because he also didn't know how to continue either.
“Not just difficult. It's impossible,” Ashley was annoyed by the man's ridiculous request, but so far she had managed to keep her speech flat and emotionless. “You think I'm the one who came in and ruined your relationship with your girlfriend. But you're the one who clearly said you had no intention of refusing this marriage. You think that everyone is entangling you into a bond that you never wanted, and that it's causing you trouble. But did it ever cross your mind that none of this is easy for me either? Coupled with your relationship issues that you want to cover up, wouldn't it be more appropriate if I was the one trapped by the selfishness of all of you?”
Josh's forehead creased deeply. There was bitterness that slowly rose from his heart and clogged his throat.
“I know. I know you're struggling too.”
“No, you don't. You don't know exactly what I'm going through and how I feel.”
He knew exactly what Ashley was dealing with. Before, it was probably just a guess. Then after he found the girl's agreement with her parents, he understood why Ashley couldn't refuse their marriage either. But he couldn't just say that he had found the document and knew all of Ashley's secrets. Especially after what he had witnessed at the hospital the other day, about a woman that Ashley calls 'mom'.
Josh's hands rested on the kitchen table. His head was bowed with his eyes tightly closed again. Thinking very carefully about what he was about to say.
“Sharon tried to kill herself.”
Ashley instantly froze. She didn't know whether to believe the words she had just heard, or to ignore them and dismiss them as information she probably didn't need to know.
“She cut her veins and lost a lot of blood. She's very weak and needs a lot of time to recover. That's why I have to take care of her and can't go home,” Josh tried to explain as gently as possible.
The frown on Ashley's forehead deepened. She had a little trouble swallowing her own saliva when she heard that piece of explanation. Prejudice and worry somehow attacked her logic brutally.
She remembered that she had never interacted much with that girl. Even when they were in Paris, she only exchanged awkward greetings. There was no conversation. No tension. When they met again at the cafe by accident with her mother and Mrs. Go, there was also no interaction. It could be said that there was never a history that could be used as an excuse for her to be the cause of the girl hurting herself.
But was she really not the cause? What if her presence in between the girl and Josh's relationship was the real cause?
Ashley's eyes trembled. She asked with all her might to cover her worries and fears. “Why—why did she do it?”
“Can you not ignore me?”After spending a few moments to take a breath and let it out mindfully, Josh spoke again. His voice sounded clearly pleading. After blowing his heart and mind, Josh stood still and stunned. His consciousness seemed to drift suddenly. Like someone who just woke up from being possessed. His gaze towards Ashley became unfocused. The muscles of his eyes trembled from the outburst of tension as well as a reflection of regret that immediately hit him very hard.In front of him, Ashley was looking at him with a very shocked expression.Josh's body stiffened. Not merely because he was afraid of adding new wounds to the girl or because of his yelling and anger. But because he was confused about what else to do to make up for it. He had come home with the intention of clearing up any misunderstandings with Ashley's parents, as well as repairing—though perhaps only slightly—his complicated relationship with Ashley. But now he was successfully acting the opposite. Instead of being a kind and calm person, Josh has revealed a side of himself that Ashley shouldn't ever know about.Ashley's unorganized groceries, that wer
Josh frowned. He realized there was sarcasm hidden behind the girl's words even though the way of speaking caught by his ears had absolutely no hint of annoyance or anger. He didn't know what Ashley was really hiding. Either the girl was no longer angry because she knew the limits of their relationship. Or, she was completely ignoring him.Their relationship deteriorated after the trip from Paris. And it got worse when his accidental encounter with Ashley's mother happened. Then it got even worse when he broke the appointment with Ashley's parents, and didn't come back at all until today. Without giving any information.Josh did say that he had some business that required him to go out of town. But he couldn't even be sure whether Ashley believed him, or maybe not.Either way, the worst thing Josh had done was to lie and never give any news after that.“Are you angry? Because I didn't come home?”Ashley snorted with a laugh, “No.”Then the elevator doors in front of them opened.Ashle
After stopping by his parents' house to pick up the gift that his mother had prepared, Josh returned to his house. He was quite thankful that his mom was taking care of a charity so he didn't have to meet her. Tonight he needed to repair his reputation in front of Ashley's parents. And that would take up a lot of his energy and mind. Therefore, not meeting his own mother was a huge blessing for him. Because Josh could eliminate one cause of his confusion, and make his burden a little lighter.Josh was waiting for the elevator when Ashley walked up from behind him with the same destination. The girl looked a little surprised when Josh turned his head and made their eyes meet each other accidentally. It seems like Ashley didn't realize before that the figure standing in front of the elevator was Josh.Awkwardness suddenly ambushed the empty space between Ashley and Josh. Ashley looked away, and Josh still turned to look at her but with a confused feeling.Ashley didn't expect that she
Josh was true to his word to Sharon. That he would stay near her all the time.He didn't dare to go anywhere at all. Even when he needed to take a shower, he would choose a time when Sharon was sleeping. Even so, he still couldn't leave the girl for too long as he cleaned up as quickly as he could. Guilt and regret gnawed at his heart fiercely. Until his subconscious seemed to make him feel guilty if he relaxed his supervision of Sharon. His days during Sharon's stay in the hospital were spent only accompanying and caring for the girl. Josh left all work matters to his deputy and secretary completely without wanting to be disturbed or bothered. He didn't even think of contacting Ashley. His communication with Ashley completely stopped after the conversation on the phone when he asked for that girl’s help to pack his clothes.Anyone who knew this would definitely think that Josh was crazy. But the truth is that he was crazy. He couldn't forgive himself for almost taking the life of his
There was a brief moment of awkwardness before they ended their brief conversation.Josh knew he was guilty of not being able to keep the promise he had made. And Ashley was probably having a hard time yesterday to bear it all by herself without knowing why and what happened because Josh didn't inform her at all. But yesterday was really too difficult and complicated for him. He didn't even remember the lunch appointment with his mother-in-law until just a few moments ago when he saw Ashley's figure. The incident with Sharon had completely taken away all of his sanity. And it was all beyond his control. Clearly, at the moment, Josh still couldn't divide his mind to resolve what happened between him and Ashley. Because his heart and mind are still full of regret and guilt that feels very excruciating.Later. Later, when Sharon's condition was stable enough and the situation he was facing was calm again, he would try to explain it slowly to Ashley. He thought Ashley would understand be
At first, Josh thought he had misheard. But the distance between where Ashley was sitting and the door of the room was not far. And the room wasn't that big either. So it was enough to allow him to hear any sound that came from inside, even if it was a bit soft.Josh tilted his head again while looking through the clear glass on the door. From where he was, he could only see Ashley's back. The face and figure lying in front of the girl was covered by her body. But several medical machines and many cords that looked interconnected and hanging there were quite clearly visible. Also some of the little things the girl did—rubbing the face of the patient lying there, and adjusting the patient's clothes and blanket—could be clearly captured by his eyes. Ashley’s words that she spoke again could also be heard well by Josh's ears.“I know I shouldn't have complained to you. But now, no one can listen to me, Mom. In the past, there was Mrs. Go who was always the one I talked to about things. S
PRESENT DAY“Thank you Mr. Jung,” Josh took the small paper bag that his secretary handed him. This morning he realized that he had gone out yesterday without his cell phone. The panic that attacked him due to the incident with Sharon automatically blinded and dulled all his thoughts and common sense. The last time he held his cell phone was in his room before the meeting. He turned off the voice mode and put his cell phone in the drawer because he felt too dizzy to face Sharon. Little did he know that he would be forced to accept the enormous consequences of his actions.Regret still hung around, shaking, and terrorizing him until this moment. And he allowed himself to be gnawed by it. Because he thought he deserved to be tortured by the pain that was brutally punching him in his heart and head. Even if he punched himself physically for punishment, it felt like it wouldn't be enough to make up for what he had done. Josh would never be able to forgive himself. For if only, yesterday h
Ashley searched through tons of articles about her family, Josh's family, and what incidents had happened all this time.Ever since she was forced to return to Auckland, the pain in her heart made her not want to know anything about anything concerning her family. She seemed to leave everything behind. That's why she really didn't know anything. Her head was throbbing with pain when she finally ended her search and closed her phone. The news she had just gotten made her shoulders slump instantly. It was as if her energy and life had evaporated without a trace.Until a knock on her bedroom door finally woke Ashley up from her empty reverie."Miss, it's me. I brought you a snack."Mrs. Go's voice came from behind the door.“Yes, come in,” Ashley said, and the woman walked in.She walked over to Ashley who was sitting in front of her dressing table. She placed the tray she was carrying on the empty part of the table."You didn't come down for breakfast earlier. Mrs. Gu got nagged because
