Chapter 2

작가: Chelsea
Rhett stood outside the door, holding a gift box.

"Come out and eat."

I had barely slept all night. When I heard his voice, I did not even bother looking up.

He walked in and placed the box on the bed. Inside was a long black dress.

"The anniversary banquet is tonight. Representatives from every district will be there. Come with me."

I lowered my head and continued flipping through my book.

"What about Lauren?"

"Of course she's coming too. We'll make a public appearance together to show our support for her."

My fingers froze between the pages.

Lauren again.

Rhett walked over and took the book from my hands.

"Still angry?"

I raised my eyes to meet his.

"You locked me up all night yesterday. Was that supposed to make me feel better?"

"You were acting like that yesterday. What else was I supposed to do? Let you run around freely?"

He said it as though his decision had been perfectly reasonable. The next second, he bent down and wrapped his arms around me.

"All right. I'll make it up to you when we get back tonight."

I did not respond.

Rhett lowered his head and kissed the corner of my mouth, just as he always did after one of our arguments.

He probably believed that as long as he held me and kissed me, everything would go back to normal.

Keeping my expression stern, I said, "What if I simply refuse to go?"

Rhett paused.

"All right, be good. Once this is over, I'll get your mother's brooch back for you."

He gently stroked my cheek, his voice still warm and tender.

By evening, I had changed into the black dress after all.

The anniversary banquet was being held at the Wilson Family's old estate. When I entered with my arm linked through Rhett's, the hall was already packed.

"Boss."

"Donna."

People rose to greet us as we passed. Rhett rested a hand against the small of my back and guided me all the way to the head table.

As we passed the South District's section, I spotted the Guardia.

All 24 men were standing behind Lauren.

They had served under me for six years. No matter how chaotic a situation became, all it had ever taken was a glance from me for them to know what to do next.

Now, when they saw me, all they could do was bow their heads in accordance with family protocol.

"Donna."

Then they returned to their positions behind Lauren, who wore a smug smile.

The banquet had barely begun when a commotion broke out at the South District's table.

A Capo nearing 60 set his wineglass down.

Lauren had only recently taken over the South District, and tonight was her first official appearance at a family banquet as its leader. Yet when she approached the South District's table with a glass of wine, the man did not even bother to stand.

"When your father was alive, I respected him." The old man raised his eyes to look at her. "However, the South District isn't an inheritance that automatically belongs to whoever comes next. If you want me to take orders from you, you'll have to prove you're capable of leading."

The hall fell silent.

Lauren gripped her wineglass, her face paling.

Rhett sat at the head of the table without showing any anger. He simply raised a hand and beckoned to Lauren.

"Come here."

Everyone froze in surprise.

There were two seats beside Rhett, one on either side. According to Wilson Family tradition, Donna sat on his right, while the other seat was usually reserved for the heir.

Rhett and I had been married for seven years, but we had never had children, so that seat had remained empty all this time.

Tonight, however, Rhett signaled to a waiter in front of everyone and had him pull out the chair.

"Sit here."

The entire hall went utterly silent.

For one brief second, Lauren hesitated. Then overwhelming delight flooded her eyes.

This was practically a public declaration that Lauren stood on equal footing with Donna.

As she walked over, she shot me a smug look and curled her lips into a smile, as if to say, "You held that seat for seven years. I can take it from you whenever I want."

Once she sat down, a few people around the table exchanged knowing laughs.

Several guests raised their wineglasses and looked Lauren over with newfound interest. Even the Capo who had refused to stand a moment earlier seemed to change his mind.

Everyone understood what Rhett was telling them.

Whether Lauren had earned her position was one question. The fact that he personally protected her was another. With her seated in that chair, no one could continue treating her as a little girl who had risen through the ranks solely on the strength of her dead father's reputation.

Before long, the people who had been holding back began to rise one after another.

"Miss Lauren."

Wineglasses lifted around the room. Just like that, Lauren had established her authority.

I sat motionless beside Rhett, my fingers digging painfully into my palm beneath the table.

On the drive home, I remained silent. The luxurious interior of the car felt suffocatingly tense.

Rhett studied my profile and sighed. Then he reached over and pulled me against him.

"Nancy, about tonight... I didn't mean anything by it. I was just helping her save face."

I looked at him for several seconds, my eyes red, before finally turning away.

He probably thought he had managed to soothe me again. Satisfied, he kissed the top of my head.

What he did not know was that in just one more day, I would disappear without a trace.

The lawyer pushed the pen toward Rhett."All that remains is your signature."Rhett did not take it. His gaze remained fixed on the final page, his brows tightly furrowed."What if I refuse to sign?"The lawyer answered calmly. "She is prepared to proceed with litigation."Rhett looked up at me, his eyes bloodshot."Do you really have to go this far?""Yes."His lips pressed into a thin line, and a flicker of helpless embarrassment crossed his face. I did not rush him.Rhett lowered his eyes, his voice hoarse."I don't know what to do anymore."Hearing those words from him was so unfamiliar that I stared at him for a moment in surprise. His fingers pressed against the edge of the document, and his lashes gradually grew damp."That night in the basement... I went down there afterward. It was so cold inside."I said nothing. His eyes slowly reddened."I knew you were afraid, yet I still did that to you."I lowered my gaze and replied calmly, "That's all in the past."Rh

The next day, when I left the apartment, his car was still parked downstairs. It was there on the third day, too.On the fourth day, when I returned from the horse ranch, I found him standing by the roadside."Have you eaten?"I ignored him.He followed me."Nancy."I was beginning to lose patience."How long are you planning to stay here?"Rhett's expression stiffened."Until you agree to come home with me.""Then you can keep waiting."His expression darkened instantly, but unlike before, he did not order me to stop. That evening, I received a call from Matthew."Donna."I frowned."Don't call me that anymore."Matthew paused."Madam, the investigation into Lauren's accident is complete."My hand stopped at the rim of my cup."What happened?""The car was tampered with, but it was someone on her own team who did it. She also deliberately planted that access token in the car."I said nothing, so Matthew continued."She wanted the Boss to believe that someone was

A black sedan was parked outside my apartment building. When the car door opened, I stopped in my tracks.Rhett stepped out. It had only been a few days, but he had visibly lost weight, and faint dark circles shadowed his eyes."Nancy."I continued walking. He followed me."Come home with me."I stopped and turned to face him."You flew all the way here just to say that?"Rhett's brows knitted together."I've transferred the entire Guardia back to the estate. I've also revoked Lauren's authority. And I got your mother's brooch back for you. All right?"I shrugged."So?"His expression stiffened."What do you mean, 'so'?"I've done everything I can to put things back the way they were."Confusion crept into Rhett's voice."Now come home with me."I stared at him, unable to stop the bitter smile tugging at my lips. His expression immediately darkened."What is it this time?""Put things back the way they were," I repeated. "And then what?"Rhett's gaze grew colder b

There was a brief silence on the other end of the line. Rhett probably had not expected me to respond so curtly. When he finally spoke again, his voice had grown colder. "Send me your address.""What for?""I'm coming to get you."He sounded so casual, as if I had simply left home in a fit of anger and rented a place for a few days.I lowered my head and began unfastening my gloves."There's no need."Rhett's voice turned displeased."Are you still not done with this?"My fingers froze. "What did you just say?""I've already transferred the Guardia back. Matthew and the others will take orders only from you from now on. I'll deal with Lauren too."His tone softened."Come home. I'll let the things that happened over the past few days slide."I could not help laughing. Two short, bitter laughs escaped me, and he immediately asked, "What are you laughing at?""Rhett, do you still think I'm throwing a tantrum?""Aren't you?" His voice turned cold again. "You got angry over

Outside the window, a crystal-clear lake stretched into the distance. The house was small, but its interior was warm and inviting. That afternoon, I visited a horse ranch on the outskirts of town. Before I got married, I had loved horseback riding. When my father was still alive, he took me riding every spring. After I married Rhett, I went riding twice during the first few years. Then the family business grew more demanding, and my riding boots were tucked away in a closet, never to be worn again.A staff member led over a chestnut mare."Been a while since you last rode?"I smiled and held up seven fingers."Seven years."The staff member laughed."Take it slow, then."My arms were still a little stiff as I stepped into the stirrup and swung myself into the saddle. However, once the mare broke into a run and the wind rushed against my face, I could not help laughing out loud.By the time I dismounted, my calves were trembling from the strain.Even so, I went out and boug

At the very bottom was my signature. An icy smirk tugged at Rhett's lips."Well, look who's finally grown a backbone."Felix wisely kept his mouth shut.Rhett flipped the agreement back to the first page."Where is she?""She left the estate around five this morning. She took her usual car.""Where did she go?""We're still checking with the airport."Rhett clenched his fists, and the atmosphere around him grew even more oppressive."She walked out of the estate, and you're only telling me now that you have no idea where she went?"Sweat beaded on Felix's forehead."The men at the back entrance thought Donna was just stepping out for a while. They didn't report it."Rhett's jaw tightened."Find her."Two hours later, the flight records arrived at his study.Felix spoke in a low voice."At six this morning, a plane took off from Palmerwood. Donna was on the passenger list."Rhett's gaze turned icy."Destination?""Zerwick.""Zerwick..." He repeated the name through
