Chapter 3

작가: Chelsea
I had just changed out of my formal gown when the butler knocked on my door.

"Boss, something has happened to Miss Lauren!"

Her car had gone out of control on the way back to the South District and crashed into a guardrail. Fortunately, she had escaped serious injury, though shattered glass had cut her arm.

Rhett hurried downstairs at once.

Several items recovered from the accident scene had been laid out in the middle of the foyer. Among them was a silver access token that I recognized immediately. It had only ever been used by the Guardia.

Matthew stood nearby.

"This token was issued exclusively to our Guardia. Miss Lauren changed her route at the last minute tonight, and the only people who knew her whereabouts were members of our team."

Rhett's expression darkened.

"What about the car?"

"The brake lines were tampered with."

Just then, Lauren walked in from outside, her arm wrapped in bandages.

"Boss!" Her face was pale, and she spoke urgently. "This definitely has nothing to do with Donna!"

With that single sentence, she managed to turn everyone's attention toward me.

Rhett walked over to her.

"The doctor told you to rest. What are you doing out here?"

"I was afraid you might misunderstand Donna." Her eyes reddened. "After all, the Guardia served under Donna for so many years. Now that they've suddenly been transferred to me, it's only natural that some of them might need time to adjust."

My hands clenched into fists.

"What exactly are you trying to say?"

Lauren immediately shook her head.

"I'm not saying Donna ordered them to do anything. I just think someone might be trying to stand up for her..."

After hearing that, Rhett actually turned to look at me with suspicion.

He ordered someone to escort Lauren back to her room. Only after the foyer had emptied, leaving only our own people behind, did he approach me.

"You argued with me about the Guardia last night, and today Lauren's car was involved in an accident."

I stared at him.

"So?"

"Lauren's theory isn't unreasonable," he said calmly.

A bitter laugh escaped me.

"Rhett, are you actually suspecting me because of something Lauren said?"

His brows drew together.

"I'm just trying to get to the bottom of this."

"Then do it."

I turned to leave.

"Nancy."

Rhett's voice stopped me.

"Until this matter is resolved, I'm suspending you from all family business operations."

I slowly turned around.

"What did you just say?"

"All orders issued under Donna's name must receive my approval for the time being." He avoided my gaze. "It'll only be a few days. Once the investigation is complete, I'll restore your authority."

My chest tightened painfully. I stared at him, unable to believe what I was hearing.

"You already believe her."

"I don't." He sounded almost defensive.

"Then why are you taking away my authority?"

Rhett's expression hardened as well.

"Because someone nearly died! Lauren's father already gave his life for the Wilson Family. I won't let her die under suspicious circumstances on my territory too."

There it was again.

I looked at him as wave after wave of helplessness washed over me.

This time, I did not argue.

Rhett probably thought I had finally accepted his decision. He stroked my hair, his voice softening.

"Get some sleep tonight. I'll finish the investigation tomorrow and come see you myself."

I closed my eyes. After a long silence, I managed a single word.

"Fine."

Rhett lowered his head and kissed me.

"That's my good girl."

After Rhett left, my assistant delivered the final batch of documents to my study.

The divorce papers were ready, and all my personal accounts had been separated from the family's finances. The properties I owned had also been withdrawn from the Wilson Family's shared interests.

I read through the documents page by page, then signed my name.

Outside the window, the world was pitch-black. I collapsed onto the bed.

Only a few hours remained before I left Sicellia for good.

The lawyer pushed the pen toward Rhett."All that remains is your signature."Rhett did not take it. His gaze remained fixed on the final page, his brows tightly furrowed."What if I refuse to sign?"The lawyer answered calmly. "She is prepared to proceed with litigation."Rhett looked up at me, his eyes bloodshot."Do you really have to go this far?""Yes."His lips pressed into a thin line, and a flicker of helpless embarrassment crossed his face. I did not rush him.Rhett lowered his eyes, his voice hoarse."I don't know what to do anymore."Hearing those words from him was so unfamiliar that I stared at him for a moment in surprise. His fingers pressed against the edge of the document, and his lashes gradually grew damp."That night in the basement... I went down there afterward. It was so cold inside."I said nothing. His eyes slowly reddened."I knew you were afraid, yet I still did that to you."I lowered my gaze and replied calmly, "That's all in the past."Rh

The next day, when I left the apartment, his car was still parked downstairs. It was there on the third day, too.On the fourth day, when I returned from the horse ranch, I found him standing by the roadside."Have you eaten?"I ignored him.He followed me."Nancy."I was beginning to lose patience."How long are you planning to stay here?"Rhett's expression stiffened."Until you agree to come home with me.""Then you can keep waiting."His expression darkened instantly, but unlike before, he did not order me to stop. That evening, I received a call from Matthew."Donna."I frowned."Don't call me that anymore."Matthew paused."Madam, the investigation into Lauren's accident is complete."My hand stopped at the rim of my cup."What happened?""The car was tampered with, but it was someone on her own team who did it. She also deliberately planted that access token in the car."I said nothing, so Matthew continued."She wanted the Boss to believe that someone was

A black sedan was parked outside my apartment building. When the car door opened, I stopped in my tracks.Rhett stepped out. It had only been a few days, but he had visibly lost weight, and faint dark circles shadowed his eyes."Nancy."I continued walking. He followed me."Come home with me."I stopped and turned to face him."You flew all the way here just to say that?"Rhett's brows knitted together."I've transferred the entire Guardia back to the estate. I've also revoked Lauren's authority. And I got your mother's brooch back for you. All right?"I shrugged."So?"His expression stiffened."What do you mean, 'so'?"I've done everything I can to put things back the way they were."Confusion crept into Rhett's voice."Now come home with me."I stared at him, unable to stop the bitter smile tugging at my lips. His expression immediately darkened."What is it this time?""Put things back the way they were," I repeated. "And then what?"Rhett's gaze grew colder b

There was a brief silence on the other end of the line. Rhett probably had not expected me to respond so curtly. When he finally spoke again, his voice had grown colder. "Send me your address.""What for?""I'm coming to get you."He sounded so casual, as if I had simply left home in a fit of anger and rented a place for a few days.I lowered my head and began unfastening my gloves."There's no need."Rhett's voice turned displeased."Are you still not done with this?"My fingers froze. "What did you just say?""I've already transferred the Guardia back. Matthew and the others will take orders only from you from now on. I'll deal with Lauren too."His tone softened."Come home. I'll let the things that happened over the past few days slide."I could not help laughing. Two short, bitter laughs escaped me, and he immediately asked, "What are you laughing at?""Rhett, do you still think I'm throwing a tantrum?""Aren't you?" His voice turned cold again. "You got angry over

Outside the window, a crystal-clear lake stretched into the distance. The house was small, but its interior was warm and inviting. That afternoon, I visited a horse ranch on the outskirts of town. Before I got married, I had loved horseback riding. When my father was still alive, he took me riding every spring. After I married Rhett, I went riding twice during the first few years. Then the family business grew more demanding, and my riding boots were tucked away in a closet, never to be worn again.A staff member led over a chestnut mare."Been a while since you last rode?"I smiled and held up seven fingers."Seven years."The staff member laughed."Take it slow, then."My arms were still a little stiff as I stepped into the stirrup and swung myself into the saddle. However, once the mare broke into a run and the wind rushed against my face, I could not help laughing out loud.By the time I dismounted, my calves were trembling from the strain.Even so, I went out and boug

At the very bottom was my signature. An icy smirk tugged at Rhett's lips."Well, look who's finally grown a backbone."Felix wisely kept his mouth shut.Rhett flipped the agreement back to the first page."Where is she?""She left the estate around five this morning. She took her usual car.""Where did she go?""We're still checking with the airport."Rhett clenched his fists, and the atmosphere around him grew even more oppressive."She walked out of the estate, and you're only telling me now that you have no idea where she went?"Sweat beaded on Felix's forehead."The men at the back entrance thought Donna was just stepping out for a while. They didn't report it."Rhett's jaw tightened."Find her."Two hours later, the flight records arrived at his study.Felix spoke in a low voice."At six this morning, a plane took off from Palmerwood. Donna was on the passenger list."Rhett's gaze turned icy."Destination?""Zerwick.""Zerwick..." He repeated the name through
