LOGINKael’s POV:
The office was quiet, stacks of reports spread across the heavy oak desk, half read. The faint scent of pine smoke from the fireplace lingered, mixed with ink and leather.
The door opened wide as my beta, Dennis, walked in and banged it shut behind him. His steps hurried, he slammed his hands on my desk and removed strands from his face. I dropped the papers I held on top of my desk, to join with the rest scattered on the desk.
“The elders council wants a meeting with you now,” he said. “They demand answers about the girl that was found at the borders.”
I raised my brows and leaned back on the chair. Dennis is always tense with matters that concern the council because of how level headed they can be. My mind goes to the girl, her well structured face, green eyes and blonde hair. My mate. My wolf, Rowan, starts to get restless. Why did she have to come from the enemies pack?
Tightened. my jaw, I stood to my feet. “Then let's go and not keep them waiting.”
I dropped the paper I held and arranged the stack of papers. I intended to find out if the girl told the truth after the meeting. Dennis headed out and I followed him and closed the door behind me.
I entered the council chambers and the smell of old wood hit me. The elders were already seated. A half circle of gray haired men with piercing eyes. My dad is seated to my left. It is usually a tradition that old Alphas joined the council. The thought of doing this seemed foreign to me.I took my seat and my beta took his by my right.
“It has reached us,” one elder started, “that you brought an outsider here without consulting us. A girl that was found at the borders.”
I resist the urge to roll my eyes. The elder that just spoke is the oldest in the council, one of the people who always finds reason to question how I run the pack.
“She was injured,” I said evenly. “It seemed she was pursued through the borders. My beta’s patrol found her before she was attacked, but the rogues were not found.”
Murmurs rippled through the council. Another elder leaned forward, his eyes narrowed. “And you believed her?”
I heard disdain in his voice and I felt my wolf stirred, he spoke about our mates like that. I raised my hands and the murmur died down. Even if theynfound ways to challenge my authority. I am still their Alpha.
“She spoke about an attack on her pack,” I replied calmly, from experience it's the best way to deal with them. “I and my beta would be going to see for ourselves.”
There's silence in the room. The elders exchanged looks, but didn't say anything. They seemed to agree with the way the situation was being handled. I looked to my Dad, he nodded slightly and I turned to my beta.
“When would you be going to her pack?” The oldest man asked. He adjusted his glasses and leaned forward. The sound of the fan was heard.
“We intend to leave after the meeting.” I replied.
I hit a wooden hammer on the desk to signify the end of the meeting. We all stood and bowed slightly. I left with my beta.
The car had already been arranged and set for the road by the time the meeting was done. Two dark men, tall and well- built men stood by either side of the backseat door. My guard, Ken, held the door to the car for me. I entered with my beta, Ken took the seat in front and the second guard, Derick, took the seat with wheels so he drove. I am not a fan of moving with plenty of cars and escorts except when necessary.
I stared out the window. They drove through the night, the forest appeared blurry. The closer we drew, the heavier the air seemed.
They reached the top of the hill.
The valley below was so quiet. There was nobody in sight. The pack's village lay in ashes, houses destroyed and the earth blackened. It looked like fire wiped off the whole pack.
“This is so bad,” my beta speaks first.
“Stop the car and let's check if we will see anyone.”
I have walked for like ten minutes, no sign of life. I ran my fingers across the blackened earth. It's still warm. It's recent. She has been around for two days so it's possible that the night she was found at the borders being pursued by the rogues was the day of the attack.
When rogues attack a pack. They do it to claim the territory or take over the pack. They usually attack till the pack is weak.
My dad was a rogue. He conquered the other pack by attacking with other rogues till they surrendered. The general council was not so happy with this, they just had to accept since the pack surrendered. This looks like their aim was to erase the existence of the pack. A meeting will need to be held to discuss this matter. If not there's a tendency for another park to be next in line. The rogue had already trespassed our territory with her that night.
I heard footsteps so I turned, it's Derek.
“I have not found any one, a couple of corpses,” he said.
“Who do you think would have done this?” My beta asked as he joined us.
I straightened slowly and my expression was unreadable. “No. Not yet.”
But my mind raced. The pack that lays destroyed had been our enemies for two generations. Large and powerful. It will take more than rogues to wipe them like this.
My eyes gazed at the area, as we walked to the car to head back to the pack. We all entered and Derek drove. My beta stared outside the window. Just then my beta’s phone rang and he picked it. His voice sounded tensed and he ended the call. Turning to face me. My heart skipped a bi
t, I felt I won't like what's coming.
“ We were attacked.”
CHAPTER 41 Clara's POV: The bunk is hard. It was comfortable when I first lay on it but I have been in the same position for so long and my entire body was cramping. I do not know how long I have been like this by the way. It is like living in muscle memory. I was just living without really trying to put effort into anything. Not making efforts to change position on the bed. Not making efforts to try and peep through the window of the cell I was locked in. But mostly not making an effort to think. I wanted to be so detached from my thoughts. I did not want to rely on the fact that my son was kidnapped by my father and that his life could be at risk. I did not want to feel guilty for not being there.I did not want to think. I did not want to panic. I did not want to feel. I just wanted to be null. Saying I was scared was an understatement. For the first time in my nearly perfect smooth powerful life, I felt low. Depressed, dejected. Clara Brad I knew was not like this.If this wa
CHAPTER 40Kael's POV:There are different shades of shock. Like it comes in different shades. The first shade had come on when Alpha Brad had singlehandedly and swiftly kidnapped his own blood. His own grandson. It left a new light as to everything. He was a beast. One who would even devour his own blood without second thoughts. And I had underestimated him. The audacity to take a child in broad daylight. Request a ransom even. For him, everyone was a pawn on his chessboard. Clara, his daughter, has been the most used. Evan, his grandchild having been introduced to the board. And there was me of course.I fume at the mere thought of being made to believe I was a father to a child that was not mine. I was drugged for basically no reason but to fit into the scenario. In Austin's words, he could not stand thinking I'd be the father of his grandchild. He loathed me that much and it was reciprocal. Most of the slight hate I had transgressed to little Evan was because I could not stand th
CHAPTER 39Austin's POV:It takes will, expertise and composure to walk away from Ari in that library. Not when she looked like she was about to fall apart. Not when the walls around her were actually falling apart. It does not matter if I was younger. I just wanted to be there. To protect. But recently I realized that if I try to be in everything, I'll end up being in nothing. My life after the bonfire had been about Ari throughout and I wanted to see and experience life doing my own thing despite how much I loved my sister. And I knew she understood. It was why she did not suggest I sleep over. It was why she did not question my judgments over what I wanted to do with Derek. What I was doing with the pack. She understood my dreams and let me live them because of course she loved me and would be too selfish to hold back.It was a good thing Clara did not prolong the drama by putting up a show or fight. She had accepted her fate, explained her cramped daddy issues situation and even s
CHAPTER 38Arianna's POV:Once Kael's head disappears around the corner, I turn and glare at Clara.“What was that?!” It is an effort to keep my voice low.She shrugs. And damn that one shouldered shrug. I thought that was my thing. Was she mimicking me or what?“Why are you keeping it away from him? He deserves to know about the prophecy. Not like it would help me if he did. I just do not know why you are hiding it from him.”“You have secrets too, I know. But I'm not digging into them. So do well to mind your business.” I hiss as I brush forcefully with intention against her as I walk past. I can hear her snort from behind. My God, she was a bitch through and through. Did she forget she just lost a child?I stop at the door and beckon on one guard. He walks briskly over and keeps his head bowed as I address him.“I need eyes on her all the time. Day and night. And make sure she shows up at the library tomorrow whether she's grieving or not.”He nods and bows out to carry out the ord
CHAPTER 37Kael's POV:“What?!” Neither of the women across my table seem to have a tangible explanation for the next how long. So I shift my chair back and begin to actively pace the small space to digest fully what I just heard. This was Alpha Brad's doing?I stop and stare from the redhead to the brunette and back to the redhead again.“How am I sure this is not a set-up? Like this is not one of the many plans you and your father have masterminded?”In response, Clara snorts arrogantly, turning her head away to hide the tears in her eyes while biting down on her lower lip. Arianna looks at me like I've lost it and says, “Not everything is about setups.”“Yeah? Like this was not even a plan to have us both tearing at ourselves and arguing over nothing?” I retorted.“Kael none of this is helping. You are clearly causing her more pain” Arianna says.I turn to stare at her like she fell from the stars. How could she not see from my perspective? How could she not smell danger looming?
CHAPTER 36Clara's POV:I have been working in the library. All thanks to this Arianna of a girl. I can not believe she has chosen not to have any grudge on me despite every evil I have done to her.I sigh and move over to the last shelf to dust it because there really was not much to do in the library. Arianna works here too. As if the idea of her in the same building as me for most of the day hours is not choking enough, she's the chief librarian. Meaning I work for her.As long as her generosity was heart touching, I had a feeling she convinced Kael to let me work alongside her so she could have her eyes on me all day. I did not mind because I wanted to watch her too. Why was she not doing anything about the prophecy? Of course, she had not told Kael yet. Why, I could not fathom. But I knew I was treading on eggs and sooner or later they would crack.Born the child of a cunning wolf, there was a lot I learned and unlearned about life. First, you never let your opponent attack firs
CHAPTER 34Austin's POV:Moon pack is taking a new form so fast that even I, find it hard to believe. When we arrived first I was too broken hearted from the memories I mean I literally grew up here but it was now debris and tatters. Plus my parents are dead and my sister is miles away in the bosom
CHAPTER 33Austin's POV:I slump in my sleeping bag. It's in the middle of this tent I built and the fire crackling outside is on the verge of turning off and leaving me alone in the dark. Utterly alone.Maybe not alone. The night animals growls, the midnight air, the trees swishing in concordance,
CHAPTER 32Arianna's POV:Aa expected I settled in easily with Kael. His chambers was not entirely big as a reigning Alpha's lodge. I commented this and he quickly said if I needed a change he could have them tear down the whole thing and make a new one.But I did not want a change. This was family
CHAPTER 31Arianna's POV:I stagger back. It is not a very smooth move because Kael notices and steadies me readily. His smile is so wide and eager. That I smile back to reassure him I was good. However, the moment I tear my eyes from his, I find the seer staring at me. His entire self is screaming
