Chapter 3

Author: Hardcore Fairy
I didn’t react to the ring.

"Have you given any thought to our breakup?"

My question clearly set him off. His expression darkened.

"What do you mean?

"I’ve already apologized. Can’t you just let it go? It’s not even a big deal."

I shook my head, my expression frosty.

He frowned even more. His tone turned sharp.

"I’ve been giving in to you a lot, Isabel. Stop threatening me with this breakup nonsense. Which man would even want you if you left me?"

Right then, his phone buzzed.

Marie’s name lit up on the screen. A message popped up.

[I'm at home right now, Mr. Grant. I don't feel well. Can you come over?]

Charlie noticed me looking at it. He grew anxious and tried to explain.

"She’s still pregnant, and she worked hard at the proposal today. I need to check in on her just in case. Stay home and calm down, okay?"

Without waiting for a reply, he left in a hurry—no hesitation at all.

Maybe he was afraid I’d mention breaking up again.

Maybe he was just worried about Marie.

Either way, he left quickly and decisively.

I lay in bed, unable to sleep. My heart was drowning in disappointment.

When I finally got up to pack my suitcase, my phone lit up.

Another message.

[It doesn’t matter if you and Mr. Grant get married. My child is the one Mr. Grant really cares about. I’m the one winning right now, and my child will continue to lord over yours in the future!]

Then came another:

[Want to guess whose child will be born first, Miss Langdon? Yours or mine? And whose child will Mr. Grant love more?]

My hand clenched around the phone, fingers turning white. Rage and helplessness surged through me.

I blocked her number.

Then I took a screenshot of her messages and sent them to Charlie.

My abortion appointment was scheduled for the next morning.

Everything went smoothly.

Just a month ago, I had been overjoyed to learn I was pregnant.

Now, I had lost the child—and all hope.

The pain tore through me.

It hurt even more than seeing Charlie side with Marie, watching her lean close to him over and over again.

I dragged my weakened body to get the doctor’s report. As I walked out, I froze.

Charlie was just outside, gently helping Marie out of the gynecologist’s office.

They were chatting like a real couple, smiling and relaxed.

Marie spotted me first. She gave me a smug smile before quickly pretending to panic. She let go of Charlie’s hand and called out timidly, "Isabel…"

Charlie turned when he heard her.

The moment he saw me, he stepped away from Marie.

"Marie wasn’t feeling well last night. She overexerted herself at the proposal. Don’t get the wrong idea—I’m just here to accompany her for a checkup."

I glanced at Marie’s rosy cheeks. She didn’t look like someone in any pain.

Charlie, though, was watching her with concern, as if she might fall apart any second.

I said coldly, "I see your company offers amazing employee benefits. The boss even escorts his secretary to the gynecologist."

Marie rushed over and grabbed my hand.

"Don’t misunderstand, Isabel. This is all my fault. My tummy was hurting yesterday, and I didn’t know anyone else in the office. I had no choice but to ask Mr. Grant to come with me… Ah!"

Before she could finish, she suddenly released my hand, stumbled back, and fell hard.

Her belly slammed against the ground.

She immediately curled up in pain.

"I was wrong, Isabel. Please… forgive me."Marie’s gone from the company. We can start over. You once said you’d love me your entire life, that you’d never leave me."I laughed."Mr. Grant, we broke up. We’re no longer anything to each other. I hope you’ll show me the basic respect you’d give any stranger."His expression changed."You’re really not going to forgive me? I was just trying to do something nice. I know I didn’t handle it well, but I never cheated on you."I looked at him without saying a word. That silence made him nervous. His eyes flicked away, unable to meet mine."Charlie Grant, when will you understand? Emotional betrayal is still betrayal."When you used work as an excuse to accompany another woman… that’s when you stopped being mine."He looked like he was about to say something but stopped."Is there no way to fix this?"His voice trembled. His eyes turned red.Charlie Grant, the man who had crushed my heart with his choices, now stood before me looking like a bro

She turned around with a sweet smile."I heard Isabel left. You must be tired and hungry after such a long day… I came to make your favorite dishes."Before she could finish, Charlie stormed over and grabbed her by the throat. His voice dropped to a menacing growl."Didn’t you hear what I said?"I asked you—what the hell are you doing in my house?"Marie’s legs buckled from fear, but she forced a smile."You gave me the door code once—when I helped you get that document, remember? I just wanted to surprise you..."That only made him more furious. It

Charlie took blow after blow.It felt like an invisible pair of hands were wrapped around his heart, squeezing tighter and tighter until he couldn’t breathe. He moved like a broken, robotic machine, frantically searching for any way to contact me—calling, messaging, checking every platform. There was nothing. No trace. No clue.He couldn’t understand why I’d leave him without a reason.Charlie collapsed to the floor like a helpless child. He hugged his head and sobbed, completely falling apart. Then, as if grasping for control, he reached for his phone. He had to find out where I went. He was about to call his assistant when his phone lit up with another incoming call.It was Marie. Her pitiful voice oozed with fake fragility. "Mr. Grant… My tummy’s been hurting suddenly. Can you come with me to the hospital?"Charlie snarled, "Get lost."He hung up without hesitation, disgusted by the sound of her pretentious voice.Without waiting another second, he started investigating on his own.

Charlie gave the same excuse he always did.He was swamped with work and had overtime meetings. However, it no longer mattered to me.Sarah and I were focused on our plans to study abroad.I was finally leaving this place—the city I’d lived in for over twenty years. I hadn’t expected that my last night here would be spent in a hospital bed.At midnight, Charlie quietly opened the door to my ward.He stepped softly to my bedside, thinking I was asleep, and stood there watching me in silence. Then, in a low, remorseful voice, he said, "I'm sorry, Isabel…"He didn’t move, just stood there, as if hoping I’d open my eyes and say something.I stopped pretending.I opened my eyes and looked at him calmly. "There’s nothing to be sorry for. Everything is in the past."Charlie’s face lit up slightly, as if he misunderstood."You’re right," he said, his voice trembling with emotion. "Everything is in the past… I’ll make it up to you, Isabel."He stepped closer, about to say more.I gave him a sma

The doctor who had performed my abortion was urgently called in to perform emergency surgery on me. The moment he saw my condition, he exploded in rage."Are you even a man?! Miss Langdon just had an abortion! Don’t you know she shouldn't be exerting herself physically? Are you trying to kill her?!"Charlie stood frozen, staring at the pool of blood on the floor while the doctor continued to scold him.He didn’t respond. He didn’t move.He just stood there, trembling slightly, like he had just taken a heavy blow to the chest."Our baby was fine just last night…"His voice shook."How could this happen? Why… why would she get an abortion…?"My surgery lasted five hours. When they finally pushed me out of the operating room, someone rushed over.It was Charlie. He looked completely disheveled—furious and frantic. His eyes were bloodshot, his whole body tense.I had never seen him like that before. He walked up to me, gripping the hospital bed tightly. His eyes bulged with emotion as he l

"Marie!"Charlie's expression changed instantly. He shoved me aside roughly and rushed over to help her up."It's bad enough that you're throwing a tantrum at me, Isabel, but how could you hurt her when she's pregnant? What if something happens to her?"Tears welled up in Marie’s eyes as she tried to defend me."Don't be mad at Isabel, Mr. Grant. I was the one who tripped… This is my fault…"The more she spoke, the darker Charlie's face became."Apologize to her, Isabel!""She was the one who pretended to fall."I almost lost my footing when he pushed me, but I managed to steady myself."I never touched her. That whole fall was just an act."Charlie’s jaw tightened."Are you saying she's using her unborn child to frame you? You're about to be a mother too. Do you think that's something she’d do?"I looked at him, stunned by how fiercely he was defending her."I already told you last night. We're breaking up. What right do you have to demand anything from me?"Charlie's face fell. Anger
