The moon hung low and red over Blackthorn Pack territory, staining the clearing the color of old wounds.

Seraphina Vale stood at the outermost edge of the circle, barefoot in the packed dirt. Torches burned on tall iron stands. Wolves filled the space between the trees, high-ranked in leather and silk, lower ranks in simpler clothes, all facing the raised stone platform at the center. The air smelled of smoke, pine, and the sharp metallic scent of excited wolves.

Sera had stood at gatherings like this her whole life. Always a few steps back from the center. Always close enough to hear everything and far enough to matter to no one. Tonight she had let herself hope, just a little, that it might finally be different.

Kael Draven stood on the platform, broad-shouldered, dark hair pulled back, storm-gray eyes moving slowly across his pack. Isolde Kane stood at his right side in a white dress that caught every flicker of torchlight, her hand already resting on his forearm as though she had claimed that spot long before tonight made it official.

Kael raised one hand. The low murmur of voices died at once.

“I have waited,” he said, voice carrying cleanly across the clearing, “for the moon to show me my true mate. Tonight she has.”

His jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. Two years he had let the pack believe the bond with Sera might still take. Two years was long enough for a leader to be seen as weak for waiting.

His gaze traveled past the front rows, past the ranked wolves, past the lower ranks, and settled on Isolde.

“Isolde Kane. You are my fate. My Luna. My equal.”

A roar of approval surged from the pack. Fists rose. Boots stamped the dirt. Somewhere near the front a wolf howled long and loud into the night. Isolde stepped forward. Kael took her hand and lifted it high. Silver light flared between their palms, bright, permanent, the bond mark sealing in full view of every wolf present.

Isolde turned her head just enough to let the torchlight catch the new mark. Her mouth curved into a small, satisfied smile as she looked out over the pack, already measuring them.

It was not triumph alone in her expression. It was relief. She had spent two years watching Kael’s eyes drift toward the girl at the edge of every gathering, and she had learned to hate the particular quality of his silence whenever Sera’s name came up.

Kael’s eyes shifted.

Sera’s heart dropped before he even said her name. She knew, in the half-second before he spoke, exactly what was coming. Knowing did nothing to soften it.

“Seraphina Vale.”

She stayed still at the edge of the circle, hands loose at her sides, though her pulse had begun to hammer in her throat.

“Whatever faint thread the moon once tied between us ends tonight. I reject you. Fully. Publicly. In front of every wolf who matters.”

The words landed like a blow she had braced for and still could not absorb. Heat rushed to her face. Her throat closed around something she refused to let out, not here, not in front of all of them.

Soft laughter moved through the crowd like a current. A young male near the front snorted. An older female clicked her tongue. Someone farther back muttered, “About time.” Isolde’s smile widened a fraction as she leaned into Kael’s side.

Sera’s vision blurred at the edges. She blinked hard, furious at herself for it. Two years of half-hoping, of telling herself the moon did not make mistakes, unraveling in front of an audience that had already decided she was nothing worth defending.

Kael continued, voice even and clear. “You are free of any claim. Free to leave these borders if you wish. The moon chose poorly once. It will not choose poorly again.”

He raised Isolde’s hand higher. The silver light pulsed once more, brighter this time.

“Tomorrow the bonding rites begin. Three nights of celebration. Feasting. Runs under the moon. The entire pack will attend.”

His gaze cut toward Sera one final time.

“Except you.”

The dismissal landed without a raised volume, and somehow that made it worse. Around her, bodies shifted. Shoulders turned away. Two young females in the second row exchanged glances and covered their mouths. A broad-shouldered male stepped sideways, deliberately blocking part of her view of the platform before moving on.

Something hot and sharp uncurled in her chest beneath the shame. Anger, thin and new, the first feeling that did not taste like grief.

Ronan Vale stood three rows ahead, spine rigid, eyes locked on the platform, hands clenched at his sides. He did not turn his head. He did not speak. She wanted, absurdly, for him to look back at her just once. He did not.

Sera stepped back from the circle. A shoulder bumped hers hard enough to knock her off balance. She caught herself on the rough bark of a nearby tree. Another body blocked her path for a second too long before sliding aside. Low laughter followed her as she pushed through the outer edge of the crowd and into the trees. A voice behind her said, just loud enough to carry, “Don’t let the door hit you.”

She did not run. She would not give them that. But her breath came fast and ragged once the trees swallowed her, and her eyes stung in the dark where no one could see.

The path to the cabin at the far boundary of the territory stretched narrow and dark. Pine needles carpeted the ground under her bare feet. Branches overhead cut the red moonlight into thin, shifting strips. Behind her the pack’s cheering rose again, louder now, mixed with the first deep notes of celebration drums. A howl went up, then another, then many, Kael’s pack, celebrating the mate she would never be.

She walked without looking back, jaw tight, arms wrapped around herself against a cold that had nothing to do with the night air. Every step took her farther from the only home she had ever known, and for the first time in her life the distance felt like a mercy rather than a punishment.

The cabin sat alone among the trees, small and weathered. She pushed the door open on its creaking hinges, stepped inside, and closed it behind her. The single room held a narrow bed, a wooden chair with one uneven leg, and a cold hearth that still smelled faintly of old ash.

She sat on the edge of the bed. The mattress dipped under her weight. Her hands rested flat on her knees. For a moment she simply stared at them, at the tremor she could not quite stop.

She did not cry. She had promised herself that much walking back through the trees. But she sat with her spine curved forward and her breath uneven, humiliation and grief and something colder settling into her chest like stones.

She thought of her mother, gone since Sera was small, and wondered, not for the first time, whether things would have been different if she had lived. She thought of Ronan’s rigid back, of the years he had spent teaching her to fight and never once teaching her how to survive a room full of people who despised her.

A soft footstep landed just beyond the cabin door.

Then another.

Then a third, closer.

Silence followed, thick and waiting.

Lucian returned with a folder under one arm and two cups of something hot that smelled of bitter herbs.Sera had not slept, though she had lain still with her eyes closed long enough to lose track of the hours. She sat up as he entered, accepting the cup without asking what was in it. The liquid was strong and earthy. Heat spread through her chest after the first swallow.“Blackthorn pulled back to their border at dawn,” Lucian said, taking the chair across from the cot. “They will regroup. It buys us a day, maybe two.”“And then?”“And then we are not here when they come back.”He set the folder on the table between them but did not open it yet. Sera watched his hands. They were steady, the same hands that had cut the rope from her wrists and later examined the burns Isolde’s men had left.“Your bloodline is called the silver line,” he said. “It has not surfaced in a confirmed carrier in six generations. Most packs believe it died out entirely. I did not believe that.”“How did you k

Kael’s voice hung in the dark, calm in a way that made it worse.Sera stood frozen at Lucian’s side, her eyes straining against the blackness for the shape of him. She could hear breathing, more than one set, close to the broken doorway. Somewhere behind them Matteo’s rifle shifted, a small mechanical click that meant a safety coming off. The air in the room still carried the sharp cold left by her power, mixed with the iron scent of blood from the two bodies on the floor.“You are not welcome in this house,” Lucian said. His voice carried none of the urgency from a moment before. If anything it had gone flatter, colder.“I am not asking for welcome,” Kael said. “I am asking for what is mine.”“She signed a contract. She is Voss.”“She is Blackthorn blood before she is anything with your name stamped on it.” A pause, and when Kael spoke again his voice had moved, closer to the doorway now. “Seraphina. Come here.”Sera did not move. Her hands were still slick with blood that was not he

The heavy bolt slid into place with a solid click. She stepped back as the sounds of the attack rolled through the estate in waves outside the room. Automatic gunfire cracked in short bursts. Wolves snarled. Men shouted orders. Another explosion shook the floor hard enough to rattle the lamp on the side table. She moved to the tall windows and pulled one curtain aside a fraction. From the upper floor she could see part of the front grounds: floodlights had snapped on across the lawn, black-clad figures moving in tight formations behind low stone walls, and beyond the iron gates a larger mass of wolves pressing forward. Muzzle flashes lit the dark in bright white streaks.A body in Blackthorn leather fell near the gate and did not rise.Sera let the curtain fall back into place. The gunfire grew louder, closer. Footsteps pounded down the hallway outside her door. Someone shouted Lucian’s name. Another voice answered with a string of sharp commands. The fight had moved inside the main b

Sera picked up the folded document but did not open it right away.Lucian watched her hands without speaking. The vehicle rolled forward along the private road, black stone walls rising on both sides, the estate growing larger ahead.“What happens if I don’t sign,” she said. It was not quite a question.“Then you are a girl with an awakening bloodline and no pack, in a car outside my gates. Blackthorn already knows you are gone. Isolde saw your face change. She will have told Kael that much even if she does not understand what she saw. Others will hear of it by morning. I cannot protect what is not mine to protect. That is not sentiment. It is how the law works.”“And if I sign, I belong to you instead.”“You would have my name. My walls. My guard between you and anyone who comes for you.” A pause. “It is not nothing.”Sera looked down at the document again. Her hands, she noticed distantly, had stopped shaking somewhere in the last hour, not because the fear was gone, but because the

Sera placed her hand in his.The man pulled her to her feet in one clean motion, his grip firm, gloved fingers locking around hers. He turned into the darker trees at a steady pace, drawing her with him while alarm howls rose higher and closer behind them.Branches snapped under heavy paws. Voices shouted orders through the forest. He did not run, choosing instead paths that stayed in the deepest shadow. Sera kept pace beside him, her bare feet silent on the pine needles. The red moon broke through the canopy in thin shards of light. The scent of blood from the hollow still clung to the air.A large gray wolf burst from the undergrowth to their left, teeth bared. The man released Sera’s hand for half a second. His arm moved once, a black blade appearing in his grip and leaving it just as fast. The wolf dropped mid-leap and did not rise. He took her hand again without looking back, as though killing were no more remarkable to him than breathing.More howls answered the kill. The pack w

The door opened without a knock.Three figures stepped into the cabin. The first carried a lit torch. Isolde Kane stood in front. Two large males from the pack flanked her, both wearing the dark leather of Kael’s personal guard.Isolde looked around the cabin once, narrow bed, uneven chair, cold hearth, before settling on Sera.“You should have left already,” Isolde said.Sera stayed seated on the edge of the bed, hands flat on her knees, though her heart had begun to slam against her ribs. One of the guards closed the door behind them. The latch clicked into place.Isolde took a single step closer. “Kael gave you a chance to walk away. You sat here instead. That makes this simpler.”The second guard moved to the small table and set a length of rope on it. Torchlight gleamed on the fibers.Sera’s gaze tracked the rope, then returned to Isolde. Cold dread pooled low in her stomach, but she kept her face still. She would not give Isolde that too, not after everything else the night had
