The Fog Of the Gulf

The eastern harbor of the Shadowfang territory was usually alive with the clatter of merchant crates, the shouts of dockworkers, and the rhythmic lap of clear blue mountain water against timber piers. Tonight, however, an uncanny, heavy silence had smothered the bay.

A thick, milk-white fog rolled off the Great Frozen Gulf, clinging to the water like a dense shroud. Standing at the end of the main stone pier, flanked by two dozen elite Shadowfang guards with crossbows drawn, were Silas and Aria.

The mysterious warship drifted into view without making a sound.

It carried no sails, no oars, and no lanterns. Its hull was made entirely of petrified black wood—smooth as polished obsidian, untouched by barnacles or salt. Flying high from the main mast was a single, tattered white flag that hung lifelessly in the windless air.

"No heartbeat aboard," Silas growled low, his golden eyes narrowing into lethal slits as his sovereign pressure flared, sending ripples through the fog around them. His right hand rested on the hilt of his broadsword, his crimson blood-fire humming just beneath the dark steel. "Whatever is steering that ship isn't alive, Aria."

Aria stepped forward, her dark wool mantle whipping around her legs as her sapphire dagger flared with a sharp, protective light. Her High-Mage senses pushed into the mist, searching for a trace of arcana.

"It's not necromancy," Aria murmured, her brow furrowed in concentration. "It's a stasis spell... an ancient High-Arcana seal designed to preserve a message across centuries."

With a soft, sickening thud, the black warship scraped against the stone pier.

A heavy gangplank dropped onto the cobblestones with a hollow sound. From the quiet deck above, a single figure emerged from the white fog. It was a tall man clad in long, sweeping robes of silver and frost-gray, his face concealed beneath a deep hood. He walked down the gangplank slowly, his boots making no sound against the stone.

The Shadowfang archers immediately pulled their bowstrings taut, aiming straight for the stranger's chest.

"Hold!" Silas commanded, his voice cutting through the damp air like iron. He didn't move away from Aria; his massive frame remained shifted slightly in front of her, shielding her from any sudden attack. "Declare yourself before my guards paint this pier with your blood."

The hooded figure stopped five paces away. Slowly, he raised two thin, pale hands and pulled back his hood.

Gasps echoed through the ranks of the Shadowfang guards.

The man had sharp, elf-like features and pale silver hair, but his eyes were not blue like the Spire frost-weavers. They were a brilliant, glowing sapphire blue—identical to Aria’s own eyes when her High-Mage power was fully unraveled.

"It cannot be..." Aria breathed, her hand going to her throat as a sharp shockwave of recognition hit her bloodline through the leyline.

The stranger sank onto one knee on the cold stone pier, bowing his head deeply before Aria.

"Greetings, High-Mage Aria of House Astraea," the man said, his voice smooth, resonant, and carrying an eerie, ancient cadence. "I am High-Captain Kaelen of the Lost Sentinel Fleet... sent from the hidden realm across the Silent Ridge."

Silas didn't lower his guard. His hand remained firmly on his blade, his Alpha aura pressing heavily against Kaelen. "House Astraea was wiped out during the Great Fall three centuries ago. Speak quickly, stranger, before I decide this is another Spire trick."

Kaelen looked up, his sapphire eyes meeting Silas’s burning golden gaze without flinching, though a slight shiver ran through his shoulders under Silas's suffocating pressure.

"The continental bloodline was broken, Sovereign," Kaelen explained, turning his gaze back to Aria with profound reverence. "But those of us who guarded the original Astraea Vault across the Great Gulf survived behind the Mists of Stasis. For three hundred years, our seals held... until the High-Mage awakened the continental leyline six months ago."

Kaelen reached into his robes and withdrew an ancient, silver-bound scroll sealed with a familiar crest—a phoenix crowned in blue flame.

"The Mists of Stasis are fading, High-Mage," Kaelen warned gravely. "And the ancient enemy that drove our ancestors across the sea—the Void-Eaters of the Deep—have awakened. I have come to deliver the Last Will of your forefathers... and to beg the United North for aid."
