LOGINChapter 4
Charlotte's POV: My online girlfriend
She didn’t see me or maybe she did and didn’t recognize me because why would she?
I could breathe normally again or sort of. I always thought transfer students were supposed to look confused or maybe holding a map upside down.
But the girl walking through the hallway right now? Yeah, no. She looked like she walked out of a dramatic anime intro with theme music blasting behind her.
She had dark messy wolf cut hair and people actually slowed down to stare. Someone bumped into a locker because they weren’t looking and a group of girls whispered, “Who is she??” like she was a celebrity.
Max saw her and immediately stopped laughing mid sentence, his whole face rearranged itself like someone punched him. His smile dropped and his grip on his backpack strap tightened.
Charles leaned in, whispered something to him, and Max shoved him lightly, but his eyes didn’t move from her.
Before I could even process any of that, Maya came sprinting toward me.
“Charlotte!” She grabbed my arm dramatically. “Have you seen the new girl? Why is she that hot? Why is my school allergic to transferring ugly girls?”
“Maya…”
“Oh my gosh, you think she’s cute too, don’t you? Wait Piper from the LGBTQ group just texted me.” She shoved her phone in my eyeballs. “They said she looks like she escaped a biker gang, I’m scared but also emotionally attached already.”
Someone behind her said, “She looks like she beats people up for fun,” and Maya gasped and said that is so romantic.
Classic Maya, she always lived loudly inside her own rainbow universe.
“Maya, please breathe,” I whispered.
“I can’t breathe,” she whispered back. “Can you see her? She looks like a cartoon character.”
I rubbed my forehead, ready to tell her to calm down, when Max suddenly stood way too close to me, too close for normal Max behavior.
His hands slipped to my waist like he was trying to claim me or protect me, honestly I had no idea.
He never touched me like that in public.
“Don’t stare too much,” he muttered.
Excuse me??
Why is he acting weird?
I turned to look at him, but he avoided my eyes while Charles crossed his arms behind him, nodding like he was watching a live episode of drama.
“Interesting!” Charles whispered.
What is interesting??
Someone explain something to me.
Whispers started popping up around the hallway like popcorn.
“Is she a model?”
“Bro she looks dangerous.”
“No way she’s our age.”
“I bet she has tattoos.”
Someone even said, “I heard she got expelled from two schools,” which was physically impossible because she arrived literally ten minutes ago but this school loves drama more than oxygen.
A group of year eights ran past screaming,
“The new girl is so cool, I'm scared of her ”
Great, perfect, lovely, exactly what my heart needed while I was internally combusting.
Before I could interrogate anyone, my phone buzzed.
“Lottie guess who’s at Bridgehall Academy.”
My whole soul collapsed, Sophie was texting me while I stood ten steps away from her.
I looked up again, and Sophie wasn’t staring at me, she was staring at Max.
My stomach dropped straight to my ankles.
Why him? Why that look?
My brain ran through every single possible nightmare scenario in two seconds:
Do they know each other? Did she recognize him before me? Does Max know her? Does Sophie know that I know him? Does anyone know anything about anything??
I felt like a character in a movie who suddenly realizes she is not the main character in the movie anymore.
Max stiffened like someone punched him with air, but before I could even ask what was wrong, he suddenly leaned in and kissed me.
It wasn’t romantic, It wasn’t sweet and it felt like a shield, a cover to hide behind.
People gasped and someone yelled, “Damn”
I think I heard a phone camera shutter.
Max pulled back, but didn’t look at me even for a second. His eyes snapped straight back to Sophie and Sophie didn’t look away.
My heart was beating like it was trying to run out of my body, everything felt so unreal and I was panicking
So I did the only thing my brain could think of: stick to Max’s side like glue. If I acted normal, maybe nobody would see the emotional fire burning inside me.
“Charlotte? Are you okay?” Maya asked, her eyebrow raised like she already knew I was lying.
“I’m fine,” I said too fast, “I’m perfect.”
She stared at me,“Why are you holding Max’s sleeve like that?”
I looked down and I was, I dropped it immediately and laughed, a laugh that sounded like a dying cow.
“I’m just tired.”
Her jaw tightened in that tiny way she does, when she’s pretending to be unbothered.
Her arms crossed, then uncrossed, then crossed again.
She bit her lip, glanced at Sophie, then at me like she was trying to solve an equation she didn’t like.
Maya wasn’t dramatic anymore, she was quiet,
too quiet and that scared me more than anything.
Then Sophie stepped closer, Her boots echoed on the floor in that slow, dramatic way villains walk in movies, Max looked tense beside me and Maya’s entire vibe shifted fully from rainbow to storm cloud.
“I’ll see you later,” Maya said, oddly quiet and walked past us without looking back.
My chest hurt a little at how cold that sounded, but I didn’t have time to think about it because a soft voice spoke behind me.
“Hey, excuse me.”
My whole heart slammed into my ribs.
I turned around and her eyes met mine. There was something about the way she looked at me, like she recognized me but didn’t want to say it out loud.
Her eyebrows lifted just a little, and her eyes did this tiny shine thing that made my
brain go blank.
It felt like she was reading me before even speaking.
Then she said, slowly:
“Do I know you?”
CHAPTER 35: HAHA FOOLCHARLOTTE'S POV SOPHIE: guess who also got invited to a party last minuteSOPHIE: just got saved from boredom hehheI blinked. My stomach flipped. Sophie got invited to a party woahhh. I typed back quickly, thumbs trembling:ME: No way!! Who invited you?SOPHIE: friends, last minute thing, didn’t even plan to goSOPHIE: But yay! not alone in my boring houseI bit my lip, looking around the basement. The boys were laughing about something Max said, a kid was spinning in a chair dangerously close to the stereo, and I… Well, I was trying to figure out how to text Sophie without it looking like I was hiding.ME: Wow lucky you. I wish I was somewhere else, no kiddingI almost typed “I’m in a basement full of boys and weird energy drinks” but thought better of it.Max leaned over and whispered, “You okay?”I nodded, trying to act casual. “Yeah… yeahhh… just… soaking in the party atmosphere.”He smirked. “Uh huh. Party atmosphere. Got it.”I laughed nervously and typed
CHAPTER 34 : WORST PLANCHARLOTTE'S POV I woke up with my stomach doing nervous gymnastics. Party tonight, basement, Max, possibly loud music, definitely potential embarrassment. Before I even rolled out of bed, Maya burst into my room without knocking, classic Maya.“There she issss,” she sang, yanking open my wardrobe. “We’re picking an outfit. No objections. No ugly choices. No panicking clothes that overstimulates you.”“I never wear panic clothes,” I protested. She held up a shirt I’d worn at least eight times this month. “Really? Explain this then.” her eyebrows narrowing towards each other I threw a pillow at her. She dodged like she’d been training for this.My phone buzzed on my nightstand.SOPHIE: Good morning lottie. what are you up to today? My heart did an Olympic level flip.Of all the days, why today?I typed with my thumbs shaking:LOTTIE : hey!! I've got a birthday thing later tonight. nothing major, might sneak out of the party lol.Maya glanced over. “Who’re you
CHAPTER 33: DOUBLE TROUBLE CHARLOTTE'S POV My heart didn’t just drop it fell through the floorboards, took a bus, and left the country.Sophie’s voice came through the phone again, sharp and confused.“Charlotte?? Who’s Charlotte?”I stared at my screen like it had personally betrayed me.No. No. No. Universe, why??Before I could even react, my bedroom door swung open and Maya popped her head in holding her phone, “found my phone but do you have a charg..”“Maya get out,” I whisper yelled, eyes wide. She blinked. “But my..”“out!! out!!out!!!!out!!!Right now.”“…okay, jeez,” she muttered, backing out slowly. “Drama queen.”I shut the door so fast the air pressure changed. Now it was just me. Ohhh no me and Sophie and a mountain of panic big enough to have its own postcode.I unmuted the call with a shaky breath.“Sorry!” I said, trying to sound normal. “Um yeah! That was my.. my baby sister.”A pause followed, a very long uncomfortable pause .“…your sister?” Sophie echoed.“Yes!
CHAPTER 32 : DATE NIGHT WITH THE DUDECHARLOTTE’S POV Yesterday absolutely drained the life out of me. I mean, who knew selling cookies for six hours straight could feel like running an emotional marathon? Mrs. Cater was so sweet, but that woman had energy. She could probably run a small kingdom with the way she organized cupcake boxes and yelled, “SMILE, GIRLS!” every ten minutes.By the time Maya and I finally left the community center, my feet were crying. Not hurting, crying. They had emotions, they had opinions, they were judging me.When I finally got home, I kicked my shoes off like they were enemies and face planted onto my bed. My entire brain went blank for a moment until I remembered something.Sophie!!We hadn’t talked in a while. Not for any major reason, just life happening. School, drama with stalker girl, bakery chaos, and Sienna being Sienna. But still we were technically dating online, I don't think it's normal for couples not to talk, except lesbian couples do th
CHAPTER 31: MISERY OR MYSTERY CHARLOTTE'S POV Maya and I stared at the three new voice notes from Sienna, sitting unopened like tiny bombs on my screen. She always sent dramatic messages, but something about the way the first one cut off mid sentence had both of us sitting up straighter.“Okay,” Maya whispered. “Let’s just listen.”I tapped the first one. Sienna’s voice exploded through the speaker like she was running a marathon and gossiping at the same time.“Guyssss!!!!!you will not believe who I just saw at the rink this GIRL, this menace, this absolute spawn of chaos”Maya snorted. “Oh God. It’s her.”I nodded. “ wait who, Olivia ??? ”“Keep it up Charlotte, it's sienna nemesis”Ohhhh wow thank you for yelling for no absolute reason. The second voice note autoplayed.“She showed up with her stupid shiny skates acting like she invented skating like girl please, your technique is trash and your attitude is worse and she had the audacity to look me up and down like I was the one
CHAPTER 30: SEXY STALKER CHARLOTTE’S POV “She has pictures and videos of you, all this was taken unaware” “wait is that a picture of you during prom when you didn't win prom queen” Maya exclaimed.“Damnnnn why don't I have a stalker” Sienna yelled “having a stalker is soooo sexy gosh”“Wait”“Wait for what Maya?”“Shush I have a theory” Maya said while striking her chin “Nobody was talking, just talk already Maya”“What If, what if she rigged the vote, cause there's no way Sophie could have won it, you were top on the list”“But why would she rig it?”Maya kept scrolling through the phone like she was searching for buried treasure, her eyebrows practically touching her hairline. “Okay, this is already insane, but let’s see what else she was hiding,” she muttered, thumb flicking faster than my heartbeat.Sienna leaned so close I thought she’d crawl out of the screen. “If she has an unflattering picture of me, delete it. I need to maintain my mysterious aura.”“No one is thinking ab
