LOGINChapter 4
Charlotte's POV: My online girlfriend
She didn’t see me or maybe she did and didn’t recognize me because why would she?
I could breathe normally again or sort of. I always thought transfer students were supposed to look confused or maybe holding a map upside down.
But the girl walking through the hallway right now? Yeah, no. She looked like she walked out of a dramatic anime intro with theme music blasting behind her.
She had dark messy wolf cut hair and people actually slowed down to stare. Someone bumped into a locker because they weren’t looking and a group of girls whispered, “Who is she??” like she was a celebrity.
Max saw her and immediately stopped laughing mid sentence, his whole face rearranged itself like someone punched him. His smile dropped and his grip on his backpack strap tightened.
Charles leaned in, whispered something to him, and Max shoved him lightly, but his eyes didn’t move from her.
Before I could even process any of that, Maya came sprinting toward me.
“Charlotte!” She grabbed my arm dramatically. “Have you seen the new girl? Why is she that hot? Why is my school allergic to transferring ugly girls?”
“Maya…”
“Oh my gosh, you think she’s cute too, don’t you? Wait Piper from the LGBTQ group just texted me.” She shoved her phone in my eyeballs. “They said she looks like she escaped a biker gang, I’m scared but also emotionally attached already.”
Someone behind her said, “She looks like she beats people up for fun,” and Maya gasped and said that is so romantic.
Classic Maya, she always lived loudly inside her own rainbow universe.
“Maya, please breathe,” I whispered.
“I can’t breathe,” she whispered back. “Can you see her? She looks like a cartoon character.”
I rubbed my forehead, ready to tell her to calm down, when Max suddenly stood way too close to me, too close for normal Max behavior.
His hands slipped to my waist like he was trying to claim me or protect me, honestly I had no idea.
He never touched me like that in public.
“Don’t stare too much,” he muttered.
Excuse me??
Why is he acting weird?
I turned to look at him, but he avoided my eyes while Charles crossed his arms behind him, nodding like he was watching a live episode of drama.
“Interesting!” Charles whispered.
What is interesting??
Someone explain something to me.
Whispers started popping up around the hallway like popcorn.
“Is she a model?”
“Bro she looks dangerous.”
“No way she’s our age.”
“I bet she has tattoos.”
Someone even said, “I heard she got expelled from two schools,” which was physically impossible because she arrived literally ten minutes ago but this school loves drama more than oxygen.
A group of year eights ran past screaming,
“The new girl is so cool, I'm scared of her ”
Great, perfect, lovely, exactly what my heart needed while I was internally combusting.
Before I could interrogate anyone, my phone buzzed.
“Lottie guess who’s at Bridgehall Academy.”
My whole soul collapsed, Sophie was texting me while I stood ten steps away from her.
I looked up again, and Sophie wasn’t staring at me, she was staring at Max.
My stomach dropped straight to my ankles.
Why him? Why that look?
My brain ran through every single possible nightmare scenario in two seconds:
Do they know each other? Did she recognize him before me? Does Max know her? Does Sophie know that I know him? Does anyone know anything about anything??
I felt like a character in a movie who suddenly realizes she is not the main character in the movie anymore.
Max stiffened like someone punched him with air, but before I could even ask what was wrong, he suddenly leaned in and kissed me.
It wasn’t romantic, It wasn’t sweet and it felt like a shield, a cover to hide behind.
People gasped and someone yelled, “Damn”
I think I heard a phone camera shutter.
Max pulled back, but didn’t look at me even for a second. His eyes snapped straight back to Sophie and Sophie didn’t look away.
My heart was beating like it was trying to run out of my body, everything felt so unreal and I was panicking
So I did the only thing my brain could think of: stick to Max’s side like glue. If I acted normal, maybe nobody would see the emotional fire burning inside me.
“Charlotte? Are you okay?” Maya asked, her eyebrow raised like she already knew I was lying.
“I’m fine,” I said too fast, “I’m perfect.”
She stared at me,“Why are you holding Max’s sleeve like that?”
I looked down and I was, I dropped it immediately and laughed, a laugh that sounded like a dying cow.
“I’m just tired.”
Her jaw tightened in that tiny way she does, when she’s pretending to be unbothered.
Her arms crossed, then uncrossed, then crossed again.
She bit her lip, glanced at Sophie, then at me like she was trying to solve an equation she didn’t like.
Maya wasn’t dramatic anymore, she was quiet,
too quiet and that scared me more than anything.
Then Sophie stepped closer, Her boots echoed on the floor in that slow, dramatic way villains walk in movies, Max looked tense beside me and Maya’s entire vibe shifted fully from rainbow to storm cloud.
“I’ll see you later,” Maya said, oddly quiet and walked past us without looking back.
My chest hurt a little at how cold that sounded, but I didn’t have time to think about it because a soft voice spoke behind me.
“Hey, excuse me.”
My whole heart slammed into my ribs.
I turned around and her eyes met mine. There was something about the way she looked at me, like she recognized me but didn’t want to say it out loud.
Her eyebrows lifted just a little, and her eyes did this tiny shine thing that made my
brain go blank.
It felt like she was reading me before even speaking.
Then she said, slowly:
“Do I know you?”
CHAPTER 107: I FORGIVE YOU CHARLOTTE’S POV “Talk about what?” I replied quickly. And by “quickly,” I mean I typed so fast my thumb almost dislocated.Austin didn’t reply. I stared at the message for a full minute before tossing my phone across the room again because apparently that’s my new coping mechanism.I barely slept.Between Maya snoring like a baby goat and my brain replaying every embarrassing second of last night, my soul left my body at least twice. So the next morning at school, I was a walking zombie with lip gloss. The moment I stepped onto the hallway, someone called my name.“Charlotte— wait!”Oh great! My day was already ruined.Austin jogged up to me, looking like a stressed puppy.Hair messy, eyes tired. He stopped in front of me, hands on his knees, breathing dramatically.“I… was… calling… you.”“That sounds like a you problem,” I said sweetly, continuing down the hall.He walked beside me, still panting.“You blocked me.”“I did not block you,” I scoffed.Which
CHAPTER 106 : I'M OVER HIM CHARLOTTE’S POV I walked to my window and pulled the curtains open, pretending to admire the view like some deep, wise philosopher who had finally figured out life.Newsflash: I had not.Behind me, Maya was sprawled on my bed, watching a chaotic episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians on her phone, eating plantain chips like she owned the place.“We’ve already talked about this,” I announced loudly, mostly for myself. “I’ve cleared things with Austin. I don’t like him. He doesn’t like me. We don’t like each other. In fact—” I flipped my hair dramatically. “I never liked him at all.”Maya didn’t even look up.Just paused her video and said, “Uh-huh. Sure. Totally believable.”I glared at her and she smirked.I turned back to the window because arguing with Maya was a waste of oxygen.Nope. Not thinking about him.Not thinking about last night. Not thinking about how stupid I felt or how he said ‘I didn’t know you still liked me’ like I was a relic from t
CHAPTER 105 : WHY ALWAYS ME CHARLOTTE’S POV So that’s what this was all about. The performance, the Nail conversation, everything ohhhhh my goshhh I feel so so stupid.I stepped back slightly from the crowd, my grip tightening around the cup in my hand. The music was still playing, the audience still cheering, but it all sounded far away now, like I was underwater watching everyone else live normally without me.Austin was still on stage, smiling like everything was perfect and Nia was beside him like she belonged there.Of course she was.Of course I wasn’t part of whatever moment this was supposed to be.My chest felt tight, heavier with every second I stayed.I should’ve known better.I really should’ve.“Charlotte?” Maya’s voice cut through my thoughts.I didn’t look at her.She stepped closer anyway, immediately picking up on my mood. “Okay… what happened?”“Nothing,” I said quickly.Maya narrowed her eyes. “That’s a lie.”“I said I don’t want to talk about it.”That shut her
CHAPTER 104 : CRUSH GONE WRONG CHARLOTTE’S POV My stomach dropped. Oh no. God please Maya slowly reached for her phone like she was about to open a horror movie.“Charlotte…” she whispered.“I don’t want to look,” I said.“You have to.”I swallowed and unlocked my phone. And there it was.@BridgehallGossip.New post. My fingers felt cold as I tapped it open.“BREAKING: “CHARLOTTE SEEN GETTING COZY WITH MYSTERY GUY IN CLASS??”“LOVE TRIANGLE OR REBOUND SITUATION??”There was even a blurry picture of me wearing his hoodie.I locked my phone slowly.“Wow,” Maya whispered. “They work fast.”I didn’t say anything because suddenly this wasn’t just a cute rom com movie. It was a situation and it was already getting out of control and the worst part?I didn’t hate it, that was the problem. I should’ve hated it but I didn’t.I just sat there, staring at my desk like it might give me instructions on how to survive my own life.Austin didn’t look at me again for the rest of class. He knew so
CHAPTER 103 : MY CRUSH CHARLOTTE’S POV Why would he even ask if I had a boyfriend?like hello? Why would you need that information unlessMy brain short circuited and my knees almost bent.I almost did a backflip but remembered gravity and embarrassment exist.I looked up and realized he was staring at me, waiting for an answer.Oh no.He definitely saw the entire mental Olympics I just performed.“Umm… it’s complicated,” I blurted. His eyebrows shot up in this tiny, hilarious way. I couldn’t tell if he was confused, terrified, or trying not to laugh. Why am I like this?gosh “I mean.it’s complicated but no. No, I don’t have a boyfriend.” An awkward little laugh leaked out of me like someone squeezed my lungs.Austin’s shoulders relaxed, just a little. Was he relieved? Why would he be relieved??I refused to think about that.He nodded slowly. “Oh. Good to know.”Good to know???Good to know???What does that even mean? You don’t ask a girl that and say good to know unless you’re plan
CHAPTER 102 : MY LONG LOST LOVE CHARLOTTE’S POV I woke up the next morning with that same heavy feeling in my chest. You know the one, the disappointing hangover. Not the dramatic heartbreak type, just the slightly pathetic ugh-I-tried-and-the-universe-laughed-in-my-face kind.I don't like Austin? Gross what no Maya showed up at my front door before school, bouncing like she had eaten electricity for breakfast.“So?” she demanded, not even letting me put on my backpack properly. “How did it go with Austin? Did you flirt? Did he flirt? Did someone faint? Preferably him?”I shut the door behind us. “ Why didn't you ask me yesterday? And you choose now to ask me. Anyways, it was bad.”“Bad as in he murdered your pet squirrel or bad as in you panicked and said something stupid?”“No squirrels were harmed,” I muttered. “It was just bad. Period.”Maya stopped in the middle of the sidewalk. “Charlotte. What happened?”I shrugged, trying to sound casual, even though the memory stung.“I
CHAPTER 67: WELL HELLO ETHAN'S POV Just something to get my mind off the pressure, I assured myself. Just for one minute and I'll remove it I promise. The screen filled with thumbnails, each one a promise to drown out the screaming inside me. I scrolled and then I clicked. I didn’t care what I
CHAPTER 66: DREAM STAKE ETHAN'S POV TWO YEARS AGO I slid the last page of the calculus workbook back into place, the numbers still dancing behind my eyelids. Most people I assume left the library with headaches; but I left with so much relief, honestly maths was my favourite thing.Silence wrapp
CHAPTER 65: TA DAMAYA'S POV Such an asshole, seriously.Who sends a voice note and then deletes it before I can even blink? Jayden had the audacity to act confused earlier, then he drops something into my notifications and snatches it back like a thief in the night? Fantastic, beautiful, amazing.
CHAPTER 64: DATE NIGHT MAYA'S POV Charlotte had barely processed the text on my screen before she gasped so loudly the windows vibrated.“Maya,” she whispered like she’d just discovered gold under my floorboards, “who the heck are you texting?!”Before I could react, she snatched my phone straigh
