The day following the discovery of the insignia seemed endless.

Since dawn, Ambervalley had been struggling to recover from the attack. Injured warriors were receiving treatment, the damage to the buildings was being assessed, and security along the borders had been reinforced. Logan had spent much of the day overseeing the investigation, while Demetri remained occupied with the decisions that needed to be made to protect the pack.

I had barely seen him during those hours.

“Then tell me, Demetri. I want to understand.”Alia’s words gave me something I hadn’t realized I was waiting for: the chance to explain myself without having to defend every choice I had made.Even so, it wasn’t easy.I had spent so long hiding my recovery that revealing the truth felt almost as dangerous as the battle that had left me in this condition.“When I was poisoned, my enemies believed they had finally found a way to get rid of me,” I began. “The silver was supposed to weaken my body, prevent me from fighting, and eventually end my life. But my Alpha blood resisted. Not as well as I had hoped, and certainly not enough to restore everything I had lost, but enough for me to realize I still had a chance.”Alia listened without interrupting.“At first, I could barely stand. The pain was intense, and I had no idea whether I would ever regain my strength. But when I realized I could move again, I understood that revealing it would be a mistake.”“Because of your enemies?”I nodde

I can walk.Demetri’s words kept echoing in my mind, but for a few seconds, I couldn’t find a response. He could walk. The man I had watched sitting in that chair since our arrival in Ambervalley, the man whose condition had stirred my curiosity and even my own insecurities, had just revealed that he wasn’t as helpless as everyone believed. My first instinct was to pull away. Not because I was afraid of him, but because the revelation forced me to reconsider everything I thought I knew. How many times had I watched him, wondering what his life had been like before the poisoning? How many times had I wondered whether he suffered because he depended on others to do things he had once done on his own?And now I was discovering that he could stand, walk, and even fight.I didn’t know what to think. For a brief moment, that familiar bitterness returned. The feeling that men always had something to hide, that the truth was never given to me in full. Richard had taught me, in the cruelest wa

The smile disappeared from my face before I could stop it.How had she noticed? Was she really that perceptive?I imagined a thousand different possibilities of betrayal. But that woman, only seconds earlier, had opened herself up to me with a vulnerability she rarely showed. She had trusted me.Alia was still watching me, her brow slightly furrowed, her eyes attentive. There was no accusation in her expression, only curiosity. Perhaps even concern. But that simple question had the power to destroy years of caution. How were you able to get me onto the bed so easily?I could make up an answer. Say that the position had made the movement easier, that adrenaline was still coursing through my body, or simply make a joke to divert her attention. That was what I always did.Ever since the battle in which I had been poisoned, I had learned to turn every question into an opportunity to conceal another piece of the truth. Before the council, my warriors, and even my allies, lies were a weapon

He smiled against my lips, and our next kiss was longer, more intense. He pulled me onto his lap, wrapping his hands around my waist while I ran my fingers through his hair. When his fingers brushed my skin, a soft gasp escaped me. My heart seemed incapable of keeping a steady rhythm.Demetri noticed my reaction and lifted his eyes to mine. There was desire in his gaze, but also a silent question.I didn't need words to answer. I leaned closer and kissed him again. His lips traveled along my neck and reached my collarbone, awakening sensations entirely new to me. When he looked at me again, I felt my cheeks grow warm, but I didn't look away.I was terribly embarrassed in front of this man, who could now see almost my entire naked body. Would he be disgusted by me and my scars? Would he still desire me if he saw who I was beneath that dress? As if he could read my most frightening thoughts, he called my name.“Alia,” he murmured, caressing my face. “You have no idea how much I've wante

I should have gone to sleep after returning to my room.Instead, I spent most of the night reliving Demetri's kiss: the way he had touched my face, how carefully he had given me time to pull away, and the warmth of his hand on my waist. A desire that burned deep inside me.Was that normal? To desire a man I barely knew?It was irritating to discover that a single kiss could take up so much space in my thoughts. The next morning, I avoided Gemma when she noticed my involuntary smile. I wasn't ready to explain why remembering Demetri's lips made butterflies flutter in my stomach and my knees weaken without warning. The day passed slowly. I was no longer confined to the Alpha's room, but my thoughts kept returning to the previous night and the desire I had kept to myself. When I heard a knock at the door, it was already dark.“Come in.”Demetri appeared in his wheelchair, wearing a black shirt with the first few buttons undone. His hair was slightly tousled, and there was something diffe

I woke up thinking about him.About the kiss from the previous night. About the way Demetri had looked at me, as though I were more than a piece in a political agreement. And, most of all, about his promise that he would never use my trust against me.I wanted to believe him. That was the frightening part.A knock at the door interrupted my thoughts.“May I come in?” Gemma asked. She appeared carrying two boxes and wearing a satisfied smile.“They finally arrived!”The clothes I had been waiting for were inside. Dresses, skirts, blouses, and even a few simpler pieces for everyday wear. I touched the fabrics carefully, almost unable to believe they were all meant for me.In Bleakwood, I had rarely been allowed to choose anything for myself. Even my clothes seemed designed to remind me of my place. Here, for the first time, I could decide.I chose a green dress made of light fabric that gently followed my waist. When I looked at myself in the mirror, it took me a few seconds to recogniz
