Ver másMy father never wanted kids. He couldn't stop my mother from having me, but once I was here, he was wrapped around my little finger. I was his little girl, his princess. My mother was missed dearly since she had died giving birth to me, still, I was loved, and no one blamed me for her death. The entire pack treated me like their own pup, and their kids treated me like a sister. We were a tight knit community. I was always happy. Our pack was happy. Happy until the first full moon after my seventh birthday. Happy until I was stolen.
Temperatures dropped.William had moved the entire contents of the woodshed into the house and given up on opening the front door. Gave up on hunting fresh meat. His girls needed him. Needed the reassurance of their father that everything would be okay.He told them as such with as much of a smile as he could muster and prayed that they believed him. He prayed he believed it but part of him wasn't so sure. Half of his heart was missing. How could anything be okay after that? But he made the effort.William told his daughters stories that he made up on the spot, sometimes he left the nest of homemade quilts to act out scenes for them. He would prance around the pocket sized living room in wolf form with them clinging to his back giggling. He kept waiting to hear Melissa scold him, but the words never came. He even tried singing them to sleep on occasion but he didn't remember any words so he just hummed a broken melody. When weeks turned to months and the grip of winter still held them
“It's okay.” Skye was saying softly. “Let it out. No one will think less of you.”Hesitantly, I got up and crossed the small cave to curl around the two males.“I'm so sorry, William.” I said quietly, my thoughts the nearest whisper against his agonized mind. “I feel like such a hypocrite asking you to relive a painful memory to a stranger when I wouldn't do the same.” I rested my head against the griefstricken Lykaon, and for just a moment, I saw through his eyes. But not his eyes now, closed tight to the world, no, I saw through his eyes one hundred and eighty years ago.I watched helplessly and Melissa strained to bring a third pup into the world while unreasonably cold winds howled outside. The baby was overdue, and the weather had already begun to turn towards winter.Melissa's cries echoed around the small house as she gripped her daughters’ hands by the fire. She had been in labor for many hours now, and she was exhausted. This baby, their son, was much larger than his twin eld
Sign language? I had never heard of sign language.“What is it?” I asked.“It's talking with your hands. People who are deaf or hard of hearing use it but sometimes people who can't talk due to medical issues or if they've gone nonverbal will too.” As Skye explained, he moved his hands around making different gestures and figures and I realized that this must be what he meant.“How do you know it?”“My baby sister. She…” He paused for a moment and sighed sadly. “She had an accident several years ago. She was out riding her bike and a drunk driver hit her. Messed her up pretty bad and fractured her skull. When she woke up in the hospital she couldn't hear. I learned it for her.”Slowly William raised one hand, palm facing us then swiped it out the side.“Her.” Skye said. Then William brought his index and middle fingers together on both hands in an X and tapped them together twice, tipping his head to the side.“Name.” Skye translated. “You want to know her name?”William nodded eagerl
Finally, we stumbled into the rocks, and what I had thought was just a small hollow turned out to be more. Much more.“Wait here.” I told Skye. “I'll check if it's safe.” Leaving the bone weary Healer at the entrance, I carefully made my way down. It wasn't exactly a cave, nor a proper tunnel, but the gaps between the boulders were large enough to pass through, and the whole structure seemed quite solid. And warm!At first, I thought that it was just being out of the wind, but the air itself was actually fairly warm compared to up on the surface.I continued down, winding my way between boulders until I found a decent sized cavern. There was no sign or scent of another creature anywhere in this rock fortress, so I deemed it to be safe.“Skye.” I called. “It's safe. You can come down.”While waiting for Skye to join me, I flopped down against one wall and focused on sending strength to my friend. I didn't have the energy to climb up and back down, but I could help him make his way to m
