Lily’s POV

Three days later, I stood in the biggest bedroom I had ever seen, and a stranger was cutting my hair.

“Shorter on the sides,” Mrs. Sinclair told the stylist. “Vanessa never lets it touch her shoulders.”

I watched my long brown hair fall to the floor and tried not to cry over something so small. Noah’s surgery was set for Friday. The hospital had called that morning to say every bill had been paid in full. That was what mattered. Hair grew back.

The door opened, and a girl in a white tennis skirt walked in, eating an apple. She stopped when she saw me in the mirror.

It was like looking at myself in a dream. Same face, same eyes, same dimple. But she held her chin high, like the whole world belonged to her.

“So this is the copy,” Vanessa said.

“Vanessa,” her mother warned.

“What? I’m just looking.” She walked around my chair slowly, studying me the way people look at a used car. “Her skin is rough. Her nails are a disaster. And she sits like a waitress.”

“I am a waitress,” I said.

She laughed. “Not anymore, sweetheart. Now you’re me. Try not to embarrass me too badly.”

I turned in the chair to face her. “You know, you could just marry him yourself.”

Her smile disappeared. “And spend my best years feeding soup to a man who can’t even open his eyes? No thanks. Ethan was handsome and rich, and that was the only reason I said yes to him in the first place. Now he’s no use to anyone.” She tossed the apple core into a silver bowl. “You’re poor. You’re used to cleaning up messes. This job suits you.”

She walked out before I could answer.

For the next four days, the Sinclairs turned me into their daughter. A woman taught me how to walk in heels, how to hold a wine glass, and how to smile without showing my teeth. Mr. Sinclair, a quiet man with tired eyes, made me memorize the names of everyone in the Blackwood family. I learned Vanessa’s birthday, her favorite perfume, and the name of the horse she rode as a child.

“His grandmother is the one you must please,” Mrs. Sinclair said on the last night. “Eleanor Blackwood. She runs that family, and she notices everything. If she ever suspects you, we are all finished.”

“And Ethan?” I asked. “What was he like?”

Mr. Sinclair answered before his wife could. “Cold,” he said. “Smart. Very hard to fool.”

“Well, he’s in a coma,” Mrs. Sinclair said sharply. “So it doesn’t matter.”

On Friday morning, Noah went into surgery. I sat by the hospital window for six hours with my phone in my hand, wearing Vanessa’s clothes and Vanessa’s perfume. When the surgeon came out smiling, I cried so hard a nurse brought me a box of tissues.

Noah woke up that evening, sleepy and pale, and squeezed my hand.

“Where did the money come from, Lily?” he asked.

“I got a new job,” I told him. “A really good one. It means I’ll be living somewhere else for a while, but I’ll visit you every day I can.”

He frowned at my short hair. “You look weird.”

“Thanks,” I said, laughing through my tears. “I missed you too.”

The wedding was the next afternoon.

It wasn’t in a church. It was in Ethan Blackwood’s bedroom at the Blackwood estate, a huge stone house with gates taller than my old apartment building. There were no flowers and no music. There was only a judge, a few family members in dark clothes, and a man lying very still in a hospital bed by the window.

I couldn’t stop looking at him.

Ethan Blackwood was more handsome than his photos. He had dark hair and a strong jaw, and even asleep, his face looked serious, like he was frowning at something in his dreams. A thin scar ran along his forehead from the accident. Machines beeped softly around him.

An old woman with silver hair and a black cane stood at the foot of the bed. She had sharp gray eyes, and they were fixed on me.

“Vanessa,” she said. “You came.”

“Of course, Grandmother Eleanor,” I said, the way I had practiced. “I would never leave him.”

She looked at me for a long time. My heart pounded so loud I was sure she could hear it.

“Last month, you told me you hated hospitals,” she said.

My mouth went dry. Behind me, Mrs. Sinclair went very still.

“I still do,” I said, and my voice only shook a little. “But I love him more than I hate hospitals.”

Eleanor’s eyes narrowed. Then she nodded once and turned to the judge. “Begin.”

The judge read the vows. Mrs. Sinclair signed as a witness. When it was time for Ethan’s part, Eleanor took his limp hand and pressed his thumb to the paper herself. I signed my name, but it wasn’t my name. I wrote Vanessa Sinclair in neat letters, just like I had practiced a hundred times.

Just like that, I was married.

Afterward, everyone left. Mrs. Sinclair kissed my cheek for show and whispered, “Don’t ruin this,” against my ear. Then the door closed, and I was alone with my husband.

I sat in the chair beside his bed. The room was so quiet I could hear the clock ticking.

“Hi,” I said softly, feeling silly. “I’m your wife. Well, sort of. I’m not who you think I am, but you can’t hear me anyway, so I guess that’s okay.”

I reached over and fixed his blanket, which had slipped off his shoulder. My fingers brushed his hand.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered. “I’m not a bad person. I just needed to save my brother. I promise I’ll take good care of you while I’m here.”

I started to pull my hand back.

His fingers moved.

I froze. I stared at his hand, sure I had imagined it. Then slowly, his fingers curled around mine and held on.

I looked up at his face.

Ethan Blackwood’s eyes were open, and he was looking straight at me.

Lily's POVWe didn't sleep that night.By the time the fire trucks left the lake house, it was almost four in the morning. A doctor cleaned the glass out of my hands in the back of an ambulance and wrapped them in white bandages. Ethan sat beside me the whole time with Duke at his feet, and he didn't let go of my arm once. The police asked me what happened. I told them the truth. A woman invited me there, locked me inside, and turned on the gas. When they asked me her name, I looked at Ethan."Not yet," he said quietly. "When we tell them, it has to stick."So I said I didn't know her, and I hated how easy the lie came out.Back at the house, Eleanor was waiting in the front hall in her robe, with her cane in both hands. She didn't say a word when she saw my bandages. She just put her thin arms around me and held me for a long time. It was the first time she had ever hugged me. She smelled like lavender and old books, and for a moment I felt like someone's granddaughter."Richard came

  • The Stand-In Bride For The Billionaire    Fire on the Water

Lily's POVFor one second, I couldn't move. The smell was everywhere now, filling my nose and the back of my throat. I knew enough from the diner kitchen to know what happened when gas found a flame. One spark, and the whole house would go up with me inside it.I ran into the kitchen and pulled my sweater up over my mouth. My eyes were burning. I grabbed the knobs on the stove and turned them off one by one, four, five, six, until the hissing stopped. But the room was already full, and the gas was moving toward the living room, toward the fire, with nothing to stop it.Water. I needed water. There was a big glass vase on the kitchen table, full of the same white flowers Margaret loved. I threw the flowers on the floor, grabbed the vase with both hands, and ran back to the living room. The fire was snapping and jumping in the stone fireplace. I threw the water as hard as I could. The flames hissed and shrank, but they didn't die. Half the logs were still glowing red.My head was starti

  • The Stand-In Bride For The Billionaire    The Lake House

Lily's POVI waited until the house was asleep.Ethan had fallen asleep a little after eleven, with one arm thrown over his eyes and Duke stretched across the foot of the bed. I lay on my sofa in the dark and listened to him breathe. Every few minutes, I touched the card in my pocket to make sure it was still there.Come alone. If you bring the Blackwoods, the truth dies with me.I knew it was a trap. I wasn't stupid. But all my life, I had believed I knew who I was. I was Lily Carter, the daughter of a woman who worked two jobs and sang in our tiny kitchen. Now I didn't know anything anymore. And the only person who had the answer was the woman who had tried to kill my husband. At half past eleven, I got up. I put on my old jeans and the gray sweater I had brought from home, the only clothes in that house that were really mine. I picked up my shoes and carried them in my hand.At the door, I stopped and looked back at Ethan.I almost woke him. I almost told him everything. But I thou

  • The Stand-In Bride For The Billionaire    Flowers for Noah

Lily's POVMarcus drove faster than I had ever seen anyone drive.I sat in the back with my phone pressed to my ear, calling Noah's room again and again. Nobody answered. Every red light felt like an hour. Every car in front of us felt like it was trying to kill me.Ethan sat beside me. He wasn't supposed to be there. Eleanor had told him that if anyone saw him walking into a hospital on his own two feet, the whole plan would fall apart. Ethan had looked at her and said, "Then nobody will see," and put on a baseball cap and a pair of dark glasses and got in the car anyway."He's fine," Ethan kept saying. "Carla said he's fine. Breathe, Lily.""She sat with him," I said. "She sat with my brother and asked about his medicine. The same woman who put poison in your glass last night."He didn't answer that, because there was nothing to say. He just held my hand so tight it almost hurt, and I held his back.I thought about the night Noah's heart stopped, the alarms and the nurses running pa

  • The Stand-In Bride For The Billionaire   Margaret Says Hello

Lily's POVI don't remember walking back down the east hall. One moment I was sitting in Eleanor's study, and the next I was standing outside Ethan's door with the photo of Rose still in my hand.Eleanor had told me to keep it. "Show him," she said. "He should hear it from you."When I opened the door, Ethan was standing by the window. He was dressed, with his hair still wet from the shower, and Duke was sitting at his feet. He turned around fast when he heard me."What did she say?" he asked. Then he saw my face, and his voice changed. "Lily. What happened?""She knows," I said. "She's known since the wedding. I told her everything."He crossed the room in four steps. He was still slow, but he didn't use the cane. He took my face in both hands and looked at me like he was checking for wounds."Did she threaten you?" he asked. "Did she say she would call the police?""No," I said. "She's on our side."He let out a breath. "My grandmother is never on anyone's side.""She is now," I sai

  • The Stand-In Bride For The Billionaire   The Truth in the Study

Lily's POVI stared at the photo until my eyes burned. The young woman in the garden was smiling at whoever held the camera. She looked happy and a little shy, the way I looked in the only good picture my mother ever took of me. I touched the small mark below my own ear without meaning to."How long have you known?" I whispered.Eleanor leaned back in her chair. "Since the day you married my grandson."I looked up at her, and she almost smiled."Do you remember what I said to you at the wedding?" she asked. "I told you that you hated hospitals. Vanessa did hate them. She visited Ethan twice after his accident, and both times she left in under ten minutes. But you sat by his bed and held his hand like you'd been doing it your whole life. And when I said it, you didn't even know what I was talking about. I saw it in your face.""You never said anything," I said."I wanted to see what you would do," she said. "So I watched. Duke growled at Vanessa every time she came to this house, and o
