The shadow of a person who was clearly a man with his outline and his voice as well gave that away. He approached slowly to not frighten the young girl. She looked like she had gone through hell during her stay at the private hospital. He knew his size was often the one factor that made people afraid of him.

“Are you waiting for someone?” he asked as he looked over at her in the wheelchair. He then saw the baby that was in her arms. He was now even more concerned because the weather was changing quickly. Though the storm had passed, the air had a chill to it.

“No,” she said as the tears began to fall from her eyes. Jade had realized there was no one to help her. She was alone and in pain. She had nothing for herself or the baby. She was utterly alone.

“Now, please stop crying. I said I will help you try and fix this.” He stated as he moved to her side. He looked down into her face and saw nothing there but pain.

“Crying will only make it hurt more.” He said softly as he wiped the tears away with his hand. He had bent down and crouched as he looked into her face. She was trying to stop the tears, and she was trying to breathe a little deeper, “Now that is a good girl. My name is Benton Hayes. I am a doctor here at the hospital. Now tell me why you are outside alone.”

Jade looked at him and didn’t know if she should trust him or not. However, there was no one else there to help her. She had to take a huge leap of faith for that. She didn’t know really what to say, though. “I went into labor, and I was brought here by the paramedics. I had to have emergency surgery. When I woke up, my stepmother told me my father wasn't my father. That they had written me off. Then the next thing I know, they are wheeling me out here. My stepmother canceled my health insurance. I can’t pay the bill myself.” Jade said as she was fighting with herself not to start to cry again. She didn’t want to hurt anymore.

The hurt and disbelief were written on her face. Benton looked at her and could read between the lines on the relationship between the stepmother and this girl. He had a few questions. Though he wasn’t sure how to handle this. He couldn’t in good faith leave this young girl to fend for herself out here in the elements. That much was clear to him as he pondered what to do.

“Alright. I understand what happened. Now I have to wonder what to do with you.” He said as he looked at her. This girl just had surgery and shouldn’t be outside, let alone on her own with a newborn. There was one thing he could do. “I didn’t catch your name?”

“Jade. Jade Winchester.” She said softly as she looked at the baby in her arms. She was trying to focus on the baby. He was innocent in all of this. She didn’t know how she would get by, but she knew she had to. She would do anything for him. She had to. She was all he had as well.

“Okay, Jade.” He said with a slight smile. “I am going to have to wheel you to the back. I need to you to trust me, though.”

“Where do you want to take me?” she asked, alerted to the fact this stranger wanted to move her somewhere. She could only think he wanted to sell her and her baby.

“To where I work.” He said as he stood. “For now, I will have you there, and then I will get the supplies that you will need. They shouldn’t have tossed you on the street. You can’t be left alone. This weather will suck the heat out of you and the baby. It would be the best thing for the both of you to get out of this cold.”

Jade thought about it for a moment. She had nowhere else to be. She looked at the stranger named Benton again and knew she had no other choice. She had to go with him for now. She had to learn to trust this man for a little while though it might not be the best option.

As he pushed the wheelchair, Benton had no idea what he was going to do really. He did know that he had to get her and the baby out of the elements for the time being. Though he was taking her back into the hospital, it wasn't the best place for her to be either. He still had a few hours on shift.

He walked fast enough that he could get around the building but not fast enough to make her sick. He opened the door with his ID and then held it open to push her into the dark hallway. There was a slight moldy smell in the air. Though he pushed her into the empty room, that was there. “I am going to have to leave you here for a little bit. Don’t worry or panic. I am going to finish up for the night and then go and get supplies for a little while for you. We are going to have to redress your incisions and take care of the area. Also, with the baby, we will have to do the check-ups and everything.”

“What is this place?” she asked as she looked up to gaze into his face, which surprised her. He was gorgeous. That shocked her more than the fact he was trying to help her out.

“This is the basement of the hospital.” He replied.

“You said you were a doctor,” Jade replied as she looked at him again closely. There was something he wasn't telling her. When he sighed deeply and then nodded to her.

“I am. I am the pathologist for the hospital. Welcome to the morgue, Jade.” Benton said as he waved his arm around.
