JOSH POV I watch Maddie as she turns from me and leaves Jenna’s hospital room. I turn my attention back to Jenna and check on her. MADDIE POV I see Josh sitting in a chair in the surgical waiting room. He’s sitting across the room from the rogue who was with Jenna. Josh is glaring at him and the rogue has his head down, staring at the floor, his foot bouncing in agitation. Bruno is between them, pacing the floor, anxious about the status of his mate. I’m sure he’s tried to link in and bug Dr. Langford multiple times already. Josh sees me and stands up, making his way over to me. I check him over and sniff his scent while he’s walking. MADDIE POV Fucking rogues! Attacking again! This time though, I know they aren’t here for me and my pack. They are going after some of my allies who aren’t as strong as us. Mitch and Fergie’s short people’s camp is one of those less strong allies. They choose to live in the forests, usually near rivers since most of their members are beaver and otter shifters. There are others shifter species as part of their group too, like fox and badger shifters. Even though they are all different species, they like to live together for safety reasons. They do, on occasion, hire themselves out to human circuses to make money. And they travel around the world, visiting other shifter packs and camps for trade. JOSH POV As one, we both turn back to Jenna and Rocco. “Is everyone calm now? Can we all discuss things like adults?” I ask. No one answers and I roll my eyes at their childishness. Why am I the only one who reacts without violence? The professional NFL quarterback, of all the people here, doesn’t resort to fighting to be heard. Seems like the twilight zone again. I walk over and crouch down to check on Bruno. The bleeding has stopped but his nose is crooked on his face. JOSH POV I look around as we drive and see the entire town is empty of families and kids in their human forms. I do see a few shifted wolves in pairs, patrolling the neighborhoods, shopping areas and in the trees. “Is this all because of Jenna?” I ask, feeling guilty that my sister looking for me is the reason the place looks deserted. “Yes,” is all I get out of Maddie. I look over and see her morphing from the affectionate and passionate Maddie I had in the bedroom to the serious, killing machine Alpha Madison. I’m sad to see the warm, free-spirited woman who launched herself into my arms because I claimed her disappear into the cold, expression-free woman I met in the dungeon.
