Stunned silence met my statement.  Finally, Lia broke it.

“But she’s a woman,” she began.

I shook my head.  “Some women don’t have the ability to feel compassion or empathy.  And, for those, unless they’ve personally experienced it, it is too easy to justify.”

Lia looked sick.  Wyatt slowly nodded his head.

“Proximity, she has.  And she would have been able to overhear the conversation with Jarrett’s dad and myself about using you to take down Jones.”  Wyatt slammed his fist down on the table.  “I should have seen it.  She’s had opportunity to overhear almost all of our conversations.” 

I was sympathetic.  “You’re in the midst of all of this.  I’m not.  Sometimes an outsider sees what you can’t when you’re emotionally involved.”

Wyatt smiled at me, but it was Lia who spoke.  “You’re not an outsider anymore, Kacela.  I hope you see that.”
