Tristan’s POV

“What?”

The word escaped my mouth before I could stop it.

I stared at Briar, waiting for her to laugh and tell me she was only trying to scare me.

She didn't.

Instead, she gave a bitter laugh and folded her arms.

“You heard me, Tristan. Genevieve admitted it. She told me everything.”

My stomach twisted.

“No. That's impossible.” I shook my head hard. “Genevieve would never do that.”

“She did.”

Briar stepped closer, her eyes burning with anger.

“She knew our packs would

Briar's pov Genevieve sobbed into Tristan's chest like her whole world had just ended, shoulders shaking, hands fisted in his shirt. Tristan held her stiffly, arms wrapped around her out of instinct more than anything, his face still frozen in shock. I watched them and felt nothing. No jealousy, no old ache, nothing but the quiet satisfaction of watching a lie finally collapse under its own weight. "Elder Adams." I turned to the panel before Tristan could recover enough to speak. "Alpha Tristan told this Council, under oath, that he didn't know where Genevieve was. He then demanded I be punished for lying. We now know exactly who lied, and it wasn't me. I'd like that addressed." Elder Adams studied Tristan for a long moment, something cold settling into his expression. "Agreed. Alpha Tristan, you knowingly misled this Council during a formal hearing. That is a serious offense, regardless of the outcome of the larger case." Tristan lifted his head, Genevieve still clinging to

Briar's Pov Tristan stared at the photos like they might rearrange themselves into something less damning if he looked long enough. "These are fake." His voice cracked on the word. "Doctored. Anyone can fake a photo, Elder Adams, this proves nothing." "Then we'll verify them." Elder Adams didn't even glance up as he slid the photos toward a waiting attendant. "IT will confirm authenticity within the hour. Metadata, timestamps, location data — it's a simple process." Tristan stood so fast his chair nearly toppled. "Fine. I'll wait outside." "Sit down, Alpha Tristan." Elder Adams's tone didn't rise, but it didn't need to. "This hearing is not concluded. You'll remain until we resume." "I have pack business—" "That can wait an hour." Tristan's jaw worked like he wanted to argue further, but one look at the panel told him it wouldn't help. He grabbed Cassian's arm and stormed toward the exit, already pulling his phone out before the doors had fully opened. I watched him go and f

Briar's pov "You don't have to do this," Logan said, eyes on the road, one hand resting over mine. "Yes, I do." "We could let it go. Build our life, focus on the pack, let the Council handle the rest of it from here." "No." I pulled my hand back. "He killed my father, Logan. I'm not walking away from that so we can have a peaceful breakfast schedule." "I'm not asking you to walk away from justice. I'm asking you to let someone else carry it for a while." His voice was careful, gentler than I expected. "You haven't slept right in weeks." "I'll sleep when he's punished." He went quiet at that, knuckles tightening slightly on the wheel. "And if the Council doesn't rule in your favor? If they need more than what you've got?" "Then I'll get more." I looked out the window so he wouldn't see my face. "I have to, Logan. If I stop now, it means he wins. It means my father's death just disappears. I can't let that happen." He reached over again, slower this time, and laced h

Tristan's pov Holding Genevieve should have felt like relief. It did, for about a minute. Then the quiet crept back in, and underneath it, that same hollow space where Briar used to sit. It wasn't filling. If anything, it felt like it was rotting a little more each day. I carried her upstairs and set her down on the bed in one of the guest rooms. "Take a bath," I said. "We'll talk about what comes next after." She looked up at me, eyes still wet, and smiled like I'd handed her the world. "I love you, Alpha Tristan." The words sat in my mouth, ready to go back to her. I opened my lips and then stopped, because it wasn't true. I didn't love her. I never had, not really. I needed her to give me an heir. A pup would settle the pack, silence the whispers, secure what I already had. That was all this was. "Go bathe," I said instead, and walked out. She came back wrapped in a towel, skin still damp, and slid into bed beside me like she belonged there. She let the towel slip. I look

Briar's pov Two days. That was all it took for the cabin to feel like the only real place left in the world. Logan loaded the last bag into the jeep, and I stood on the porch, not ready to let it go yet. "I want to come back here," I said. He turned, shirtless, jeans hanging low, and crossed the porch in three steps. His arms wrapped around me, warm and solid, and I pressed a kiss to his chest. "Most handsome wolf alive," I murmured against his skin. He laughed, low in his throat. "Keep talking like that and we're never leaving." "If I'd known you built this for me, I would've married you sooner." "No, you wouldn't." He tipped my chin up. "You would've called the police and told them your stalker built a cabin in the woods to kidnap you." "I would not have." "You absolutely would have." I shoved his chest, and he caught my wrist, grinning. "Fine. I'll build a time machine. We start over. You fall for me in half the time." "Deal," I said. "But you're still shirtless in thi

Briar POV I stared at Grandfather across the table. "So what are we supposed to do? If Killian knows something, we need him alive and in his right mind when we take this before the High Council." Logan's hand tightened around mine beneath the table. "That's easier said than done," he murmured. "What do you mean?" Grandfather let out a long breath. "The Council dungeons aren't exactly designed for gentle treatment." A chill ran down my spine. "What happens to him?" "Interrogation," Logan said. "And Killian isn't going to confess just because we ask nicely." "But he can testify." "He won't," Grandfather said firmly, "not if he believes the punishment waiting for him is worse than anything we can offer." I shook my head. "Then don't let them break him." Logan's thumb moved slowly over my knuckles. "Briar—" "No." I pulled my hand back slightly. "We need him. If Genevieve is still missing and we don't have enough evidence against Tristan, Killian might be our only chance." Gr
