Mia stared at the divorce papers on the table long after Ethan had left.

His signature was already there.

For two years, she had imagined what it would feel like to finally see those words.

Divorce.

She had expected relief.

Instead, there was an ache in her chest that she couldn't explain.

Maybe because Ethan had finally given her the one thing she had begged him for when she was still foolish enough to believe that begging could make someone love her.

Freedom.

She reached for the papers and touched his signature with trembling fingers.

“He actually signed.”

Ryan, who had been sitting quietly across from her, looked at her.

“Yes.”

Mia swallowed.

“He didn't even fight me this time.”

Ryan leaned back in his chair.

“Maybe he finally understands that he can't force you to stay.”

Mia looked away.

That was what frightened her.

Ethan had always been stubborn. Proud. Powerful. The kind of man who expected the world to bend when he gave an order.

But yesterday, he had simply placed the papers in front of her and walked away.

No threats.

No anger.

No demand.

Just...

Acceptance.

Her phone suddenly vibrated.

Mia glanced at the screen.

Ethan Carter.

Her heart immediately tightened.

She almost ignored it.

Then she remembered the divorce papers.

She answered.

“Hello?”

For several seconds, there was silence.

Then Ethan's deep voice came through.

“I wanted to tell you something.”

Mia's fingers tightened around the phone.

“What?”

“I've instructed my legal team to stop the divorce process from becoming public until you decide how you want it handled.”

She frowned.

“Why?”

“Because I don't want your reputation destroyed because of me.”

Mia's breath caught.

“You already accused me of cheating.”

“I know.”

His voice sounded different.

Not defensive.

Not angry.

Just painfully honest.

“I was wrong.”

Mia closed her eyes.

“You believed her.”

“I did.”

“You looked at me and believed I was capable of betraying you.”

“I did.”

“And you didn't even ask me.”

“I should have.”

Her eyes burned.

She hated how easily his words could still hurt her.

Ethan continued.

“I'm going to correct that.”

“You don't have to.”

“I do.”

Mia opened her eyes.

“What are you planning?”

“You'll see.”

The call ended.

Mia stared at the phone.

“What does he mean by that?” she whispered.

Ryan stood.

“Whatever it is, you don't owe him anything.”

She looked at him.

“I know.”

Ryan gave her a small smile.

“Good.”

He picked up his jacket.

“Come on.”

“Where?”

“You said you wanted to restart your life.”

Mia nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then let's start with something that belongs to you.”

---

Across the city, Ethan stood in front of a conference room filled with senior executives.

Daniel stood beside him.

On the table were several documents, including the photographs that had nearly destroyed his marriage.

Ethan looked at them one final time.

Then he pushed them aside.

“I want a statement prepared.”

One of the executives looked confused.

“About the divorce?”

“No.”

Ethan's jaw tightened.

“About Mia.”

The room became silent.

Ethan looked at every person sitting around the table.

“Mia Bennett did not cheat on me.”

Daniel watched him carefully.

Ethan continued.

“The photographs used against her were misleading. I accused my wife without verifying the evidence. That was my failure.”

One executive hesitated.

“Sir, are you sure you want to make that public? The Carter family's reputation—”

“My reputation isn't more important than hers.”

The executive immediately fell silent.

Ethan stood.

“And make sure every media outlet that received the original story receives the correction.”

Daniel stared at him after the meeting ended.

“You know this will make people talk.”

“I know.”

“They'll say you were humiliated by your wife.”

Ethan looked through the glass wall toward the city.

“She was humiliated because of me.”

He paused.

“I can survive people talking.”

Daniel said nothing.

Ethan's eyes lowered.

“What I can't survive is knowing I ruined her life and did nothing to fix it.”

---

Mia spent the afternoon with Ryan visiting a small office space.

It wasn't luxurious.

The walls needed repainting. The furniture was old. The reception area was almost empty.

But Mia couldn't stop smiling.

“This place is perfect.”

Ryan raised an eyebrow.

“Really?”

“Yes.”

“You're looking at the peeling walls.”

“I see potential.”

He smiled.

“That sounds like you.”

Mia walked toward the large window.

Sunlight poured through the glass.

For the first time in weeks, she felt something other than sadness.

Hope.

Ryan came to stand beside her.

“You could build something here.”

Mia looked at him.

“Something of my own.”

“Exactly.”

She smiled.

“Thank you.”

Ryan's expression softened.

“You don't have to thank me for believing in you.”

Her smile faded slightly.

There was something in his eyes.

Something warm.

Something Ethan had rarely given her.

Certainty.

Before Mia could respond, her phone began ringing.

She looked down.

A news notification appeared.

Her face changed.

BREAKING: BILLIONAIRE ETHAN CARTER ADMITS WIFE WAS WRONGLY ACCUSED OF INFIDELITY.

Mia stared at the headline.

Ryan took one look at her expression.

“What happened?”

She showed him the phone.

Ryan read the article.

Then he looked at her.

“He did this publicly.”

Mia slowly opened the article.

Ethan had taken full responsibility.

He hadn't mentioned Vanessa.

He hadn't blamed anyone else.

He hadn't tried to make himself look innocent.

He had simply admitted that he had accused Mia without enough evidence.

Mia's eyes filled with tears.

“He didn't have to do this.”

Ryan's voice was quiet.

“Maybe he did.”

Mia looked at him.

Ryan sighed.

“You spent two years protecting his reputation while he made you feel like you weren't worth protecting.”

His eyes softened.

“Maybe this is the first time he's protecting yours.”

Mia didn't answer.

Because she knew Ryan was right.

---

That evening, Ethan stood outside Mia's mother's apartment.

He had no flowers.

No expensive gifts.

No security guards.

Just a folder in his hand.

Mia opened the door and froze when she saw him.

“You came.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Ethan held out the folder.

“These are documents proving the cheating accusations against you were false.”

Mia didn't take them.

“You already admitted it publicly.”

“I know.”

“Then what are these for?”

“So you'll never have to defend yourself again.”

Her heart twisted.

Ethan lowered the folder.

“I know an apology isn't enough.”

Mia stared at him.

“No. It isn't.”

“I know.”

“You hurt me.”

“I know.”

“You made me feel worthless.”

“I know.”

“You chose another woman over me.”

His face tightened.

“I know.”

“And now you're standing here acting like regret can fix everything.”

“I don't expect it to.”

Mia's eyes filled with tears.

“Then what do you expect?”

Ethan looked directly into her eyes.

“Nothing.”

She went still.

“I don't expect forgiveness,” he said. “I don't expect you to come back. I don't even expect you to speak to me tomorrow.”

His voice cracked slightly.

“But I'm going to spend every day proving that I'm sorry anyway.”

Mia couldn't breathe.

Ethan placed the folder gently on the small table beside the door.

Then he stepped backward.

“I'll leave you alone.”

He turned.

Mia watched him walk down the hallway.

For the first time since their marriage began, Ethan Carter wasn't demanding that she stay.

He was willing to lose her.

And somehow...

That hurt more than his anger ever had.

Behind Mia, her phone vibrated again.

A message from Ryan appeared.

Ryan: Dinner tomorrow? Just us. No pressure.

Mia stared at the message.

Then she looked down the hallway where Ethan had disappeared.

For the first time, she realized her heart was standing between two men.

One had finally learned how to love her.

The other had loved her quietly all along.

And Mia had no idea which one her heart would choose.
